Ruby or Matilda?
& any reason why you prefer one to the other.

Matilda. Classic name and I like the nickname Tilda.
Ruby is ok.

FourChimneys · 19/07/2022 07:00

Ruby, I've never known one who wasn't lovely.

IAmSantaOhYesIAm · 19/07/2022 07:16

I prefer Matilda. More nn options.
ruby is ok but don’t like ru or rubes as a nn

KangarooKenny · 19/07/2022 07:18

Ruby - but not a fan of either.

WinterMusings · 19/07/2022 07:19

I like both. I have a Ruby in my life, she's a teenager now, but was just a baby when I met her, I didn't really like the name, but she made it an absolutely perfect name!

my friend has a Matilda , Tilly & a Mumsnetter who used to post 'in the old days' has an absolutely gorgeous Matilda!

I don't think you can go wrong with either!!

WinterMusings · 19/07/2022 07:20

In fact if you want a middle name Matilda Ruby is nice, unless you want to keep it for a future DD!

Hotenoughtoburnasausage · 19/07/2022 07:32

I have a Ruby. Nearly 17 and still love it! She really suits it too!

WaltzingWaters · 19/07/2022 07:45

love both

Mumofgirls2017 · 19/07/2022 07:45

Matilda. I find Ruby a bit of a harsh name somehow

ariesalien · 19/07/2022 08:09

I like both. Probably prefer Ruby.

FlissyPaps · 19/07/2022 18:02

Ruby

Not keen on Matilda. Reminds me of the film, which gave me nightmares as a kid from Trunchbull.

KylieCharlene · 19/07/2022 18:04

Matilda nn Tilly.
I do like Ruby though.

PancakesWithCheese · 19/07/2022 18:05

Hmm, Ruby at a push but to be honest I find both have been way too popular in the last ten years.

maybein2022 · 19/07/2022 23:34

Both lovely. Matilda at a push.

Luredbyapomegranate · 20/07/2022 00:13

Matilda

Ruby is fun but Matilda a much richer name with a long history.

Youcansaythatagainandagain · 20/07/2022 00:15

Matilda.
They are two very different names. Matilda is classier.

pinklavenders · 20/07/2022 08:01

Both are way overused. They'll soon start to sound dated.

emmathedilemma · 20/07/2022 13:09

Matilda

17caterpillars1mouse · 20/07/2022 14:13

I prefer Ruby. Matilda is so overdone in my local area to the point of being dull and uninspired.

I think Ruby sounds a bit sassy or fiesty. I like that in a girls name

Gypsophiladaisy · 20/07/2022 14:55

matilda 100%, I dont know any nice ruby's and I love how Matilda could be shortened to tilda or tilly

Whichjobnow · 20/07/2022 15:14

Not sure I love Matilda as a full name (though I don't hate it) but three of my close friends are called Matilda and are known as Tilly/Tills, Tild/Tilda and Matty respectively and I love all those names (especially Matty!).

Ruby is nice (if maybe a little dated?) but the nn options for Matilda definitely give it the edge for me!

Lealea4 · 21/07/2022 16:17

I love Ruby, it is lovely name.

DariaMorgendorffer · 21/07/2022 16:25

Ruby

mathanxiety · 21/07/2022 17:11

Matilda.

Ruby makes me think of barmaids.

Carrieonmywaywardsun · 21/07/2022 17:54

Matilda. Matilda Ruby sounds nice too if you need a middle name
