Madeleine Mad-a-lin
Madaline Mad-a-line

ChristmasJumpers · 12/07/2022 20:19

I also like the name Madeline OP but would definitely spell it that way. Madeleine is Ma-de-lin here (Lancashire)

Thighdentitycrisis · 12/07/2022 20:20

Madeline: Madda lin
Madeleine: Madduh line
in south east

first version is more usual in U.K.
I think the other is French ?

Thighdentitycrisis · 12/07/2022 20:21

child will likely be known as Maddy either way!

collieresponder88 · 12/07/2022 20:21

Madalin. Essex

KittenKong · 12/07/2022 20:22

Mah - deh - len. London - but I woke with one and that’s how she says it.

PuppyMonkey · 12/07/2022 20:22

I have a 25 year old DD Madeleine pronounced Madda-Lynn - East Mids.

Although she’s always Maddie tbf.

are you saying you’d pronounce the ending line to rhyme with fine? That would be a big no for me tbh.

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 12/07/2022 20:23

Somewhere between Mad'lin and Mad-eh-lin.

The other spelling would be Mad-e-line (In an old house in Paris that was covered in vines etc etc).

Blowyourowntrumpet · 12/07/2022 20:24

Madder lin

Slushycup · 12/07/2022 20:26

I have a name that ends in 'ine' but I do regularly get called the 'lyn' version. I just correct people.

Your DC name will probably be abbreviated to Maddie or similar anyway.

ApolloandDaphne · 12/07/2022 20:27

I would say something between Mad-a-Lin and Mad-a-Lane but never Mad-a-Line. I am Scottish.

AgathaMystery · 12/07/2022 20:27

mad a line (London)

CharlotteOH · 12/07/2022 20:31

Maddalin. From London.

But if I was talking to someone posh I’d probably automatically say Madday-LANE.

chubbachub · 12/07/2022 20:32

The first one I read as madda-lane. The second spelling I read as madda-lin

No idea why.
Central scotland

PaniDomu · 12/07/2022 20:34

Maddalen

Magdalena is nicer.

jmh740 · 12/07/2022 20:34

My best frie d as a child was madeline we pronounced it mad uh lin in Lancashire

Shinyandnew1 · 12/07/2022 20:35

Mad-uh-len

south east

woolwinder · 12/07/2022 20:38

Anxiernie · 12/07/2022 20:15

I would say Mad-uh-lin, but my brain really wants to say Mad-uh-lane

Mine wants to say Mad -eh-lane

winnieanddaisy · 12/07/2022 20:39

Madalane. Also from the NW

HappyGoDucky · 12/07/2022 20:40

Londoner- Mad-eh- linn

The movie madeline was pronounced Mad-eh- line.
So I'd go for this spelling if it's what you want.

barelyfunctional · 12/07/2022 20:41

Madeleine is Mad-uh-LIN
Madeline is Mad-uh-LINE

HappyHappyHermit · 12/07/2022 20:42

Mad uh lyn - SW

Luredbyapomegranate · 12/07/2022 20:44

MA-dah-lin

In French it’s more MAH-da-LEN - you hardly here the middle syllable - it’s closer to 2 syllables than 3 - and the end is different.

All the British ones I know are known as Maddy day to day

AlwaysLatte · 12/07/2022 20:44

Madda-Lain but maybe that's because I make the little sponge cakes with that name and have always pronounced them that way.

Luredbyapomegranate · 12/07/2022 20:45

barelyfunctional · 12/07/2022 20:41

Madeleine is Mad-uh-LIN
Madeline is Mad-uh-LINE

It is not.

The latter is just a simplified Anglo spelling of a French name.
