Memphis for boy?

im prepared for people to not like this name on mumsnet because most people stick to classics but I’m in love with this name for my little boy. I live in England but he was conceived in Memphis tennessee when we were away on holiday… I know it’s out there but i think it’s really unique and cool and I’ve always liked these kind of names anyway. To me it isn’t that odd because there is an actual meaning to why I’m using it. I’m aware it’s not everyone’s cup of tea but what’s everyone’s thoughts?

Plenty of people call their children dreadful names (I’m sure people think my daughter’s name is laughable, and I care not a jot)

What will the nickname be? Memph? Meme?

Elvis?

mumsiedarlingrevolta · 30/05/2022 14:36

yikes.

No child wants to be called after the place his parents had sex I am looking at you victoria beckham

I think it comes across as very "try hard to be cool and out there"

This. If I met someone called Memphis I’d think “wow poor guy what pretentious parents he has.” And when he’s a teen everyone will sing “Walking in Memphis” song at him.

Also what’s the nickname? Mem?

😕

Give your son a name that HE will love.

ChagSameachDoreen · 30/05/2022 17:16

Dreadful.

It's not a pleasant sound.

RaspberryChouxBuns · 30/05/2022 17:20

Your child is going to grow up and ask you the origins of his name, if he ever catches wind he was conceived in Memphis and he's called Memphis he'll be mortified. When he's an adult he'll put two and two together anyway. It's not the worst name ever, but it's not great.

SundayTeatime · 30/05/2022 18:28

No.

This!!! I'm all for unusual names but I'd hate to be called Memphis.

JemimaTiggywinkle · 30/05/2022 20:16

I wasn’t keen on Memphis anyway but the conception story just makes it worse. No-one wants to think about their conception.
Would you be planning on telling people/future DS this?

DancingUnderTheLights · 30/05/2022 20:17

I agree with another post that Tennessee is a nicer name but both out there and quite American. I don't dislike them but I do dislike the story you have attached to it. No child wants to know about their conception.

JeansAndJumper · 30/05/2022 20:23

I think it has potential to be misheard as Mavis.

If you must shoe horn where he was conceived into the equation then I agree with PP that Tennessee would be far, far nicer. More masculine and also more recognisable as a name not just a place.

Smartiepants79 · 30/05/2022 20:36

It’s the penguin from happy feet (took me ages to remember that!)

Regularmumnetter · 30/05/2022 20:36

Absolutely loved the name until the part about him being conceived there 😂

Ninananna · 30/05/2022 20:37

Please don't saddle a child with this truly dreadful, tacky name.

0utwitted · 30/05/2022 20:39

I vote no.

Bono daughter not son was Memphis Belle Eve and she goes by Eve

This is so true. My Dad used to think it was hilarious that I was conceived in the dirty duck in stratford upon avon. I hope it was at least a b&b and I wasn't conceived in the toilets.

PaddingtonBearStareAgain · 30/05/2022 20:42

Please don't

LaLaLouella · 30/05/2022 21:39

I was kind of ok with Memphis as a name until I heard the conception story, and now it's a definite No. Named after the place your parents had sex? As a teen I would have found that mortifying.

Crazycrazylady · 30/05/2022 21:57

I'd assume you were an Elvis fan😜

Luredbyapomegranate · 30/05/2022 22:20

FoggySpecs · 30/05/2022 14:38

I'm sorry it is utterly dreadful. You cannot saddle a child with something so monstrous because he was conceived there, I know you said you were prepared for people not to like it but you need to be practical and kinder to your child.

Yup you will come across as a late to the game low rent Victoria Beckham

Downmarket rather than out there. People will Make Assumptions, they shouldn’t, but they will.

Also no teenager wants to have to answer ‘because it’s where I was conceived’ every time they are asked why the hell they are called that, thus I suspect the answer will be ‘because my mum is fucking mental’

Use is as a middle name.

comealongponds · 30/05/2022 22:23

Why on earth would you name your child after the place you had sex? That’s really weird and very tacky. poor child doesn’t want to think about their parents shagging in Memphis or anywhere else, especially not every time they hear their name!

Crikeyalmighty · 30/05/2022 22:40

Reminds me in the early90s when I heard a mum calling to a brother and sister (around 3 and 4 ) 'Kylie-- Jason !!!

I'm snobby on names I admit -

Joystir59 · 30/05/2022 22:42

Glad I didn't get called Coventry

BackToWhereItAllBegan · 30/05/2022 22:44

I lived in Tennessee, Memphis is a dump, please don't name your child after that place!

WaitinginVain · 30/05/2022 22:49

I actually quite like it and also the suggestion of Tennessee.

Tiddlywinkly · 30/05/2022 22:50

Use it as a middle name if you must?

Tiddlywinkly · 30/05/2022 22:54

Perhaps I should have called my son Ibiza
