Hi, I would like to call my daughtr Venus (shortcut:Vee). Venus was the Roman goddess of love and beauty 😀Do you think it's good idea? I like also traditional Victoria 😀

Venus?

People will know it from Venus Williams, and there’s a marvellous woman right there, as well as the classical reference. I think it’s quite bold, but prefer it to Victoria. But then, she could be rather marvellous too.

toastofthetown · 22/04/2022 12:06

Very associated with Venus Williams - more so than the goddess. There's also a well known shaving brand Venus. It has been in very low but consistent use in England and Wales - so not completely off the wall - but the name has too much baggage for me to want to use.

UhtredsLatestPaganHussy · 22/04/2022 12:07

Yeah, I would imagine Venus Williams has made the name seem less out there. It's quite bold but bold can be good. Quite like it the more I ponder it.

I hope her birth is a dreamy and elegant as Botticelli's painting! Wink

Venus?

I think it's fab. Don't worry about it rhyming with Penis- it will be character building for her.

FayCarew · 22/04/2022 12:40

It doesn't rhyme with Penis.

FayCarew · 22/04/2022 12:40

It doesn't rhyme with Penis.

What's your accent? I think it does rhyme with penis for most people.

pizzaand · 22/04/2022 12:53

It does rhyme with penis - pee-nuhs is a pretty standard pronunciation (areas may vary) and vee-nuhs

I wouldn't associate Venus with Penis though

Schulte · 22/04/2022 12:54

Please don’t.

donquixotedelamancha · 22/04/2022 13:03

It doesn't rhyme with Penis.

Are you pronouncing penis to rhyme with Tennis?

If so, I think you are confused. I meant the male genitals, not the commendian's surname.

Moonshine160 · 22/04/2022 13:26

Yeah I’d just stick with Victoria .

emmathedilemma · 22/04/2022 14:01

I thought of the razors rather than Venus Williams so on that basis it's a no from me! Victoria is a very sound name.

FayCarew · 22/04/2022 14:09

My first thought was of the razors too.

There are other nice names starting with V if you want the nn Vee

Synchrony · 22/04/2022 14:52

I think it's bold but nice.

It does not rhyme with penis or tennis in my South UK accent at all. Penis clearly has an i sound and Venus has a u sound. No one I know would think of anything other than the goddess or Williams. What a ridiculous comment.

user3199 · 22/04/2022 15:08

Venus/Penis rhyme in my (Scottish) accent, but I wouldn't personally have thought of the link.

If you like V names - I know a Verity and a Vina (pronounced vine-a not vee-na).

Papergirl1968 · 22/04/2022 15:16

I was coming on here to say our rescue dog is called Venus and people do mishear that as Penis (Midlands accent).
What about Verity? I just read a book where the character Verity was abbreviated to Vee.

Lastsecondfail · 22/04/2022 15:21

Surely vina like that sounds like vagina??

How to lower the tone of a naming thread... well done mumsnetters Wink

user3199 · 22/04/2022 15:31

I've never made that association! 😂

Coastalcreeksider · 22/04/2022 15:46

I seem to remember a well known rugby song that began : "Twas on the good ship Venus..." I definitely recall it had the word penis in the last line.

I’m v much enjoying the genitalia chat

I wouldn’t OP, it’s a fab name in some ways but you’d have to be a big character, if she’s shy it will be awful. It’s also very much shout sex and love which will probably be annoying when she’s trying to be taken seriously at dental school. It is also the kind of name strippers and hookers adopt.

Athena, Diana, Persephone, Sabrina are all great goddess names and there are many more. Victoria is nice and underused, there is also Vivienne (Vivi), Vitoria (Vita), Viola, Verity..

Kanaloa · 22/04/2022 19:13

To me it does rhyme with penis - I understand Venus has a u while penis has an i but most people don’t pronounce it peeniisss and VeenUUHHSS. It’s said sort of as Veenis and peenis. The endings are similar.

I wouldn’t use it anyway because it’s a very out there name that I wouldn’t like to have myself. There are lots of V names that are nice. Viola, Victoria, Violet. And they’re all accepted names that would suit any type of girl.

donquixotedelamancha · 22/04/2022 19:17

That must be brilliant on the park: "Get down Venus, bad venus" "I'm so sorry my venus got overexcited and made your trousers dirty".

donquixotedelamancha · 22/04/2022 19:33

You are probably right. Kids famously don't like rhyming or saying smutty words. I think there is very little chance of 'Venus has a penis, Venus has a penis' following the child through school.

Papergirl1968 · 22/04/2022 20:03

More of a "what did you call that dog?!" 😄 @DonQuixote

DramaAlpaca · 22/04/2022 21:04

Hmmm. I'd choose Victoria.

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 22/04/2022 21:12

There's also the Frankie Avalon song, and Venus in Blue Jeans which are both nice songs.

It doesn't rhyme with penis at all for me!
