Our son is called Ari (pronounced Ah-ree). It’s short for Arieh which mean lion. He definitely lives up to his name! We are Jewish and have many friends named Ari.

Kite22 · 20/03/2022 20:13

Thanks all, by the way and out of curiosity how is Arry pronounced? Is it Ar-ray?

No, Harry, like Prince Harry.
The 'a' sound is like at the beginning of apple or the middle of cat, then 'ree' like 'tree' without the 't'

Our Ari will be Ah-ree. Is it a sensible/most commonly expected pronounciation?

Seeing 'ah' makes me make the noise the doctor asks for when looking down your throat...... to rhyme with car /bar/far/ etc

I live in a really multicultural city and it isn't an uncommon name, and of course isn't difficult to say, once you know, but the one I knew quite well told me EVERYONE thinks he is called 'Harry' and just not saying the 'h' loudly.

Wallabyone · 20/03/2022 20:18

Are you Greek/Cypriot? I know several Greek men named Ari-one is short for Aristos, and he is like Harry without the H.

It's fine in the UK, just decide which way you want to go with and he will learn to correct people if they get it wrong.

One of my children has a name that ends 'ine' and even as a toddler he will mention it if people go with 'een' instead of 'igh-n' (both are correct, just different!)

Luredbyapomegranate · 20/03/2022 20:27

It’s ok
But -
In the UK it will be said Arry - Ah-ri - like Harry without the H
People will often mishear it as Harry
It sounds unisex (became Arianne, Aria etc) - not that that’s a bad thing

Jamoffmytoast · 20/03/2022 20:30

It's okay but people will keep asking him if it's Harry

tearinghairout · 20/03/2022 20:35

I like it. I really love Ariel.

Yellowbeeblueflower · 20/03/2022 20:55

Thanks all!

Yes, the pronunciation we want is like Harry without the H! Thanks for confirming that this will be the case.

We want it to sound like a (like apple) and ri (like tree), as someone said above. With the stress at the a!

I appreciate that people will think it’s Harry. Harry is a lovely name and don’t mind people thinking he is a Harry! He can always correct them of course.

As for Ariel, I didn’t know it’s a boy’s name. I only know Ariel the mermaid Grin

I know a couple of Ari’s, one Jewish one of Dutch descent. Not sure if I’ve got the pronunciation right but I’ve always pronounced them Ar-ri.

RebeccaCloud9 · 20/03/2022 22:43

You've really confused me now, you were saying you wanted it pronounced ah Ree, now you're saying arry.

I would think ah(rhymes with car) Ree when I read the name (like this name, but v associated with Ariana Grande now).
As pps have said, 'arry sounds like a cockney saying prince harry. I don't like this version.

BillyAndTheSillies · 20/03/2022 22:46

It was my first choice for DS2. Until my mum said "what? Harry?" And it went back and forth a lot - but my accent has dropped H's.

We went for Eden in the end. I still wish we had an Ari.

BeanStew22 · 20/03/2022 22:47

@MadameFantabulosa

It’s quite common in Israel.
Great name, I would definitely think Jewish family
Yellowbeeblueflower · 20/03/2022 23:03

@RebeccaCloud9 apologies!!

I want it to be pronounced as a(apple)-ree(tree)!

I feel this is the way that Harry is pronounced too? So, Ha-ree?

You mean that you don’t like this way, right?

How do you like it and how do you think people will pronounce Ari if they see it written?

OP posts:
Calandor · 20/03/2022 23:29

Honestly I'd think you were saying 'arry aka Harry. Not bad if you don't mind people thinking you don't say your Hs

Calandor · 20/03/2022 23:30

Ah-ree would work fine I think

Pyewhacket · 20/03/2022 23:32

Prince Ari Smile

colouringfoxes · 20/03/2022 23:35
Nico (German singer) had a son called Ari, I've always thought it was a lovely name
hampsteadmum · 20/03/2022 23:46

Very common among Greek, Cypriot and Jewish families. Onassis was called "Ari" and plenty of Jewish kids too. No one would bat an eyelid in London. It will be pronounced as you want to (more or less).

Fivebeanchilli · 20/03/2022 23:58

I know several - all pronounced as you pronounce it. They are all Jewish - they're adults so I've no idea if they have a longer name as well.
I like it.
I've never thought of them as Harry without the H but I suppose it's easier living in a multicultural city.
Go for it. It's a nice name.

Caspianberg · 21/03/2022 06:35

Ari = ah- ree to everyone I know

Arry = isn’t a Aah sound like a in apple, it’s more ar like ‘carry’. So Harry is ‘ha-rry’ not ‘Hah-ree’

Yellowbeeblueflower · 21/03/2022 06:59

Oh ok, interesting! Thanks @Caspianberg!

I am not native English and in my ears “carry”, “Harry”, “apple”, “car”, “marry”, “bar” etc. all sound the same way with a short “a”!

I never elongate the “a” to make it “ah” to be honest… So, good to know Grin

Calandor · 21/03/2022 09:53

Car and bar have long ahh sounds in the UK, though the others all sounds the same pretty much 😁

Yellowbeeblueflower · 21/03/2022 10:18

I see! So, our plan is to use the short A for Ari.

And then the stress to be in A.

I hope it will be a straightforward pronunciation/name. Fingers crossed!

My immediate thought was Ari Haswari from NCIS. I really like it personally.

Flyingteaspoon · 21/03/2022 22:30

Very common Israeli name as PPs have said. I do wonder in the UK if people will think he’s called Harry and is just not pronouncing the H? With a London or Yorkshire accent, Harry often comes out sounding like Arry/Ari? I like the name but wonder if he’s going to be forever saying “ No, Ari, not Harry “.

Pandypuff · 22/03/2022 04:13

I love Ah-ree (with the 'ar' sound to rhyme with 'car'). It's a Hebrew name meaning 'lion'.

If it's pronounced like 'Arry, however, I hate it!
