It does seem to be a go-to dogs' name at the moment. But then so are names like Poppy and Max. Depends how much you love it I suppose.

FluffingMarvellous · 28/07/2022 10:58

How about Lyra instead?

Aorh · 28/07/2022 11:00

It’s a proper exception name for me - totally not the style of my normal taste but I think it’s beautiful.

When we were discussing dog names, we did reach the conclusion that calling it at the park might bring 15 dogs running.

AuntieStella · 28/07/2022 11:06

People call their dogs Luna because they think its a gorgeous name, but don't want to use it for their DDs because of the silent '-tic'

Lots of these dogs are lockdown puppies, btw, so they'll be around in the parks for another decade or more

DuchessOfSausage · 28/07/2022 11:11

There are so many similar names around like Lena, Lana, Lara, Lyra, Lila, Lily, Leah, Lucy etc that they blur into each other.

She might get tired of hearing 'We've got a dog called Luna'

toastofthetown · 28/07/2022 11:29

I’d be more worried about it’s popularity for human babies and it’s sudden spike it popularity. It’s gone from being used a handful of times a year in the mid 90s to #36 in 2020. I’d be concerned with that quick rise the name will date badly. Dog names wouldn’t put me off though.

SalviaOfficinalis · 28/07/2022 11:31

I prefer Lena, which I think is lovely.

I like Luna but it’s very Harry Potter/dog name and I worry it would date badly.

Minikievs · 28/07/2022 11:41

It's my cats name. Sorry.

I agree Lyra is nice

MuffinMcLayLikeABundleOfHay · 28/07/2022 11:43

I would use it if you like it. I wouldn't worry about the dogs! People don't care about Max for example being a dogs name.

bluegardenflowers · 28/07/2022 11:46

Our dog is Luna. Short for lunatic. So maybe not

ForTheLoveOfSleep · 28/07/2022 11:46

People call dogs Luna because a luna is the Alpha female of a wolf pack.

I personally love the name 😃But then again I'm a total Ravenclaw Potter nerd...🪄

sunglassesonthetable · 28/07/2022 11:51

My DS has a name that has since become incredibly popular for dogs. Life goes on. And it still suits. 😁

User56785 · 28/07/2022 11:57

You think other people shouldn't call their own baby the name they like because you have called your dog the same name???

GoAround · 28/07/2022 12:02

I also know 2 cats and a rabbit called Luna…

DuchessOfSausage · 28/07/2022 12:02

@User56785, the emphasis in that post was that Luna was short for lunatic

SalviaOfficinalis · 28/07/2022 12:05

OP is literally asking people for their opinions on whether it’s a suitable name for a baby because she’s worried it’s a dog name. That’s kind of the point of mn… answering the OP with your opinion.

SpringRainbow · 28/07/2022 12:06

I suddenly know a lot of babies with the name Luna.

Thefriendlymoth · 28/07/2022 12:09

I love it but three people I know have a doggy Luna so it’s the association I make. Still, lots of names are “dog” names and they work fine.

RuthW · 28/07/2022 12:20

It's lovely

obsessedwithsleep · 28/07/2022 12:28

I always think it's a dog's name which is a shame as it's pretty.

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 28/07/2022 12:31

It's my nieces name and she suits it. My boss had a dog at the same time and called her the same name but I don't think it matters

Gemma2022 · 28/07/2022 14:45

Thanks
yes i love lyra but its hard to say with our surname

Luna is a lovely name
i know of one baby with this name. No dogs!

SundayTeatime · 28/07/2022 16:39

I think it’s awful. Lunatic, loony, etc. It has the same vibes as Dawn, and that’s dated badly. Might have been ok when it was uncommon, but it’s unusable now.

MerryChristmasToYou · 28/07/2022 16:57

According to Darkgreener, the name Dawn is still in use in England and Wales.
I don't dislike it but it does seem like the name of someone in her 60s.
