Baby girl name can’t decide

RosieK39 · 23/07/2022 10:10

Little miss is due very soon and we still haven’t settled on a name. There are several names on our list that we like but it has been hard to choose.

Names we are considering:

Ava - I don’t know if it’s too common
Piper - I love it and I don’t think I’ve ever heard it where I live.
Lexi - Seems to be quite popular but I haven’t heard of any small ones
Imogen
Bailey

It would also be helpful to know the popularity of these names, as some are more popular than others but popularity isn’t the most important thing to us although we sometimes like to be a little adventurous and go for something different. We live in north London and don’t know many children.

100% Imogen

It's the only one that is an elegant sophisticated name that would be suitable at all ages.

Whiskeypowers · 23/07/2022 10:16

Ava is popular but it is a lovely name
also like Imogen

nor the other three

Denny53 · 23/07/2022 10:17

I’d associate Bailey as being a boys name?

Ragruggers · 23/07/2022 10:18

I don’t like any of those names but that is your choice.Thinkhow she will feel as an adult. So many beautiful names for girls I thought Bailey was a boy’s name.I love Francesca,Valentina,Darcy,Lydia.Good luck choosing.Being totally out there is not always a good plan.

pamshortsbrokenbothherlegs · 23/07/2022 10:21

I love Imogen, it's so beautiful. It's also the only one on your list I personally would choose - Piper and Bailey are a bit American to my ears (and I'm American so I don't mean anything horrible by that), Ava a bit too popular, and Lexi feels like a nn. But Imogen is just perfect.

Spidey66 · 23/07/2022 10:24

Imogen is my favourite from your list. I like Ava as well and Lexi, but would use that as a nickname for Alexandra, which I like.

I don't like Piper and I thought Bailey was a boys name as well, though there's a little girl on EE called Bailey. (In fact there's a girl on EE called Lexi too....I hope you're not using that for inspiration!)

Normandy144 · 23/07/2022 10:26

I like Piper and if you love it I would go for it. It is American but honestly living in North London I think you can get away with it. Ava is reasonably popular although I only know 1 under 10. I think it was ultra popular around 12 -15 years ago. Imogen is a classic but also popular and I know 3 under 10. I'd discount Bailey (I think boy's name?) and Lexi as it feels very nickname to me.

TidyDancer · 23/07/2022 10:28

I like Piper and Ava. Imogen is okay. Lexi as a stand-alone is not great imo but the longer Alexandra is beautiful (and you could use Lexi as a nickname if you wanted to). Bailey is awful on a girl, sorry.

user1492757084 · 23/07/2022 10:28

Imogen, Genavieve or Alexandra I love, with inspiration from your list.

Rainbowqueeen · 23/07/2022 10:29

Ava is hugely popular but none of the others are

Imogen Bailey or Piper Bailey sound lovely

CantaloupeMelon · 23/07/2022 10:31

Imogen in my favourite too! Pretty and not too popular.

17caterpillars1mouse · 23/07/2022 10:31

Ava - I really like it but it's been popular for a long time now, dd6 has 2 in her class, the last baby girl I know born was called Ava. Several people I went to school with have had Ava's, also I know lots of Eva's which is very similar too.

Piper - I like it as I'm of the Charmed era

Lexi - Lexi as a standalone name sounds juvenile but it's nice enough as a NN for Alexandra, Alexis, Alexa etc

Imogen - lovely classic name. I like it

Bailey - makes me think of the alcoholic drink. A bit like calling your child Tia Maria in my view

Ohmydayssilleople · 23/07/2022 10:31

Imogen

PraiseBee · 23/07/2022 10:42

My vote is Imogen. Great name for small child, teen and adult

Fivebeanchilli · 23/07/2022 10:43

Also in North London.
Ava - I think locally it's had its popularity surge. It's still common nationally but I think there will be more 8-15 year old Avas in North London than babies and toddlers
Piper - it's not my style. I'm aware that this is going to sound snobby but you want opinions so .. this is definitely more Tottenham than Crouch End. Depends where you live and the style you like.
Lexi - I've not come across any for years. Again this would be a name that would be considered a bit more down-market. Alexandra though would be lovely.
Imogen - gorgeous, classical. The youngest I know is 8.
Bailey - I know a thousand boys called Bailey (all over 12) and one or two girls but they are older than 10 too - the fad of naming girls with boys' names feels as though it's passed now.
It very much depends on where you are in N London as to the typical names.
So Crouch End / Muswell Hill etc usually are the first places to use names and 20-24 years ago every small child was Felix/Oscar/Freya. Then those became very mainstream and every child became Hugo/Monty/Otis/Ava/Penelope... Then those became mainstream. I don't know what names are super popular there now... Barnet etc tends to be a couple of years behind and much more staid - so would still see Freyas and Oscars along with the Penelopes and Hugos plus a big vogue for Jackson and Harrison for some reason.
Enfield/Tottenham have always tended to go more for the surname type names or the more American sounding names....

SundayTeatime · 23/07/2022 10:47

Ava - I like it.
Piper - it’s OK and is miles better than Harper. A piper is a big man with a beard and a kilt and bagpipes to me, though. But it could grow on me.
Lexi - no. Dislike. Alexandra is nice.
Imogen - irrational dislike of this one. I think spelling mistake. And I know lots of not so nice ones.
Bailey- boy’s name.

Lingoflaming · 23/07/2022 12:29

Ava - very common
Piper - I think of the pied piper story so it's a no from me
Lexi - sounds like a stripper's name but Alex or Alexandra works better
Imogen - 100%
Bailey - a bit common and not in a good way

Lingoflaming · 23/07/2022 12:45

Some alternatives:
Caitlyn
Azalea
Zinnia
Beatrice
Violet
Iona
Arabella
Anna
Delilah
Callista

KirstenBlest · 23/07/2022 14:01

Ava - too common and I dislike it
Piper - awful
Lexi - awful
Imogen - nice
Bailey - friend's dog's name

IStandWithMaya · 23/07/2022 14:28

Imogen is the only one I like

Celia24 · 23/07/2022 14:33

Piper :) mainly because I love Charmed but also because it has a musical sound to it and it's quite original. My neighbour's daughter is called Piper but I've never met another.

20viona · 23/07/2022 14:34

Absolutely adore Piper. 100% not Ava, totally common. Imogen is ok.

km718 · 23/07/2022 17:30

Ava - like v popular
Bailey - would assume boy
Piper - not my cup of tea, but each to their own
Imogen - ok
Lexi - have a little one, have heard of a few others, but not many. We liked Alexa but that’s been ruined by the device. Alexis and Alexia don’t work with our surname. I dislike Alexandra massively, it feels old-fashioned and clunky to me. So she’s just Lexi. I know it’s a marmite name. I know lots of people on here hate it. I couldn’t care less. She suits it, she’s already got a bit of sass about her , and no one’s actually said anything negative to my face 😂.

Mumofgirls2017 · 24/07/2022 22:19

Piper!
