i can’t find this spelling anywear and it’s the name of my friends new son so I would like to know how I should say it ( I could ask her I know !)

I would say it zhu-lay, I think, with like a soft 'j' at the start?

Skelligsfeathers · 20/07/2022 22:24

I would say " what on earth were you thinking?"

EveSix · 20/07/2022 22:26

Erm... if she made it up, your only hope is to ask her. Oh boy.

bitelover · 20/07/2022 22:26

I would assume it's the same as Jools. Unless there's a different culture or language involved? (The apostrophe reminds me a bit of Breton names.)

Footbal · 20/07/2022 22:30

Zhu lay

FirstFallopians · 20/07/2022 22:31

Just ask her!

The sooner she becomes accustomed to people looking puzzled and asking for clarification the better.

lbbean · 20/07/2022 22:40

I’d assume it’s said like Jules/Jools

PinkButtercups · 20/07/2022 22:53

If assume Joules but I wouldn't like to take a guess without asking her tbh.

PinkButtercups · 20/07/2022 22:53

I'd*

daisypond · 20/07/2022 22:56

Is it from a particular culture or country? Not a name I recognise.

PilatesWife · 20/07/2022 23:00

What-the-actual-fuck. Or Joo-leez. Depending on your level of politeness.

mrsfoof · 20/07/2022 23:02

It looks like it should be pronounced as though it was French. So zhu (joo with a soft 'j')-lay.

SpringIntoChaos · 21/07/2022 06:25

I'd just say something like, 'What an interesting name...how are you pronouncing it?' (Whilst inwardly feeling sorry for the poor kid who will be spending his entire life answering this question!) 😱🙄

Zonder · 21/07/2022 06:30

Skelligsfeathers · 20/07/2022 22:24

I would say " what on earth were you thinking?"

This.

It's not Breton, it's fiction.

fallfallfall · 21/07/2022 06:32

Julie each and every time

Luredbyapomegranate · 21/07/2022 07:09

It’s a name she invented I imagine so just ask her

TheMess · 21/07/2022 07:23

Ask her. She obviously wants everyone to ask her. Otherwise she'd have called her baby Jules. Or Julie. Or Balonz.

sorrynotathome · 21/07/2022 07:27

Ask her. Then pronounce it a different way every time. And put the accent in a different place every time you send a card. I pity the poor child.

happystory · 21/07/2022 07:32

It's so 'unusual' you'd be quite right to ask her, you won't be the only one!

OutDamnedSpot · 21/07/2022 07:35

Zonder · 21/07/2022 06:30

This.

It's not Breton, it's fiction.

It's not Breton, it's fiction.

Breton as a name though? That works.

PancakesWithCheese · 21/07/2022 09:01

What’s with the random apostrophes in the middle of names. Hmm

KirstenBlest · 21/07/2022 09:52

@bitelover , AFAIK the only letter in Breton with a ' is c'h

I'd ask how to say it and whether or not the name is registered yet

CornishPastyPirate · 21/07/2022 10:03

i think you may be right and she’s made it up
shes English as is her partner so I don’t think it’s anything other than her being creative.

Oh god how naff.

What were they thinking??

Anyway. Just ask her. She can hardly be offended if she’s just mashed some random letters together, can she.

Staynow · 21/07/2022 10:12

Wow, ridiculous. Pronounce it phonetically - Joo or Jow Lez, she'll probably delight in telling you the 'correct' pronunciation as if you're rather silly not to know it in the first place.
