My husband and I have pretty much decided our baby boy will be Wilf. However, I made the mistake of reading some threads with opinions on the name and have read a lot of negative reactions to the name which has knocked our confidence with it! Can I ask for anybody with positive associations with the name to share them. I don’t need to hear the negative thoughts again! Thank you 😊

I love Wilf / Wilfred

violetbunny · 23/05/2022 01:59

What is the point of this thread? If you've already decided this is what you're calling your child, it doesn't matter what people comment as it will make no difference.

Butterfly44 · 23/05/2022 07:32

Asking for positive comments means you know negativity surrounds the name more

bloominglovelyorange · 23/05/2022 07:48

Wilf is a lovely name and won't raise any eyebrows in 2022 (apart from a few on mumsnet). Great choice

KangarooKenny · 23/05/2022 07:50

No, don’t do it. You have to imagine a teenager with the name.

itsgettingweird · 23/05/2022 07:52

There's a MNer with a son called called Wilf. She posts a lot about him.

He's an amazing chap who's faced such adversity and come through it all.

I always think of him when I hear the name and think of it positively.

It's a perfectly nice name. I think of Wilf Mott from Dr Who. He's one of my favourite characters.

My first thought too Smile

DarleneSnell · 23/05/2022 08:13

I think rather than our opinions - ask yourself (or DH actually!) would YOU want to go through life called Wilf?

Personally I'd choose Will. You never hear it on young kids, the 3 little Williams I know all go by the full version. Will is cool.

DuchesOfSausage · 23/05/2022 08:39

It's fine. I neither like it or dislike it. Would put Wilfred on the BC

DisforDarkChocolate · 23/05/2022 08:44

I have only ever know one Wilf and he was a great bloke. I love the name.

airrrrAIRRRRiELLLL · 23/05/2022 09:00

Reminds me of the focus in school. WILF: (What I'm Looking For)

It's nice apart from the Boris connection. Do you like Wolf/Wolfe/Wolfram? No connection to our leader with this is my thinking.

TooMuchBluey · 23/05/2022 09:17

I don't get all the negativity, especially when you've asked for positive comments. But I think it's a great name. Not sure why people think it won't suit a teenager/adult. All names grow with people in my opinion.

I'd choose Wilf for our second child if it went better with our surname.

Good luck OP and just go with Wilf and ignore the MN opinions. People are nicer in real life

pinklavenders · 23/05/2022 09:32

Why are you asking for positive comments? This won't eliminate the negative ones.

Choose the name YOU like!

SirSidneyRuffDiamond · 23/05/2022 09:44

I like the name and would use Wilfred on the birth certificate as I love the long form even more. Makes me think of strong, handsome young men from the early part of the 20th century.

Newtothis777 · 23/05/2022 09:44

I love Wilfred. Wish I’d used it tbh but might shorten it to Freddie . But also love wilf. Tbh in the age of hunter wolf etc you could choose a lot worse!

elfran · 23/05/2022 09:53

I absolutely love Wilfred and DD would have been that (or possibly Rafe) is she'd been a boy. The Boris connection did put us off a bit, and tbh it's a bit more popular than I'd have preferred (and much more so than the girl name DD got) but it's just lovely.

I don't understand the comment that it's nice on a baby but not beyond. I can absolutely see a teenage Wilf and an adult one!

I'll probably never use it now, as DD's name ends in a D and I think it would be too matchy for siblings (and I'm team full name). But you should definitely use it!

RustyBear · 23/05/2022 10:20

David & Georgia Tennant have a boy named Wilfred.

stargirl1701 · 23/05/2022 10:31

Wilf and Wilma...ORT reading scheme!

pinklavenders · 23/05/2022 10:38

David & Georgia Tennant have a boy named Wilfred.

How is that a positive comment? Or even a useful comment ConfusedGrin

Aorh · 23/05/2022 12:18

I love it.

It reminds me of a popular MNer’s lovely son from back in the day when the site was smaller and posters were more ‘known’ 😊.

His Mum is still here & we still get the occasional update. Haven't read one in a little while though (around Christmas!!) my brain is so full of FOG, I can't currently remember her current user 'name' 🤦🏻‍♀️

but that's who I immediately think of when I hear Wilf.

@user1467701718 it's a perfectly fine name, if you want to use it, then do. Personally so close to BJ having used it, I wouldn't.

StillUp · 23/05/2022 12:43

I know a gorgeous little Wilf and quite like it.

When we named DC2 we chose a name that we knew some wouldn’t like. It’s an old fashioned name that isn’t commonly used at the moment. It got mixed reactions from family, but we love it and we’re always going to use it regardless. A few days before she was born someone started a thread about the name on here and it got absolutely slated! We still loved the name, still used it, and have absolutely no regrets. Once she was here people were more polite - you can sometimes tell someone isn’t keen but it doesn’t bother us, and we’ve had some really positive reactions too. She suits it, and the family members that weren’t keen initially say they love it now and they couldn’t imagine her being anything else.

Honestly, if you’ve decided on it, use it without caring what others think. It’s not a made up name, it’s not an offensive name, once he’s here it will just be his name!

Luredbyapomegranate · 24/05/2022 00:07

I quite like it

But you must put Wilfred on the birth cert, partly for grown-up-ness, and party so he has the option of Fred

1963andbewildered · 24/05/2022 00:13

Any name connected to BJ would send me running! Name ok but BJ would ruin it for me ..sorry!

Cloud16 · 24/05/2022 00:35

I like the nn Will.

What about Wilbur?
