Thoughts on the name Gregory?

I’ve just found out I’m having another boy and it’s our top contender. I really love it, I love the way it sounds, and it’s a name with a bit of significance for us. His brother is called Edward and I think the names go quite well together. I’m not particular keen on Greg but I don’t hate it, and I like Rory as a nickname.

But, I’m slightly worried it’s dated - I only know one Gregory under 35. What do people think?

Nice name. Unusual but not out there. I know a 20 year old Greg and he is very cool.

twilightcafe · 25/02/2022 11:28

Never considered it until now, but I like the name a lot.
Greg or Gregory is a name that will grow with your son.
And it's impossible to mis-spell!

PurBal · 25/02/2022 11:29

Love it

HelenaJustina · 25/02/2022 11:29

I like it. We considered Adam which I think has a similar slightly-dated feel but not too out there.

TabbyM · 25/02/2022 11:32

Why not Gregor?

emmathedilemma · 25/02/2022 11:42

I quite it like it but i think i prefer Gregor. I wouldn't think of Rory as a nn from Gregory though. Why don't you just call him Rory?

Ilovegregory · 25/02/2022 11:46

I do like Gregor, and Rory, but I don’t like either as much as Gregory.

I always think it’s wise to anticipate any possible nickname in case there’s one you really loathe!

Gregory is lovely! Gregor doesn't do it for me, too.... too something? I don't know what but it's "too" something 🤣

GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal · 25/02/2022 11:54

It's not a name that would have occurred to me, but I actually really like it now you've mentioned it! It feels traditional but somehow fresh.

MinglingFlamingo · 25/02/2022 11:55

Same not a name that I would have considered but I really like it

RedCandyApple · 25/02/2022 11:56

I’m surprised so many like it, it’s my dads name and I’ve always considered it to be a very ugly sounding name, sorry!

minipie · 25/02/2022 11:57

I really like it. But he will end up Greg rather than Rory. If you want Rory call him Rory (also a lovely name).

bitchinofhitchen · 25/02/2022 12:15

Gregory was my imaginary friends name when I was a child. He was brilliant - braver and naughtier than me.

Great name

Lemonweightloss · 25/02/2022 12:18

I love it.
I have a Dominic and if I'd had any more, I'd have had Michael, Vincent, Gregory type names. ( All 7 letters, strangely!)

urrrgh46 · 25/02/2022 12:23

Love it! My Gregory turns 18 in May. He is Greg most of the time.

urrrgh46 · 25/02/2022 12:24

And yeah he's cool! Long ringlet hair & the nicest person you'll meet.

MrsBertBibby · 25/02/2022 12:25

My very first crush was on a French boy called Gregory. He had eyes like Bambi, and when my French friends said his name I melted. He was so pretty!

Not quite the same in a British accent, but a very good name.

ukborn · 25/02/2022 12:32

Ooo I knew a few Gregs growing up (and of course Greg Brady, please don't tell me you don't know who he is...which also dates it, but that's not a bad thing). It will be Greg though, never heard of it shortened to Rory.

RuthW · 25/02/2022 12:48

Lovely name but if you don't like Greg don't bother.

Ilovegregory · 25/02/2022 13:11

Interesting that people think he would definitely end up being called Greg. I know quite a few people who are always their full name despite an obvious shortening… trouble is it’s out of your control once they’re not a little kid I suppose!

Gregory/Greg is lovely

babyjellyfish · 25/02/2022 13:24

I like it.

SeanChailleach · 25/02/2022 17:34

Lovely name.

Luredbyapomegranate · 25/02/2022 18:20

I like it. It is a 50s to 70s name, but don’t think it was ever popular enough to be called dated, and it’s a classic with a long history.

However, don’t give it if you don’t like Greg - because there’s a high chance he’ll end up a Greg

RainbowMum11 · 25/02/2022 18:39

It was one of my favourite choices for a boy (family connection) but XH vetoed it as it's a surname on his side, but we had girls anyway.
