Alfie, Freddie or Charlie?

After much discussion I think these are our top 3 for our baby boy due later this year. We would likely put Alfred on the birth certificate for Alfie, either Alfred or Frederick for Freddie, I’m not keen on Charles but my husband would probably insist on it for Charlie on the BC.

I know they are all very popular/done a million times etc, but honestly we find boys names so, so hard.

So, of the three, which is your favourite? Thanks!

Alfie/ Alfred is definitely my favourite followed by Frederick/ Freddie

BOOTS52 · 21/04/2022 13:22

I love the name Alfie after hearing it on Peaky Blinders, Tom Hardy's character. Don't like Freddie and love Charlie for either a boy or a girl. Alfie not as common as the others.

Cocobeau · 21/04/2022 13:25

I like Freddie and the one Freddie I know is such a cute lad so it has nice connotations in my head. But if you like the shortened version of the name just put that on the BC. I don't see the need to put an extended version you don't intend on calling them.

BertieBotts · 21/04/2022 13:30

I love Alfred / Freddie. I think it's an unusual combination and a cute name.

toastofthetown · 21/04/2022 13:33

Alfie feels a touch dated to me. I prefer Frederick.

KirstenBlest · 21/04/2022 14:55

Charlie
but you could use Alfred and use either Alfie or Freddie

SunshiningBoo · 21/04/2022 15:05

My favourite is Charlie.

Mumofgirls2017 · 21/04/2022 15:24

Frederick/ Freddie!

itsgettingweird · 21/04/2022 15:26

I like all those names.

I've also heard Albie recently and love that too.

DockOTheBay · 21/04/2022 15:26

They're all nice :) I would maybe so for Alfred and then he can be either Alfie or Freddie!

itsgettingweird · 21/04/2022 15:26

I guess Albie could be shortened from Alberto?

DockOTheBay · 21/04/2022 15:29

Albie is really cute as suggested by PP. Short for Albert. Bertie is nice as well.

Firebird83 · 22/04/2022 12:58

Alfred and then either Alfie or Freddie

pearandsausage · 22/04/2022 13:01

Like you, my DH really wanted a longer name for the BC to give the DC options when they're older - didn't bother me but 🤷🏻‍♀️

I really don't like Charles but love Charlie so that was out for us - we went for Alfie (BC Alfred) and like that he can be Alf/Alfie/Fred/Freddie as he wishes when he's older. At the moment he's an Alf/Alfie and sometimes Alfred.

Happenchance · 22/04/2022 13:02

Alfred

AntarcticTern · 22/04/2022 13:02

Charlie is my favourite, followed by Freddie.

Iceddecaflatte · 22/04/2022 14:19

Out of the 3 Alfred/Alfie...

But as you said they are all so popular. I know a 2 year old Charlie and my DD has at nursery 2 Freddies. Also, just yesterday named her daughter Freddie.

Alfie is better in my opinion!

And in the BC Alfred gives options to both Alfie and Freddie.

user3199 · 22/04/2022 15:00

Frederick/Freddie/Fred is my favourite by far.

In a similar vein, I love Roderick/Roddy/Rod

Don't like Charles, Charlie is a bit meh.

Dislike Alfie.

But it's your son, choose whichever one you love!

JollyWilloughby · 22/04/2022 15:02

Freddie 💯 percent.

gingerhills · 22/04/2022 15:05

I love all three names.

I'd go for the full version on birth certificate - Alfred/Charles/Frederick.

I especially love Alfred as it can become Al, Alf, Alfie, Fred, Freddie, so it's really versatile.

itssquidstella · 22/04/2022 15:14

Freddie, then Charlie, then Alfie.

DramaAlpaca · 22/04/2022 20:53

Charlie of those three.

I don't like Alfie or Freddie at all, sorry.

maybein2022 · 22/04/2022 21:22

Thanks everyone. It’s so hard!

I think Freddie is the front runner, my choice would be Alfie but Freddie is the one my husband and other two kids prefer. If we did go with Freddie, do you think Alfred or Frederick? My worry with choosing Alfred if he’s going to be a Freddie is that to be it’s more a full name for Alfie, which is what I’d like, but Alfie and Freddie are very different names, so we’d really have to call him one or the other!

It sounds like you're planning to use full name only on birth certificate but to always use nickname in day to day life? In that case, if going for Freddie I'd choose Frederick rather than Alfred. I could be wrong but I imagine a little Freddie could also identify with being a Frederick as he grows older and may choose to use that name, at least in formal situations. Whereas I feel a child called Freddie wouldn't see Alfred as being their name in the same way. Not sure if I've explained that properly!

Ignoring the nicknames aspect I much prefer Frederick to Alfred, and prefer both to Charles.

ISpyCobraKai · 22/04/2022 21:56

Honestly, I don't like any, they're all twee, overdone and will date badly.
