It sounds a bit like 'arry.
What's the origin of the name?

Easymeasy · 20/03/2022 14:03

I really like it.

Marvellousmadness · 20/03/2022 14:07

Considering ariana grande's Nickname is ari. I wouldn't choose ari for a boy. As when I hear the name i think:girl

Ari is also an old fashioned dutch man name btw

Fallulah · 20/03/2022 14:11

Like the guy from New Zealand in Home and Away? (Think his is short for Ariki.)

Easymeasy · 20/03/2022 14:14

Ari is pronounced differently to Arry.

moocow1234567 · 20/03/2022 14:18

Love it

MadameFantabulosa · 20/03/2022 14:19

It’s quite common in Israel.

Yellowbeeblueflower · 20/03/2022 14:30

Thank you all. We would like it pronounced like Harry but without the H! It’s a popular name where we come from and we are only worried if it will be an ok name in the Uk!

I know one. 99% of people seem to think he's called Harry though.

I would have thought most people would pronounce is Ah-ree If its pronounced Arry I take back what I said about liking it.
Kite22 · 20/03/2022 14:42

I know one. He gets very fed up with the fact 99% of people think he is called Harry and they just didn't catch the 'H' being pronounced.

Coffeencrochet · 20/03/2022 14:44

Ari is the shortener version of my name, pronounced the same as Ariana's. I wouldn't go for it if you're going to pronounce it like Harry, especially in the UK where it'll definitely be mistaken for that.

Caspianberg · 20/03/2022 14:49

Alone or short for something?

The Ari I know is actually Aristotle (Greek family), and pronounced ah-ree

Yellowbeeblueflower · 20/03/2022 15:03

Sorry but after your replies I am confused…

  1. It will be a short of something like Aristotelis
  1. It will be pronounced as A-ree but with the stress at the A rather than the ree.

What do you all think now?

OP posts:
Yellowbeeblueflower · 20/03/2022 17:49

Any opinions please?

So our plan is to name him Ari and call him Ah-ree with the stresss at the A!

Would that be ok and make sense in the Uk or does it sound weird/made up?

Any opinions would be much appreciated, thanks all :-)

I prefer Telly to Ari (although that’s only relevant if you’re actually going for Aristotelis!)

I think Aris is better than Ari because it sounds less like you’re just saying Harry in a cockney accent.

A580Hojas · 20/03/2022 17:58

I love this name. The Ari I know is 50+ and from Brazil. It is pronounced exactly like Harry without the H.

A580Hojas · 20/03/2022 17:58

@Easymeasy

Ari is pronounced differently to Arry.
Not the Ari I know.
SmellyOldOwls · 20/03/2022 17:58

It's a Jewish name isn't it? Definitely go for it, if you're Jewish.

SpinningTheSeedsOfLove · 20/03/2022 18:04

I'm familiar with it as an Israeli name, as pp said. (אריה/ארי)

Ari is short for Ariel, as in Ariel Sharon (the 'Sharon' having the stress on the 2nd syllable also).

Yellowbeeblueflower · 20/03/2022 18:32

Not we are not Jewish but it’s a common name in the country we come from!

It’s a short name of a name similar to Aristotelis, but it’s not Aristotelis (so Telis wouldn’t work)…

I just thought that it would be an easy 3 letter name for British people.

Does the pronounciation “Ah-ree” (with strain in the first syllable “A”) sound right in the Uk for Ari?

OP posts:
jimpamdwight · 20/03/2022 18:34

Yea I agree to me it's a Jewish name shortening of Ariel, it was a contender for us

Yellowbeeblueflower · 20/03/2022 19:23

Thanks all, by the way and out of curiosity how is Arry pronounced? Is it Ar-ray?

Our Ari will be Ah-ree. Is it a sensible/most commonly expected pronounciation?

Aerielview · 20/03/2022 19:33

Sounds lovely

GlamGiraffe · 20/03/2022 19:37

Ariel is a boys name (Hebrew origin). Its usually shortened to Ari IME. Its a perfectly normal boys name to me living in London so i wouldnt give it a second thought.
