Memphis for boy?

im prepared for people to not like this name on mumsnet because most people stick to classics but I’m in love with this name for my little boy. I live in England but he was conceived in Memphis tennessee when we were away on holiday… I know it’s out there but i think it’s really unique and cool and I’ve always liked these kind of names anyway. To me it isn’t that odd because there is an actual meaning to why I’m using it. I’m aware it’s not everyone’s cup of tea but what’s everyone’s thoughts?

It’s not for me but it’s your baby and your choice. If you love it do it!

BlueKaftan · 30/05/2022 14:33

In America he’d fit right in. In England he’d need a good cover story, like his parents met in Memphis in Egypt whilst studying….

ForestFae · 30/05/2022 14:34

It’s very American, not for me but it’s also not horrendous.

mumsiedarlingrevolta · 30/05/2022 14:36

yikes.

No child wants to be called after the place his parents had sex I am looking at you victoria beckham

I think it comes across as very "try hard to be cool and out there"

ArmWrestlingWithChasNDave · 30/05/2022 14:36

To me it isn’t that odd because there is an actual meaning to why I’m using it

"Oh, little Memph, it's a beautiful story. You were concieved there! So every time you hear your name, think of Mummy and Daddy having sex."

nearlyspringyay · 30/05/2022 14:37

Awful. Sorry. Memphis isn't somewhere I'd really want to be associated with, racist overtones, and now I've got 'walking in Memphis' stuck in my head.

thelittlestrhino · 30/05/2022 14:38

I don't particularly like it as a name, but it's your baby. Naming it after where you had sex though, is spectacularly tacky IMO.

nearlyspringyay · 30/05/2022 14:38

OP not suggesting you are racist AT ALL, but the city is.

moomims · 30/05/2022 14:38

You must be having a laugh, it would be hideous to be named after the place you were conceived!

FoggySpecs · 30/05/2022 14:38

I'm sorry it is utterly dreadful. You cannot saddle a child with something so monstrous because he was conceived there, I know you said you were prepared for people not to like it but you need to be practical and kinder to your child.

toastofthetown · 30/05/2022 14:38

Naming children after where they were conceived seems weird to me. Memphis is also sonically unappealing. It fails the ‘would I want this to me my name?’ test. It’s not that I’m opposed to unusual names, just I don’t like anything about Memphis as a name.

SummaLuvin · 30/05/2022 14:39

I’m not fond of it.

Beyond the name itself, the meaning for him will be commemorating the location his parents were “getting busy” that’s not something I would like personally.

VeryQuaintIrene · 30/05/2022 14:39

Sorry, but it reminds me of how Bolton Smilie in Waterloo Road got his name.

Bobbins36 · 30/05/2022 14:40

It’s a bit Brooklyn Beckham no? That was pretty tasteless too.

BreadInCaptivity · 30/05/2022 14:44

Sorry I find it cringeworthy to saddle your child with a name reminding the world where their parents dance the fandango.

Doesn't matter if it's Memphis, Brooklyn or Grimsby.

collieresponder88 · 30/05/2022 14:46

My niece is called Memphis she's six. I've never heard it for a boy. I will be honest I do t like it and it's never grown on me in six years. It's so awkward to say it just doesn't flow !

GingerFigs · 30/05/2022 14:47

Thank fuck he wasn't conceived in a Premier Inn in Solihull.

Nothing wrong with Solihull, just pointing out the ridiculous reason for giving a poor child this name.

KirstenBlest · 30/05/2022 14:49

Good job he wasn't conceived in a lay by

User3568975431146 · 30/05/2022 14:50

No

KirstenBlest · 30/05/2022 14:51

Tennessee would be better than Memphis.
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tennessee_Williams

Thomas is a fine name

MagicTurtle · 30/05/2022 14:52

I know a non-American Memphis, she is a girl though.

TheDuchessOfMN · 30/05/2022 14:54

Dreadful

As for naming your child after where they were conceived, just no Confused

Glitterspy · 30/05/2022 14:55

Plenty of people call their children dreadful names (I’m sure people think my daughter’s name is laughable, and I care not a jot)

What will the nickname be? Memph? Meme?

LibertineCapsAndCowboyChaps · 30/05/2022 15:08

If everybody did this with their kids then I'd be Volvo estate (British racing Green if you want to know the colour). Even worse it was my dads family car that him and his wife (at the time) used for carting their teenagers around 🤮. This story has honestly haunted me, I didn't want to bloody know the story of my conception.

Starbeach · 30/05/2022 16:16

Compared to some of the names suggested being used on here it's not awful. Not my cuppa but I wouldn't go omg why would you inflict that on your poor child.
