janeseymour78 · 12/07/2022 22:03

Mad-a-lin. I'm from Glasgow.

pinklavenders · 12/07/2022 22:04

Why is everyone emphasising the MAD of Madeleine?

I'd say Mad eh LAINE with the emphasis on the LAINE.

CredibilityProblem · 12/07/2022 22:07

Spelled like that I'd say Mad-eh-leyn. But I'd say if you're planning to use it then you and your DD will need to develop a thick skin about the mad-eh-leyn vs mad-eh-lin distinction otherwise it will drive you mad(dy).

That's the French pronounciation. More common to stress the first syllable in English.

VerbenaGirl · 12/07/2022 22:09

Madder-lane, from East of England.

MolkosTeenageAngst · 12/07/2022 22:10

i would pronounce Madeleine and Madeline differently. Spelt Madeleine I would pronounce it Mad-eh-line

Spelt Madeline I would pronounce it Mad-uh-lin

pinklavenders · 12/07/2022 22:12

Ma-duh-line, London. I'm dutch though & that's how we pronounce it in the Netherlands

Festivibe · 12/07/2022 22:16

Madeleine is french and pronounced - lin. Madeline is American and sometimes pronounced line. However the ‘normal’ name is lin so whichever way you spell it lost will say this

theanxiousgardener · 12/07/2022 22:17

MAD-uh-lenn
London

Festivibe · 12/07/2022 22:18

FuckingHateRats · 12/07/2022 22:20

MAD-eh-lin (first syllable is the stressed one)

Edinburgh

MontanaMountains · 12/07/2022 22:24

I really really wanted to call my youngest daughter Madeleine (mad-er-lin) 25 years ago, but my husband wasn't keen, so we compromised, which means neither of us are particularly keen on her name. We always call her by her family nickname.

SleeplessWB · 12/07/2022 22:29

My DD is Madeleine and everyone pronounces it mad-uh-lin, although I prefer mad-uh-len but have given up on that as no one else says it the way I do. Everyone spells it Madeline which I didn't realise would be an issue as Madeleine is the more common spelling in the UK.

feellikemyselfagain · 12/07/2022 22:31

Mah de linn

North East but I don't have much of an accent

Maddiehere · 12/07/2022 22:33

I'm an Irish Madeline and I pronounce my name Mad-uh-leen. It's French and they pronounce line as leen. However, the lyne pronunciation has recently become more popular here I've noticed.

Madeleine is pronounced differently in French as pp have said, so if you want the lyne pronunciation I wouldn't choose that spelling.
But people will invariably mix up the various spellings and pronunciations anyway...

honeyfox · 12/07/2022 22:35

I'm in Ireland and the only one I know pronounces it Madda-leen.

TabithaTittlemouse · 12/07/2022 22:39

Mad el lean

I prefer Madeline (rhymes with vine at the end rather than lean).

‘In an old house in Paris that was covered with vines
Lived twelve little girls in two straight lines
In two straight lines they broke their bread
And brushed their teeth and went to bed.
They left the house at half past nine
In two straight lines in rain or shine.
The smallest one was Madeline’.

easyday · 12/07/2022 22:48
