I knew one at school but haven't heard it in years.
What do you think?¹ I love it but not sure if the name works today.

Hyphenated names are seen as a bit naff these days.

MurderAtTheBeautyPageant · 26/03/2022 23:21

Anne-Marie was a popular name in Ireland in the late 70s/early 80s. But I don't think I've ever met an Anna-Marie.

The hazard would be people thinking she was called Anne-Marie or Anna-Maria.

Capecodsummer · 26/03/2022 23:30

That should have read opinions. The girl I knew was from an Irish background. She was absolutely stunning and looked like one of the sisters from the band the Corrs. I haven't heard it other than that.

Hyphenated names are really commen now, as in awful not as in there are a lot. And soooo annoying for the child trying to spell it, and the teacher having to say both names all the time.

Cryingbutstilltrying · 26/03/2022 23:39

I knew an Anna-Marie at school. She was blonde and blue eyed, very petite and pretty, no Irish connection that I know of.
She went by Anna most of the time.
I think it’s a lovely name but can see lots of possibilities for getting it wrong. Depends if that’s a problem for you.

Rosemary2022 · 26/03/2022 23:57

I think it is beautiful

demoness · 27/03/2022 00:23

I'm Irish and I know a few Anne-Maries. Marie after the Virgin Mary and Anne because that's the name of her mother in Catholic tradition. I've heard of the Latinate Anna Maria too. I've never encountered Anna-Marie before though. I think it's nice but easily misheard as Anne-Marie.

FlyingIsEasy · 27/03/2022 00:41

Use Anne-Marie if you want hyphenated or she'll have a lifetime of correcting people.

Anna Marie is nice but as a first name and middle name.

PiratePetespajamas · 27/03/2022 09:25

I think pp are right that hyphenated names are naff - but this is one of the old school ones so I actually think it escapes that. Having said that, Anne-Marie is obviously the more usual form and I think she’ll get a lot of errors. I also think it’s a bit of a mouthful, although nicer than Annemarie. I’d just got for Anna, personally, which is lovely and not all that usual.

Sixpencenone · 27/03/2022 09:35

I think it's lovely.

Lurking9to5 · 27/03/2022 09:38

I'd find it hard to remember if it was anna maria or anna marie or anne maria.

Anne-Marie is the classic combo.

I prefer Anna, Anya or Marianne to Anne-Marie though

Rosemary2022 · 27/03/2022 09:56

I can see what others are saying in it being similar to other hyphenated names and people mixing them up. But I don't think I would let that worry me. I mean if you are going for something easy to remember just go with Child A (that is not the purpose of a given name).

If people say her name wrong she will I am sure be able to correct people - as we all do now with our own names.

Go with the name you like best!

Hyphens are just not good

I think they can work with some names though. I agree the -May/Mai/Mae/ -Rose/ -Grace names have been done to death, but I think something like Anna-Marie has a completely different vibe. Personally I love Anna-Marie. It's beautiful.
Luredbyapomegranate · 27/03/2022 15:34

It’s 70s retro but fine, just don’t use a hyphen

MissyB1 · 27/03/2022 15:37

I went to a Catholic school, we had a few Anne-Maries, lovely name. Anna - Marie is a bit awkward. Just go with Anne-Marie.

Phyllis321 · 27/03/2022 15:39

I like it

meringue33 · 27/03/2022 15:42

Anna-Maria is lovely, people will assume you’re very Catholic en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anna_Maria_Taigi

delshell · 27/03/2022 19:47

Very pretty name.

The only thing that would put me off is that it's the name of Samuel Whiskers' wife (as in the Beatrix Potter story). I doubt many people would know that so I'm sure it's nothing to worry about but I've read it to my daughter so many times that I don't think I could get the connection out of my head!!

Capecodsummer · 27/03/2022 20:06

I haven't read it but I just looked up the character 😃
It is such a pretty name.

I have a friend called Anne Marie. Known as Anna sometimes

Beautiful woman. Irish heritage.

Squashpocket · 27/03/2022 20:32

I don't think Anne-Marie falls in to the same category as some of the more recent hyphenated names (ones ending rose, rae or mae). It's more classic than that. I think it's lovely.

alexdgr8 · 27/03/2022 20:37

Anne-Marie is much better

CoffeeWithCheese · 28/03/2022 07:43

I was at school with lots of Anne-Maries in the 1980s. Also know an Anna-Marie and I find that doesn't roll off the tongue in quite the same way in comparison - it always sounds slightly awkward to say - even when the lady named it says it herself.

Openmuddyfields · 28/03/2022 07:46

Haven’t a clue why saying ‘Anna Marie’ is any more annoying than Nathaniel or similar.

Unfortunately the only Anna Marie I know (of) is Fred wests daughter but I doubt anyone would make this association. I think Anna is lovely on its own.
