What's the most unusual baby name that you've encountered recently?

I mean real names not La-A and Lemonjello or Chlamydia or other urban legends.

A friend in the U.S has called her baby son, Sundance. I rather like it in a way though I was taken aback at first.

I met a McLaren recently too, not as unusual as Sundance but not something that you encounter every day either.

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

Teddy, London and Holland, all girls. A friend has just called her DD Magnolia and I think of the paint colour every time.

I know a Ruud pronounced Rude.

English family.

This is quite common in the Netherlands, short for Rudolf

I love some of the names on this thread. Sholto and Agatha are gorgeous!

Some of the names on here (Io, Kaan, Simi) are perfectly normal names in other languages.

My great uncle was called Thor (Norwegian family!) and we considered it for DS but the Marvel association has spoiled it for me; we also knew no one would pronounce it Tor so we decided against it. DS is called Magnus which some people probably think is quite out there, but it's a very normal Scandinavian name.

JustRestingMyEyesForAMinute · 17/06/2022 10:08

Torin and Thorin are popular here, it was on our shortlist.

I know a Dax and a Bowie (both boys) in the same class. I'm quite used to them now but I was taken aback at first.

I am obviously not cool but I don't really like the old man/old lady trend at all. DD's baby class has Rupert, Geoffrey, Vinny, Tommy and Alec in it. The girls are more mixed but there are a lot of Mabel, Florence, Ivy, Violet, Effie, type names.

I really like unusual, underused names but not so keen on random words being used as names, or weird spellings of things being used.

I met a Shem once, his brothers had Biblical names too but I don’t remember them.

Poor kid. Shem means name literally.
