Too unusual?

Hi all,
I have recently taken a liking to unusual baby names. My family don't take the same view as me so I was just wondering about the thoughts on the names: Meadow, Alabama & Noelle?
I know they're unusual but I can't stand seeing the same baby names used over and over, want to have something more unique but not sure if I've gone too far 🙈

Not keen on Alabama but not because it's a place I just don't like the sound of it. Tbh the other too aren't that unique but again perfectly good names and not common Smile

Lurking9to5 · 03/03/2022 00:34

I like Meadow and Noelle but not Alabama.
It sounds like less forward thinking state. I could be being v unfair to it. But no, as a name, eugh.

MarmiteCoriander · 03/03/2022 00:37

I know a 12yr old Noelle- not born in December and I like it. Also like Meadow, but prefer Summer, Skye, Skyler, Verda, Fairuza, Brooke etc.

Don't like Alabama as a name at all though.

PleaseSendNoodles · 03/03/2022 00:40

I lived in Mississippi for a while and they used to say ‘thank god for Alabama’ as it was the only state that did worse in education, health and other key areas. Although they’re pretty much tied for being equally backwards and impoverished. Please don’t name your child that. @Lurking9to5 you are spot on with your much kinder definition.

Meadow is very pretty and Noelle is classic but does make me think of Christmas 🎄

Luckingfovely · 03/03/2022 00:44

Not Alabama for reasons above, Noelle only for a Christmas baby, Meadow best for a summer baby.

I also like 'out there' names, but I just don't think that these are very good choices. Keep looking!

moll14 · 03/03/2022 00:51

Thanks guys! The only thing with Alabama that I really loved was that I'm a Quentin Tarantino fan and one of his characters is called Alabama. I'm also a fan of Melody, Evora and Suki. I agree Noelle would have to be a winter baby I think!

OP posts:
MarmiteCoriander · 03/03/2022 01:10

Noelle might be born in winter it the Northern hemishpere, but what if they then move to New Zealand or South Africa? Do you only name an Avril in April? I don't think a Noelle needs to be born in winter or near Christmas. The one I know was born in March.

Some other ideas:
Avalon
Jovi
Coralie
Ferne

CakesOfVersailles · 03/03/2022 01:18

Noelle is ok, I'm not keen on Meadow or Alabama.

CakesOfVersailles · 03/03/2022 01:19

@MarmiteCoriander They will still be born near Christmas if they move hemispheres, which is what Noelle refers to.

Kanaloa · 03/03/2022 01:25

If you like the name Meadow or Alabama change YOUR name to Meadow or Alabama. You might be sick of hearing ‘the same old baby names’ but I’m sure your child will be sick of hearing the same old boring comments about the silly name she’s been stuck with.

That’s the thing so many people don’t seem to get. You’re not the one who is getting something ‘unique’ if you name your child Alabama. They’re the ones getting something ‘unique’ and not really in a good way. Same with Suki, unless you’re Japanese I don’t think it works.

Noelle is a fine name.

I agree, but the OP said I agree Noelle would have to be a winter baby I think!

Cookingutensil · 03/03/2022 02:00

Don't call your child Alabama if you know nothing about Alabama. It's just inexcusable to give your child a name which carries huge significance based on a character in a film. Just Google it for goodness sake, if it resonates deeply, go ahead, otherwise its just ignorance, sorry.

Bluesparkled · 03/03/2022 02:29

I like Suki and think Meadow is pretty and Noëlle also. Not too sure about the others.

hauntedbillybass · 03/03/2022 05:52

Nooo. Meadow Soprano is the most unlikeable character in the history of television.

MadameFantabulosa · 03/03/2022 05:54

I don’t think Noelle is that “out there.” Instead of Alabama, how about Atalanta?

PinkSyCo · 03/03/2022 06:12

Alabama is awful, and when I say awful I mean really really awful. Hideous in fact. Meadow is a bit hippy twee and Noelle is ugly.

KidneyBeans · 03/03/2022 06:13

Alabama is ugly

She'll likely have 'sweet home Alabama' sung at her and people will assume her parents are rednecks.
Just no.

Meadow and Noelle are fine.

MartinMartinMarti · 03/03/2022 06:14

Alabama is honestly the worst name I can remember seeing on MN.

Allthesefolks · 03/03/2022 06:16

Noelle is a fine name.

Suki is a shortening of Susannah/Susan, I know several adult non-Japanese Suki’s.
FridayiminlovewithRobertSmith · 03/03/2022 06:25

Melody, Meadow, Suki and Noelle (I know a Noella which I actually slightly prefer) are good names. I don’t think they’re particularly out there.

I disagree about names being seasonal or only using Suki if you’re Japanese.

Agree with everyone else on Alabama.

PrinceParry · 03/03/2022 06:26

I know a Suki. She's very cool.

PrinceParry · 03/03/2022 06:27

The Suki I know is not Japanese!

LizzieBet14 · 03/03/2022 06:32

How about Alba instead?
I once knew an Atlanta (middle name Georgia!) but it's much nicer than Alabama.....

devildeepbluesea · 03/03/2022 06:34

Alabama is a shocker of a name to saddle someone with.

I know a dog called Meadow.

Noelle is lovely.

NotMaryWhitehouse · 03/03/2022 06:35

I'm with you @Kanaloa !
