Hi, I am due soon and have chosen the name of my baby. She is going to be called Lilith. My parents have basically said if I call her that, then there is no way she can be baptised as it is demonic. I know the origins of the name, but don't see why it is an issue. Her other name will be Rebekkah....so compromise. Am I actually making a mistake ?

I wouldn't
How about Lilian
Elspeth
Judith( I'm a Judith and have never met another!)

Rubygloomy · 22/06/2022 17:03

I love it but I'm quite gothy!

UrsulaPandress · 22/06/2022 17:08

I love it.

Strong independent feisty woman who takes no shit from men.

What’s not to like 🤷‍♀️

ClarissaD · 22/06/2022 17:11

Another vote for Judith or Yael if you want a non-compliant biblical woman.

bloodyunicorns · 22/06/2022 17:17

Lilith is awful. Why would you saddle your poor baby with that name?

Rebekkah is not the right spelling - it's Rebekah or Rebecca.

Hth.

KappaChino · 22/06/2022 17:23

I don't know that 'being religious' is such a gotcha. Most kids like to find out which other famous people they share their names with, and it's a bit of a facer to discover your only choices are the woman who was thrown out of paradise or Frasier's ex wife.

ClarissaD · 22/06/2022 17:26

Frasier’s ex was a brilliant character whose only fault was being cleverer than Frasier, if you ask me. (Still don’t think you should use the name.)

She was fantastic!

MerryMarigold · 22/06/2022 17:42

I didn't know the connotations but it didn't sound nice to me anyway (maybe subconsciously I have heard of it). I think it sounds like an evil creature in Lord of the rings - beware the Lillith. It's the 'ith' bit with connotations. Lily and Lillian (and dare I say Lillibet) don't sound evil.

SommerTen · 22/06/2022 17:48

My cousins baby girl's name is Ebony Lilith...

Her parents are Goth Pagans. I think.

Bless little Ebony, she's adorable & actually almost ginger with lovely blue eyes.

rnsaslkih · 22/06/2022 17:53

I would just use Lily. Very similar sound but worlds apart re connotations.

Yorkshireteabags · 22/06/2022 17:54

I wouldnt. Think of school and other kids

clarepetal · 22/06/2022 17:54

I think it's lovely

MrsOwainGlyndŵr · 22/06/2022 18:01

I love it! Though I find the ls and the th quite difficult to say so close together.

TheLightSideOfTheMoon · 22/06/2022 18:07

It’s a beautiful name.

Avoiding because it’s the name of an ex-wife from a 90s television would be most odd.

FrownedUpon · 22/06/2022 18:14

No, surely the connotations put you off naming your daughter that? I would think it really weird or ignorant if someone called their baby that.

Luredbyapomegranate · 22/06/2022 20:40

Well firstly, I don't think many people are that familiar with her, it's not like being called Jezebel

Secondly she's being reclaimed a bit I think (by Christian and Jewish feminists) as an independent female symbol who wouldn't put up with being sidelined in Eden etc, and has been unfairly, um, demonised, as a result of that

So I'd use it if you want, or although I personally wouldn't because it's lispy and hard to say

Titsflyingsouth · 22/06/2022 22:07

To be honest, I would avoid. Not only does it have a contentious meaning, but it's also a difficult sound to get your tongue around. Lillian is an easier alternative IMO...

Enko · 22/06/2022 22:19

I love Lilith as a name but it will out some off. However I met a young Lucider fairly recently so compared Lilith is mild

If you love it go for.it imo

rickandmorts · 22/06/2022 22:24

I love the name and had absolutely no idea of the negative connotations!

User6761 · 22/06/2022 23:01

I associate it with Frasier.

Lillian is nicer I think. Or Elspeth, Ruth or Beth if it's the 'th' sound at the end you like?

Thinkingblonde · 22/06/2022 23:19

My niece has named her baby Lilith, I had no idea of the meaning of the name. I thought it was a nod to her mother, the babies grandmother, Elizabeth.
I think it is a lovely name,

peaceinourtime · 23/06/2022 00:19

Lilith as a name isn't good. Rebekkah spelt at way as a middle name is just as a bad. Rebekkah-KKK

janeseymour78 · 23/06/2022 00:42

You cannot call your child Lilith. Come on!

FrancescaJade1 · 23/06/2022 07:39

I'm calling her Rebekkah....thanks for your comments.
