Girls name- classic but not “try hard”

Looking for inspiration! I am soooooo fussy about names and have read pages of threads here. I would a name that is classic, that most people would have heard of/ know how to spell, but is not popular. I reeeeally don’t like the current trend for very frilly/ over the top sounding names (sorry, just an opinion!)

I like:
Rosalind, Susannah, Alexandra (maybe a bit too popular), Juliet,

Dislike: Ottilie, Amelie, Freya, Ophelia, Verity, the whole Ada/Eva, Ivy Evelyn set etc

Margot, Clara etc becoming too popular

Don’t like too complex names like Arabella, Genevieve,

So if there is anyone left I haven’t offended would be great to hear your thoughts! 🙈

I adore Juliet! Don't mind Rosalind or Alexandra. Susannah is not my taste at all.

Rosemary
Leah
Valerie
Hannah (I think it has become more uncommon?)

I have a Miranda. I think it's classic, elegant and I've only known a couple of others.

@Cinnabomb

Thanks everyone, a real mix of answers here.

I sort of like Lucinda, Jemima, Felicity but they don’t feel quite natural to me, slightly out of my comfort zone.

Celeste/ Cecilia etc not my vibe.

I love Belinda but have heard a lot mixed opinions on here for it! Like Josephine.

Victoria, Harriet, Joanna are family names so couldn’t use them.

Rose, Grace, Georgina etc too popular for me.

Hmm ...
How about:

"Really like Diana but is it useable? It’s such an iconic name I’m not sure anyone would think of anyone else other than Princess Di?"

It's fine. Princess Diana died nearly 25 years ago and if she were still alive, she'd be 60 now. Your daughter's contemporaries aren't really going to register the connection too much- she was iconic to us as all over the TV and papers all the time, she'll be just a pretty lady in old pictures from the 80s to them. It's a nice name- elegant and not too fussy.

Rosalind is gorgeous.

I have a little Sylvia which might suit your list.

Andoffwego · 08/03/2022 18:57

Louisa (classic but underused)
Agnes
Dinah
Marilyn
Laura
Lydia

From your list, I would say go with Alexandra. It’s not a name I particularly like but I do think it’s a lovely classic name that hasn’t been popular for a long time.

MindatWork · 08/03/2022 19:00

Eliza?

devildeepbluesea · 08/03/2022 19:01

DD is Rosa. Unusual but not strange, everyone comments on what a lovely name it is.

But then again I’d be quite happy if you didn’t use it and it stayed just that little bit less usual 😉

@beverleybass

Katherine, like Elizabeth, is a bit too popular for my liking.

Only 73 Katherines last year doesn’t even make the top 500

@beverleybass

Sure, but add in
150 Katies
102 Catherines
47 Kates
45 Kathleens
31 Katerinas
23 Kathryns
13 Katys
11 Caterinas

And a billion other spellings and also-rans

Having said that, you can get some familiar names which are currently around or outside the top 1000.

Anne
Bridget
Vivian
Kimberley
Claire
Adela
Sandra
Irene
Fiona
Rhiannon
Christine
Jacqueline
Teresa
Nadine
Laurie
Delphine
Jane
Birdie
Clarissa
Marianne
Sally
Tania
Demelza

If in doubt go Dickens or Shakespeare
Belinda, Belle, Estella, Henrietta, Nancy, Rosa, Lavinia, Dora, Camilla
Eleanor, Elizabeth, Hermione, Maria, Iris, Juliet, Rosalind, Viola, Silvia, Miranda, Portia

What about Marceline?

Maiyakat · 08/03/2022 19:17
