Emme as a full name

I love Emme/Emmie/Emmy but can't use the longer versions of the name (eg Emily/Emilia) because I have family/friends that have used them and I am not keen on the other options.

I'm considering using Emme as a full name as I think the Emmie and Emmy look too nickname. What do you think?

I have slight concerns that people might pronounce Emme as "Em".

It looks like a spelling mistake for Emma.

CakesOfVersailles · 15/03/2022 08:05

If I saw it written down I would probably pronounce it 'em' or think it was a typo for 'Emma.'

Sirzy · 15/03/2022 08:06

I think especially when handwritten by many it would be read as Emma

Hodehodeho · 15/03/2022 08:06

It’s the nickname for Emmeline not Emily

babyjellyfish · 15/03/2022 08:06

I agree it looks like a typo.

What about Emmeline?

Hodehodeho · 15/03/2022 08:07

Emmeline is beautiful (pronounced Emma-Leen)

Ff10n · 15/03/2022 08:09

I think many would pronounce it wrong. I would hesitate and probably have to ask.

I also think it will get written / read wrong a lot. People who see it written down will assume that the last e is a malformed a and that the name is Emma.

You haven't mentioned the latter as an option. Then you could use the Emmie nickname you love but still have a proper, well known (but not now that common) name behind it. I really like Emma and there aren't very many born any more.

Waitingwaiting3 · 15/03/2022 08:11

I think you could choose any “Em” name to name it a nickname for. Or even, if you were pushing it, one with “em” in it?
Emelia, Emmeline, maybe even Clementine at a push?!

I think Emmy is better than Emme though. Less confusion!

NewtoHolland · 15/03/2022 08:15

Emme looks like a typo, sorry.

SoupDragon · 15/03/2022 08:19

I also think Emme looks like a typo. I wouldn't automatically pronounce it as Emmy either.

SavoyCabbage · 15/03/2022 08:22

I'd definitely say Em.

I do supply teaching and I try really hard with names. I ask the TA if there is one or a child if there isn't to help me with any names I don't think I can pronounce properly before I do the register. I wouldn't ask about Emme as I would assume it was Em.

Zillamop · 15/03/2022 08:32

I have slight concerns that people might pronounce Emme as "Em".

How is it meant to be pronounced?

loulou2021 · 15/03/2022 08:35

Thanks everyone. I think that's a resounding "no" to Emme. I'm so glad I asked for opinions!!

Do you think Emmie and Emmy are too nickname to be a full name? I could consider Emmeline again but I think this is a bit long and fussy for me. I'm on the fence about Emma - is it a bit dated?

@Zillamop

I have slight concerns that people might pronounce Emme as "Em".

How is it meant to be pronounced?

I’m wondering that too
loulou2021 · 15/03/2022 08:37

@Zillamop the Emme I've heard of before is pronounced "Emmy"

JudyGemstone · 15/03/2022 08:40

I don’t think Emma is dated - it’s classic and a lovely name.

ISmellBurnings · 15/03/2022 08:42

Emma isn’t dated. I’ve heard a few little Emma’s recently, DS has one in his class at primary school.

It also makes a change from all the Evie/Isla/Ava’s that are everywhere.

Personally I would go with Emmeline for the sake of having a grown up sounding name to write on a CV, but use Emmie for day-to-day. You can just introduce her to everyone as Emmie.

FanGurlll · 15/03/2022 08:44

Emmie is fine as a stand alone name. Go for it!

PatSpringleaf · 15/03/2022 08:44

Emma is a lovely name, it's not dated.

If not, I think Emmie is lovely as a name too, it's not too nicknamey.

patritus · 15/03/2022 08:47

Just go for Emmie.
It's lovely and can't be mispronounced

RosiePosieDozy · 15/03/2022 08:48

I would go for Emmie if I was you. I've known three Emmies (full name Emmie) and they haven't seemed to have a problem with their name!

AnnaMagnani · 15/03/2022 08:55

My DM has a name ending in -e where you are supposed to sound the -e (Scandinavian) as do I.

In hospital, rather than ask her how to pronounce her name, every single person just says it wrong. Without sounding the -e her name sounds v stupid in English, as well as not being her name. I have the same issue but mine is still a nice name either way.

I'd be 100% confident that Emme would be said correctly in school, where people make a lot of effort, and sadly as Em for the rest of her life as soon as she leaves.

Emmie and Emmy are lovely so I'd pick the one you like best.

mnetting · 15/03/2022 08:59

I don't like it in it's own. I like Emma or if you can't use it how about Ella or Ellie.

loulou2021 · 15/03/2022 09:14

Thank you everyone for all of your opinions and insights. Definitely some stuff for me to mull over. Got another 13 weeks to go yet, so plenty of time for me to continue to change my mind!
