If there are any more I'd love to hear. I'm impressed the list is longer now.

Also, need boys'. I only like Bruce or names that are more everyday, which I don't want.

Our heritage is mostly Celtic/English, I'm also happy to revive a much older name.

Nieve seems an unusual spelling...is it a form of Niamh? Or does it rhyme with sieve?

DuchessOfSausage · 06/06/2022 12:18

I like the Sieve suggestion. I thought it sounded like Naïve

In Jane Austen, it’s spelled Maria.

KirstenBlest · 06/06/2022 13:16

The traditional English pronunciation of Maria was Mar-eye-ah. Sophia was Soph-eye-ah until fairly recently.
You'd not get those pronunciations now

My favourites would be Ines, Cerys and Vivienne, in that order.

If you want something unusual, there are quite a few you might want to discount

Ottolie - it’s Ottilie. It’s having a real moment so I wouldn’t use it if you want something original. It’s also a bit fussy. Leonie? Odessa? Octavia?

Zara - nice. Quite popular. Stella, Flora, Aphra, Astra would be less popular alternatives

Mariah - I like the pronunciation - it’s the old English way of saying Maria (the Italian is Ma-ree-ah like we say it now).. but the spelling does make me think M Carey

Nieve - it’s spelt Niamh. I think it blurs too much with all the Eves

Vivienne/Vivian - really like the first version, second simpler spelling is Vivien for a girl, Vivian is the male.

Carys/Cerys - love it

Ines - love it and woefully underused. Lois is also nice

Roseanne - prefer Rosanna

Maeve - sounds like Mauve. Also no good if you want something unusual

Rosalie -Rosanna is nicer

Isa - Short for Isabella?

Ariel - Ok

Noah/Noa - Noah is male, Noa female. It’s getting very popular

Noelle - no, maybe as the middle name of a Christmas baby

Jemima - nice, if a little twee

You do still get the odd So-fye-ah, but they are very much at the posh end.. eg the actress Sophia Miles

From your updated list:
Ottolie - I quite like the name but not this spelling. Ottilie is much nicer.
Zara - it's a nice name but I think it's too linked to the shop now
Mariah - I don't like this. Partly because the Jane Austen character is annoying, partly because I don't like that spelling
Nieve - Niamh is ok. I don't like this spelling. Partly because i think 50% of the population think this is how you spell naive
Vivienne/Vivian - nice. I prefer the Vivien spelling.
Carys/Cerys - I love both of these
Ines - it's ok.
Roseanne - too frilly for me. The Rosanne spelling is much better
Maeve - ok
Rosalie - nice
Ariel - too Disney princess
Noah/Noa - Noa is ok. Not the -h for a girl. I would assume you were Jewish
Noelle - I like this a lot
Jemima - far and away my favourite

Nieves is nicer as a name than Nieve. It means ‘snows’ in Spanish. Blanca Nieves is Snow White in Spanish speaking countries.

LittlemissMama67 · 12/06/2022 19:55

Maeve, Mabel, Edie

Nieve just looks totally wrong in my opinion it should be Niamh. If you’re going to use an Irish name you might as well spell it the Irish way. It’s different with certain names that are commonly anglicised but Niamh isn’t one of them. Although I did meet a Neve once which is still marginally better than Nieve (which makes me think of a sieve) It’s a lovely name though.

I also think Ottolie should be Ottilie. Unless you wanted to go for something like Ottoline which is similar.
In my head I’ve always thought it was Noah = boy, Noa = girl although I accept that might not be a widely held view!

Spellings aside, my favourites of yours are Carys, Cerys, Rosalie and Roseanne.
