Lilith

Hi, I am due soon and have chosen the name of my baby. She is going to be called Lilith. My parents have basically said if I call her that, then there is no way she can be baptised as it is demonic. I know the origins of the name, but don't see why it is an issue. Her other name will be Rebekkah....so compromise. Am I actually making a mistake ?

How about other names which contain the L, TH or I sounds?

Luneth (related to the name Luna)
Elspeth
Leila
Lorelei
Thea
Talitha
Ianthe
Elisabeth
Alyssa
Larissa

There’s a trend for reclaiming names, Delilah is very trendy, and Lilith is also starting to spike in popularity. Personally, I’d try to avoid any names which are controversial or culturally charged in some way, as it doesn’t seems fair to pass on avoidable baggage to a child (and names are identity - it’s the first piece of information she’ll give to most people she meets). I would find it odd to have a baby called Lilith baptised though not sure if would be an issue (maybe speak to someone at your place to worship to ask, if it’s a concern). Lilith is unappealing sonically to me, and the nickname Lily is full as dishwater so I’d avoid for that reason as well.

DontLikeCoffee · 22/06/2022 11:16

I had no idea of the name meaning so not everyone will know. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Love Rebekah as a middle name, not Rebekkah.

Dodgygeezer · 22/06/2022 11:35

A lot of pearl clutching going on in this thread. Since when did people take this biblical claptrap seriously?

In a world where there are abundant Delilahs and even Jezebels, I don't see why Lilith should be off the table. Nice name, go for it

SpaceJamtart · 22/06/2022 12:01

I really like Lilith, its a pretty cool name
And I wouldn't care about the bible stuff, mostly because other children won't care, the Lilith stuff isn't in childrens bibles, or taught in schools etc and adult Lilith can probably hold her own

ComfyChairPose · 22/06/2022 12:52

I wouldnt call some awareness of names' meanings pearl clutching.

FayCarew · 22/06/2022 12:58

@SpaceJamtart , other children might not but teachers and future employers will, and the child will be judged for their parents' choice of name

Cocowatermelon · 22/06/2022 12:59

What’s the problem pp have with the spelling Rebekkah? It’s just a variant of Rebecca/Rebekah.

Ncwinc · 22/06/2022 13:03

Lilith is a good illustration of how misogyny is wound into the roots of organised religion. A woman refusing to be subjugated, particularly sexually, is labelled wicked, wanton, demon. Not in my top 10 baby names though Wink

Ncwinc · 22/06/2022 13:08

Judith or Jael are good biblical names Grin

Teachers shouldn't.
But the name is still an ordinary name, its not like calling her Maleficent- a made up name for a witch, where the only use of that name is the witch and then trying to seperate the asssociation.

Lilith is a normal name, that other people are called, and was also the name of a bible character. I know two women called Lilith, for not religious people its just a name, silmilar to Lilian or Lilia or Lila etc.

And as more and more kids are called a wider variety of names and there is more cultural crossover now than there has been in history, in 20 years when Lilith is trying to get employed, she is unlikely to have employers judge her for what is quite a normal name.

A lot of judgement for names comes from people making negative assumptions about peoples background, I just dont think you get much from Lilith. Ive met a little boy called Cain, not a great person in the bible but nobody in real life cared, or decided that he was a small evil boy. I would think cain is a more unusual name with a stronger asocciation than Lilith

Sorry OP but please put your child first. She's the one who'll be living with the name, not you. Spending half the time justifying and explaining a name choice (because you will have to) detracts from the actual child. What if she's not a bold and feisty Adam's first wife type, but just wants a peaceful life? She may well resent you for it.

The second name you chose is a great option with just as much character.

Saharafordessert · 22/06/2022 13:26

Your parents are right.

Ariela · 22/06/2022 13:37

Awful name. Call her Lillette instead. That'll keep the relatives happy!
😆

ProfessorFusspot · 22/06/2022 13:41

On a practical level - the Roman Catholic catechism states that "parents, sponsors, and the pastor are to see that a name is not given which is foreign to Christian sentiment", but there's also a strong tradition that parents have the priviliege of choosing the name that God will use to communicate with their child. There is not, from any official source, a universal list of excluded names.

Certain Protestant sects - perhaps evangelical? - may have more strict guidelines. I would simply check with your parish priest, pastor, minister, etc - whoever would be performing or overseeing the baptism - to make sure there wouldn't be an objection raised to the specific name. ("Sponsors", I believe, refers to godparents, at least in the RC tradition - so perhaps check with these as well, once you have considered priest's/pastor's response, to make sure they will not balk).

Rahab also Grin

Yodaisawally · 22/06/2022 14:04

I'm catholic and I never knew that! Admittedly a bad catholic...

TheWayoftheLeaf · 22/06/2022 14:48

I love it and always have but the connotations to anyone religious will not be nice.

I'd still go for it tbh.

TheWayoftheLeaf · 22/06/2022 14:48

Chamomileteaplease · 22/06/2022 08:15

Yes you are making a mistake! Put a vote on here and see what the consensus is.

Why would you saddle your child with a name that means she-demon and other such awful things?

The whole joke in Frasier was that his ex-wife was called Lilith and she was a complete nightmare.

It also means other things to other people. The rebellious first woman, refusal to obey etc.

EdgeOfACoin · 22/06/2022 15:16

Lilith isn't in the Bible. She is a figure from Jewish mythology.

TheLovleyChebbyMcGee · 22/06/2022 15:22

I actually think its a beautiful name, but it has strong, well known demonic connotations so its a no from me!

Love rebellious first woman!!

SirenSays · 22/06/2022 16:17

I don't think it's a bad name. The religious stuff wouldn't put me off at all but I do think it sounds a bit lispy

caringcarer · 22/06/2022 16:49

Is that from the Anne McCaffrey dragon books. I think there was a dragon called Lilleth.

hamdden12 · 22/06/2022 17:01

It's heartwarming to see so many religious people on this post. I have to admit I never realised that religion was so popular in the UK with all these churches closing 🙄

Calm her what you like OP because the vast majority of people won't associate it with religion unless they watch the tv show supernatural 😂
