Thoughts on the name Opal?

Also, any middle name suggestions?

I love it

It's nice but it also makes you think of the car. It is for sure of the gemstone names that isn't common such as Ruby

Purpleavocado · 16/03/2022 22:28

Opal fruit?

Interesting - I'd never heard of the car, but I've just quickly googled it and looks like it's spelt Opel.

Opal fruit?
Love Opal Fruits! Probably a bit too much of a retro reference to worry about though?

Is Opal a female or a male name?

Blueberryflavour · 17/03/2022 09:15

My gran always said that opal’s brought bad luck to the wearer, it’s quite a common belief where she was born.

LemonsLimes · 17/03/2022 09:20

Nice

8stone13 · 17/03/2022 09:26

Love it. I'm of the Opal Fruits generation (as opposed to Starburst or whatever they were re-named as) but I wouldn't make that association.

I would have thought this generation's association would be the Jacqueline Wilson character Opal Plumstead. I think she becomes a suffragette though, so all good there 😀

Lovely name OP - go for it 🙂

TabithaTittlemouse · 17/03/2022 09:27

I know one who has a sister named Emerald, it’s a bit much.

Opal’s are actually good luck although if your Gran was religious @Blueberryflavour it may be due to the fact that opals are thought to be quite seductive!

WhatsWithAllTheCarrots · 17/03/2022 09:37

Love it! Ooo soome great baby names popping up on MN today!

emmalouisehodson · 17/03/2022 09:55

I like it.
I wouldn't have thought of opal fruits, despite my partner laughing at me as I still call them that.

I think it's cute and would benefit from a longer middle name. I liked a suggestion above (changed a bit): Opal Seraphine. It depends on your surname though, as to whether that would still flow nicely

Blueberryflavour · 17/03/2022 10:18

@TabithaTittlemouse
That’s interesting she was raised in a devout family.

beetree1 · 17/03/2022 10:21

I love the name Opal! Its on my list for a middle name spot if we have a girl. Sadly can't use as a first as our surname is one syllable as well and I don't feel like it sounds right :(

PoleFairy · 17/03/2022 10:25

I love Opal. Olivia and Ophelia are both fairly popular at the moment and as Opal starts with the same O sound I think it feels quite familiar to people whilst still being unusual.

Blackopal · 17/03/2022 10:27

I love it! Am jealous I don't have a child with this name.
I work with gemstones, opals are my favourite as you can see from my username!

The history of the stone is gorgeous, at one point they were thought to lightening strikes trapped on earth, also thought to be a magic stone that held the power of all other stones.

The bad luck thing comes from Sir Walters Scott's book where it seems like the heroine dies in connection to an opal hair pin she wears (but is really poisoned)

MurderAtTheBeautyPageant · 17/03/2022 18:26

I always think opals look a bit nafftastic. Not into the name either.

cigarettesNalcohol · 17/03/2022 18:33

Nope. Makes me thing of some product one used to clean contact lenses. Sorry.

FlamingoDust · 18/03/2022 10:59

Gemstone names tend to sound a bit tawdry to me. Aspirational sex worker - Ruby, Pearl, Opal.

The one I quite like is Topaz - doesn't have those associations.

BlueFlavour · 18/03/2022 17:24

I love unusual gemstone names. Opal, Emerald, Sapphire and Topaz. All beautiful.
Opal Valentina?

For me, Ruby and Pearl are ladies born 1920s, absolutely loads at one time. Topaz is OK but for some reason much more out there and a bit deliberately different. Opal is lovely and would go with loads of middle names.
MurderAtTheBeautyPageant · 18/03/2022 17:39

I feel like I read a book with an upper class flapper girl character called Topaz. Could be imagining it...
