Hello!

We’re expecting our second son next year. My first child is called Camilo. We’re looking for Spanish names that work well for English speakers too.

So far we have a few on our list but I’m not sure if it is love!

Mateo
Valentín
Álvaro

Any thoughts or other suggestions are welcome!

Our little boy is Diego Antonio

That’s really lovely, and easy for non-Spanish speakers!

Same as you- expecting a boy with my Spanish partner and we need names that are pronounceable in both countries-

Santiago is my favourite at the moment
I also love Mateo, but it's super popular in Spain right now and we will probably be living there in a couple of years

I also like Leo,Pablo, Álvaro (although people here might get prom a bit wrong), Alberto, Alfredo, Antonio,

Initially I wanted I name that was the same in both languages and I like Daniel, Samuel and Isaac of those options

Partner likes Marco, which is actually Italian rather than Spanish, but getting popular there - I think Mateo is actually from the Italian Matteo too and has become popular in Spain recently- Matías is the original Spanish version, I think

We've ruled out Sergio, as British people (including myself!) can't pronounce it correctly. Same goes for anything with a J and anything beginning with a R that doesn't exist in English already ( so Rafael would be ok as it's so close to Raphael, I feel it would be fine to pronounce with an English, rather than Spanish R.)

CoalTit · 16/07/2022 09:33

A lot of Spanish people pronounce Alex so that it sounds like Alice to native English speakers. That could drive you nuts.

AuditAngel · 16/07/2022 09:40

My son is Valentino, which is more common in Italy the Spain, but works. Also like Rafael

SirChenjins · 16/07/2022 09:42

Do you mean Spanish names that British people can pronounce, or British names that Spanish people can pronounce?

SirChenjins · 16/07/2022 09:45

Ignore that, my fault for not reading your OP correctly!

Chickenkorma64 · 16/07/2022 09:55

We couldn’t agree on any names that were similar in both languages, so went with Javi for DS. You usually only need to tell people how to pronounce it once.

we also liked Marcos, Alejandro, Daniel.
One of my favs was Angel, but no one would ever get that right!

Camilo and his handsome brother ..

Felipe
Gaudi - I know it's a surname but it is cute
Ricardo
Rafael
Enrique

SummaLuvin · 16/07/2022 11:22

Names with Os in them can be produced quite differently in a more Northern accent, just be aware of if that would be an issue.

SunnieShine · 16/07/2022 11:29

I love Mateo.

NeverHadANickname · 16/07/2022 11:43

Antonio is nice but I really like Mateo reading the other replies.

bailarbailar · 16/07/2022 11:45

I like David, both the Spanish and English pronunciation

StarlingsInTheRoof · 16/07/2022 11:48

I love Mateo, Hector, Diego, Valentino. I would shy away from Bruno thanks to Encanto. As soon as pp suggested it I was singing we don't talk about Bruno no no no no. It's a film loved by lots of kids currently so would be really irritating.

chiffchaffchiff · 16/07/2022 12:08

I love Alvaro, it's uncommon but lovely. Love Matteo too.
