Which one would take your vote? I prefer Eugene nn gene. Edgar is lovely as a full name but do not like Ed/Eddy nn.

I prefer Eugene.

I don't like Edgar

MadameDragon · 09/06/2022 14:05

Eugene but only because it isn’t Edgar.
Gene is nice.

AllPlayedOut · 09/06/2022 14:11

Edgar is ok.

Eugene is one of the ugliest names ever.Gene is just as bad.

Anotherdayanotherdollar · 09/06/2022 14:14

Neither are to my taste, but I'd choose Edgar over Eugene. Can't get on board with Eugene at all... I've never met a Eugene that I liked, and it reminds me if eugenics

legalseagull · 09/06/2022 14:23

He'd have to be REALLY cool and good looking to pull off Edgar.

DolphinaPD · 09/06/2022 14:25

I'd choose Edward.

Bettethebuilder · 09/06/2022 14:59

Edgar is fab. I really dislike Eugene.

SummaLuvin · 09/06/2022 15:12

I find Eugene an entirely unappealing name. Edgar I think is quite charming.

However, if Ed/Eddy nicknames are complete no goes for you then you have to rule out Edgar. It isn't inevitable, some Edgar's will never shorten their names, but can't ever rule out the possibility that your little Edgar might like being an Ed.

Yodaisawally · 09/06/2022 15:44

Eugene if I had to but really I'd go with something else.

User6761 · 09/06/2022 16:06

Neither are to my taste, but if you dislike Ed then that definitely rules out Edgar.

Personally, I like Ed so would have suggested Edmund or Edward as alternatives.

If you like Gene, do you like Gus? (short for Angus or Fergus?)

pinklavenders · 09/06/2022 16:23

Eugene

I'd avoid Edgar as you don't like Ed

Fivebeanchilli · 09/06/2022 16:40

I know a 17 year old Edgar and a 20 year old Edgar. Neither ever get shortened. I don't like Eugene at all. It reminds me of Tangled.

HalcyonDave · 09/06/2022 16:49

I’d just go with Gene. It’s such a great name by itself
Don’t like Edgar at all, too stern!

I loved Gene Kelly (he was a Eugene) thought he was one of the nicest actors unless he was just acting in his interviews.

BinBandit · 09/06/2022 16:53

I love Edgar (and Edwin) not a great fan of Eugene, I know one who calls himself by his middle name instead.

Runningslow · 09/06/2022 16:53

Gene sounds like Jean, which I always think of as an old ladies name

crosstalk · 09/06/2022 18:03

Edgar is a great old English name. Along with Edward and Edwin. Just don't let it be shortened.

Eugene is a Franco-American name often shortened to Gene as in Pitney etc.

Go for what you like!

clpsmum · 09/06/2022 18:07

They're both ugly names tbh

toastofthetown · 09/06/2022 18:46

I prefer Eugene. I think it has a fun charm. Edgar is a no go if Ed/Eddie is unacceptable for you, and it just makes me think of the butler from the Aristocats.

SummaLuvin · 09/06/2022 18:59

makes me think of the butler from the Aristocats

That butler is bloody hilarious. Eugene is that nerd from Grease.

itssquidstella · 09/06/2022 19:11

I love Eugene/Gene.

According to the baby name site I looked at it came to England from France in the 11th century. So it has been here a while.

Olga03 · 09/06/2022 19:13

I think Edgar is a charming and beautiful name. Really dislike Eugene, don't think it suits a toddler.

LadyApplejack · 09/06/2022 19:15

Neither, I think they'd be hard to go through life with.

bridgetreilly · 09/06/2022 20:01

Edgar!! It’s such a great name and deserves to be a lot more popular.
