Lilith

Hi, I am due soon and have chosen the name of my baby. She is going to be called Lilith. My parents have basically said if I call her that, then there is no way she can be baptised as it is demonic. I know the origins of the name, but don't see why it is an issue. Her other name will be Rebekkah....so compromise. Am I actually making a mistake ?

Yes you are making a mistake! Put a vote on here and see what the consensus is.

Why would you saddle your child with a name that means she-demon and other such awful things?

The whole joke in Frasier was that his ex-wife was called Lilith and she was a complete nightmare.

DotDotDotDotDot · 22/06/2022 08:17

Well it’s up to you really, I wouldn’t use it personally. Name meanings are important to me but I appreciate not everyone thinks this way. I prefer the sound of Lillian anyway given the choice.

ComfyChairPose · 22/06/2022 08:18

No, don't, I can see why you like it but the name of Fraser's x wife was chosen well, and deliberately. as pp says, it has some awful meaning.

I like Judith, that 's stronger in its sound but doesn't have a terrible meaning.
Lily Judith?
Lilian Beth
Bethan
Lily Miriam is lovely.
Libby

Any of those hit near the mark?

astoundedgoat · 22/06/2022 08:20

Well, your parents are overreacting to say she literally can't be baptised, but it's definitely a statement name for many people/cultures/religions. Do you have a philosophical reason behind it that make it important to you or is it just "it sounds nice"?

When I was a goth I would have been all over it (along with Raven and Winter) but now I would just wonder if the parents actually knew what it meant if I heard the name.

buntywindermere · 22/06/2022 08:20

Surely, you want your baby baptised because you believe in God, and if you believe in God enough to make the baptismal promises on behalf of your child, you wouldn't give her a name with those kind of connotations.

Schmz · 22/06/2022 08:20

Awful 😢

EvelynParker · 22/06/2022 08:21

I know a child called Lucifer so you know I'm sure there's more kids with names like that.

Your baby, your choice.

Soubriquet · 22/06/2022 08:22

I love it.

Spudina · 22/06/2022 08:23

Sorry OP but it’s a bad decision. I love the name Lucifer (thanks to the TV show!) but wouldn’t use it.

Fashiontatts · 22/06/2022 08:26

Controversially, I actually think the name itself it lovely! Sounds really pretty. And Lilith was Adam's first wife, who was banished from the garden of Eden for not "obeying" Adam... the connotation of such a feisty woman makes me like the name even more 🤣
But I must admit, I personally wouldn't want to name my children with names that are so divisive, even if I loved them, because it's them who need to live with it. However if you like it, then you go for it. I'd rather hear of a baby Lilith than half of the absolute nonsense, made up names I've heard shouted at soft play!

KappaChino · 22/06/2022 08:38

It's a bit mean to saddle a child with a name that has a single really strong negative association, just because you like it. She'll have to live with it. Posters trying to saddle their child with a name that proves they're really unique on here often say, Oh, so Fred (West) or Margaret (Thatcher) is fine but Adolf/Myra/Satan/Judas isn't?! But that's because there aren't any fun examples of Adolf the philanthropic pop star or Satan the pioneering inventor.

tsmainsqueeze · 22/06/2022 08:40

I love it , most people would be unaware of its meaning anyway.

Whitehorsegirl · 22/06/2022 08:45

Come on be sensible with this...you are not naming a pet or a rock festival.

Your child will have to live with this all her life. Lillith will have negative connotations for many.

I would use Lilly or Lucy instead or something else but not that. Or just have this as a middle name so that your daughter can choose to use it when she is older and can make her own decisions.

Lucifer and Mephistopheles might be cool names too but they are best kept for dogs and horses...

PeekAtYou · 22/06/2022 08:50

Are you religious?

Personally I like the name but I'm an atheist so the connotations don't bother me. If I was religious I'd go for a similar bug alternative name like Lilian, Lily, Lily Beth etc

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 22/06/2022 08:51

I had no idea of the meaning, I think it's a beautiful name.

pamshortsbrokenbothherlegs · 22/06/2022 08:53

I actually love Lilith, the sound and the references (which, as a previous poster pointed out, are quite different when viewed through a feminist lens - even Frasier's wife wasn't all that bad when you re-watch the show! Much misogyny at play). However, there's no denying that a huge portion of the people your daughter will meet throughout her life will feel differently, as this thread shows. I wouldn't do that to my own child, personally.

Is there anything else you like, OP?

CindyToffipop · 22/06/2022 08:56

My friend had a tarantula called Lilith. One of the most inspired pet names I’ve ever heard but not for a baby, please! I say this as a big Cheers/Frasier fan!

Pomtiddly · 22/06/2022 09:09

Unlike most other posters on this thread I had no idea that it had negative connotations. I just know it from Frasier, it's a pretty sounding name.

EnterACloud · 22/06/2022 09:16

I like it and most people won’t have a clue. If she’s being raised in religious circles though then she’ll have quite a tough time and I wouldn’t.

FayCarew · 22/06/2022 09:20

It's dreadful, and there are so many Lily/Lila/Lyla/Lolas etc around that it doesn't even seem fresh.

Rebecca or Rebekah is ok. Rebekkah isn't.

hammsalllad · 22/06/2022 09:22

I'm not religious, but I wouldn't.

"Lilith was believed to have a special power for evil over children . . . (she) becomes the first wife of Adam, but flies away from him and becomes a demon" (1911 Encyclopedia Britannica).

SunnyShiner · 22/06/2022 09:32

It sounds dreadful in my southern accent.

It's a terrible name really with the meaning etc.

Squashedraddish · 22/06/2022 09:35

I know a little 7 year old Lilith. I had no idea of the names meaning though! I do prefer the sound of Lilian or Lilwen.

LindaEllen · 22/06/2022 09:53

I like the name - but I would never name a child something that could put a target on them for nasty comments. It's just not fair.
