Madeleine or Rose?

madeleinerose · 11/07/2022 06:38

Unfortunately there is a slightly negative connection with the name Madeleine, however Madeleine McCann isn’t a topic that is well known in the area I live. However, Rose is a family name and DH loves it. It’s his top choice but Madeleine is mine. I prefer longer names but I dislike the variants of Rose and would only use the short one. Any opinions on Madeleine or Rose?

Madeleine. but then we have a 21 year old Madeleine.

Madeleine and Maddie is cute as a nickname. Rose is hugely overused as a filler middle name, and it’s quite popular as a first name.

I guess if neither of you like each other’s names though you’ll have to find something else.

SummaLuvin · 11/07/2022 09:09

I prefer Madeleine, but really dislike Maddie/Maddy, that would stop me using it.

Rose is pretty and inoffensive, but I find it quite plain. If it's a family name that you DH loves maybe consider it for a middle name.

I think you need to discuss more names to find a name you both love for the given name.

3amAndImStillAwake · 11/07/2022 09:23

Of the two, I prefer Rose. Partly because generally speaking, I prefer shorter names, and partly because I don't like Maddie as a nickname.

But if neither of you like the other one's preferred name, I think you need to find something else.

Rose never gets abbreviated.

As for Madeleine, an apologist for the McCanns could be Deputy Prime Minister so the name will continue to have connotations.

SpaceJamtart · 11/07/2022 10:09

I like them both
My friend wanted Madeleine but she was worried about the mccann reference so she called her Madeline, its easier to spell and if you google the name it is mostly the childrens book character. This was about 2007 though, so maybe more relevant then

mistygem · 11/07/2022 10:19

I love Madeleine so that gets my vote. Madeleine Rose is also pretty, but voting for Madeleine.

trexed · 11/07/2022 10:21

Madeleine - and I love Maddie/Maddy.

LadyWithLapdog · 11/07/2022 10:23

Use both. Madeleine Rose sounds really sweet. I wouldn’t be put off by poor MMC connotation. It’s a pretty name.

How would you pronounce it? Mad-leyne, Mad-lyn?

farmerboy · 11/07/2022 10:24

I prefer Rose. Don't like Maddy,sorry.

Itsbackagain · 11/07/2022 10:28

Madeline just takes me straight to MMC although it's not a name I like anyway - it gives visions of those sharp faced wee girls with scraped back pigtails - did not actually realise that till just now! Rose is elegant and timeless.

What are you on about?

chilledbubble · 11/07/2022 11:01

I can't stand "Maddie" so I'd choose Rose.

myriama · 11/07/2022 15:06

I assume you don't live in the UK, Ireland or Portugal if Madeleine McCann isn't a famous case where you are.

I think they're both nice names. I prefer the sound of Madeleine to Rose myself, though I'm not hugely keen on the nickname Maddie.

Wouldloveanother · 11/07/2022 15:09

Oh I love them both! I didn’t use either in the end, DH wasn’t keen on Rose and we couldn’t get past the McCann connection 😞 but as that isn’t an issue for you, I would say Madeleine Rose. Gorgeous name

madeleinerose · 11/07/2022 15:16

Our names are still on each other’s lists, alas a bit low, DH doesn’t care for names as long as it’s not gender neutral or outlandish. He’s not a fan of those types of names. He’s left majority of the naming to me, minus throwing Rose and a couple others onto the list.

I live in the UK, however where I am the case isn’t something that many people remember.

We prefer the Mad-eh-lehn pronunciation but I like all pronunciations anyways so it’s not a bother.

I do like how short and sweet Rose is, however it feels like there is something missing that is there with Madeleine for me.

I like Rose.

daisypond · 11/07/2022 20:32

I like both. If I had to choose, it would be Madeleine.

Luredbyapomegranate · 11/07/2022 22:33

Madeleine - because it’s less overused, but only if you don’t mind Maddie, because it will be shortened (you could impose Lena from the start)

Otherwise Rose - it’s lovely, but done to death

Butterbeer4All · 11/07/2022 23:07

They're both nice but I prefer Rose

Luxa · 12/07/2022 06:01

Rosaline

itstrue · 12/07/2022 06:17

I have a Madeleine and it never gets shortened so the Maddie nickname isn't a sure thing (I don't like it either). We use a pet name for her at home and no one else seems to shorten it

VickerishAllsort · 12/07/2022 21:30

Madeleine. Rose is just dull.

TheFreaksShallInheritTheEarth · 12/07/2022 23:54

Rose is just dull

Ah, come now... what could be more beautiful and fragrant than a rose? 🌹🌹🌹

I much prefer Rose to Madeleine.

DramaAlpaca · 12/07/2022 23:56

Rose for me, for no better reason than I prefer short names.
