Thoughts on the name Gregory?

I’ve just found out I’m having another boy and it’s our top contender. I really love it, I love the way it sounds, and it’s a name with a bit of significance for us. His brother is called Edward and I think the names go quite well together. I’m not particular keen on Greg but I don’t hate it, and I like Rory as a nickname.

But, I’m slightly worried it’s dated - I only know one Gregory under 35. What do people think?

I don't dislike it, though I prefer Gregor. Greg is not to my taste at all though, so that rules out any Greg- name for me.

Love Gregory, I tried really hard to persuade DH towards it for our two boys (unsuccessfully!)

We have an Edward too Smile

TobyMory · 25/02/2022 18:50

I know 3 Gregory’s all around age 10-13. All known aa Greg mind you.

SeigneurLapindeGrantham · 25/02/2022 18:51

I love it and it makes a change from George. Also I have fond memories of seeing Gregory's Girl at the cinema back in the day with John Gordon Sinclair and Clare Grogan of Altered Images.

I really like it. I think it works all the way through, from small boy to adult to old man. Lovely name. I like Greg as a nn though.

KirstenBlest · 25/02/2022 18:58

I only know two Gregorys. One is Greg, the other wasn't Greg until he was an adult. I have a thing for Gregory Peck, and Greg, Dame Emma's DH is easy on the eye.

Rory as a nn is a bit of a stretch

villamariavintrapp · 25/02/2022 19:02

I like it, but agree it won't be shortened to Rory-mostly because i think Rory's so popular there'll be lots of them, so wouldn't make sense to call a Gregory such a common name!

dontblamemee · 25/02/2022 19:21

A good friends brother is Gregory. He's Greg mostly but she calls him Greggy. I mean he's a fully grown man but it really suits him 😂😂

OrionsAccessory · 25/02/2022 19:24

It’s my husbands name but he goes by Greg. Unfortunately his mum hates the name Greg and winces every time she hears it! No idea why she chose a name with such an obvious shortened form that she loathes!

Mrstwiddle · 25/02/2022 19:24

I’ve met lots of Greg’s but never a Gregory, it will almost certainly be shortened. I like it.

SirVixofVixHall · 25/02/2022 19:27

I love it ! I would like to meet a baby Gregory. Rory v nice as a pet name too.

StopFeckingFaffing · 25/02/2022 19:28

I like it a lot and Greg is perfect for when he gets a bit older

I do think you need to accept that it will very likely get shortened to Greg at some point though

SirVixofVixHall · 25/02/2022 19:28

By pet name I mean the short nickname, not an actual pet, eg dog !! Grin

Sadandfedup2 · 25/02/2022 19:32

Like the name, but I don't think it flows very well with Edward, and I can't really explain why!

Ilovegregory · 25/02/2022 20:26

Thanks all! Glad to hear my fears that it is dated don’t seem to be widely shared. Now I just need to decide how I feel about it definitely becoming Greg as everyone seems to agree on that!

Personally I wouldn’t want a potential Greg and potential Ed. They sound to similar to me , not sure why.

DramaAlpaca · 26/02/2022 21:26

Gregory is nice, but Rory isn't a natural diminutive of it.

resm · 26/02/2022 21:46

Really like it, but I’m a big House MD fan. Think it goes very well with Edward.

ThatsNotMyGolem · 27/02/2022 15:22

It's one of those names that's nice in theory, but when you break down the sounds it's ugly. "Gr" - "egg" - "gorree". Greg is an unpleasant sound, like a slang word for retching.

DogsAndGin · 02/03/2022 19:21

Very dated

gingerhills · 02/03/2022 19:38

Cute. I like it.
