Laila, Leila or Layla

Nerissa

If you like Carys/Cerys (Welsh origin) and Nieve, then Nia is the Welsh form of Nieve/Niamh. Close also to Zara in that it’s 2-syllable.

You might also like:

Cara
Cora
Etta
Eloise
Honor
Felicity

I've never heard Nausicaa before. Where's it from? Quite pretty, I'm not convinced by the double a at the end.

I love Zara, Cerys and Carys. Like Nieve. Not keen on Ottilie or Mariah.

How about:
Aphra, Astrid, Ariel, Amberley, Bronte, Callie, Celeste, Clarice, Dulcie, Ebony, Effie, Erin, Ffion, Giselle, Halle, Hazel, Iona, Ida, Inez, Jemima, Josie, Katy, Livia, Leona.

JaffacakeJanine · 06/06/2022 00:48

@blameitonthecaffeine there is a character in a Japanese animated Ghibli film called Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind (1984). A strong female character who wants to save the environment (and fantastic movie, it aged very well)

Rosalie
Colette
Lois
Emmeline

Palavah · 06/06/2022 07:26

Is Nieve an attempt to anglicise Niamh? You're better off with the latter, I think.

blameitonthecaffeine · 06/06/2022 07:27

Thanks Jaffacake . That's a good association.

@blameitonthecaffeine
Nausicaa is famously a figure from Homer’s Odyssey, much older than a Japanese animation.

DuchessOfSausage · 06/06/2022 08:28

Nieve is awful as is Ottolie
Nausicaa nn Nause?

It's from the Odyssey, Greek myth. I read it in A-Levels and fell in love with it. It is pronounced Nor-SIK-Aya and it's to do with nautical stuff as she was something to do with the sea or water, as I remember, it was a long time ago.

I was also taught in A-Levels that the name Maria is the Italian way to say the English name Mariah, pronounced like Carey, and I love it. She may have been wrong but I've never questioned her, she was my English Lit teacher and we were doing Jane Austen and she pronounced the name Mariah that way from one of her books.

I'm very into names, but can't decide on another. Boys' name is even more difficult! Plus I can't agree with my husband who likes John or Fred etc. and I know I'm being a narcissist but I want a name that's a bit more original/not heard every day.
