Freddie or Rory

Hi all

Our second baby is due in June. We don't officially know if it's a boy or a girl but I think the sonographer slipped up at our 20 week scan (after we said we didn't want to know the sex) as she referred at the end to "his" spine and then quickly corrected herself to say "baby's" spine. A little annoying that the surprise has been ruined but it has at least given us a nudge about what names to focus on!

The front runners at the moment are Freddie and Rory. I'd be really interested in people's opinions of these names and which one you prefer.

I prefer Freddie.

OrangeAndYellowAndBlue · 12/02/2022 09:30

Rory for me. A name with a long, noble history.

Sarcobaleno · 12/02/2022 09:31

Rory is lovely

maybein2022 · 12/02/2022 09:31

Freddie. Lovely name and it’s on our list.

UserBot9to5 · 12/02/2022 09:34

Hmmm, I like both.

StopForAMinute · 12/02/2022 09:38

I like both too. Slightly prefer Freddie.

UserBot9to5 · 12/02/2022 09:38

PS, my first, the sonographer ''slipped'' too I thought and I thought I'd heard her say his but it could have been I was confused. Over the years I've doubted myself. I was expecting a boy, but when my baby was born, they said ''so is this a boy then?'' and i looked and said in the confusion ''I'll sort it out later''. So I wonder if 'his spine' or 'his fold' could be a default. Honestly, after doing twenty scans a day when they're half way through yours they could be in a fugue state and refer to the sex of the baby in the scan they were doing fifteen minutes earlier.

Mumoblue · 12/02/2022 09:41

I like Rory better than Freddie. Also don’t be too married to the idea that the slip up was confirmation- they could just use “his” as default!

loulou2021 · 12/02/2022 10:15

Oooh it's quite close between the two. Thanks so much for replying everyone!

@UserBot9to5 @Mumoblue ah hadn't thought about the fact that the sonographer could use "his" by default or that I possibly misheard. I guess we do still have a surprise after all 😀

I love the name Rory.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 12/02/2022 11:39

I like Rory

Freddie

Bosephine · 12/02/2022 12:11

Marginally prefer Freddie but only because I know an annoying Rory.

Steelesauce · 12/02/2022 12:25

I have a Rory, he's the only one in his class which is nice. Not too out there but a bit different.

bloominglovelyorange · 12/02/2022 12:25

"It's spine" sounds exactly the same as "his spine" - try it. I've heard this happen many times where "it's" has been misheard as "his". So I don't think they have ruined surprise. Also - Sonographer won't really be thinking about what the gender is unless you ask - many just use "he" as default. Sexists haha.

I much prefer Freddie. Rory is so trendy at the moment and there's so many Ro... names that are trending.

Steelesauce · 12/02/2022 12:27

On the other hand, I have a very popular name (Freddie is very popular where I am) and there's 4 in his class, pick up and school phone calls get confusing Grin my youngest has an equally popular girls name and I'm guessing I will have the same issues with her. Rory is def my favourite out of all my children's names.

mumof2nanof1 · 12/02/2022 13:23

Freddie

Gigi97 · 12/02/2022 13:35

Freddie

confuseddotcom1234 · 12/02/2022 13:59

Rory really like it

DramaAlpaca · 12/02/2022 14:20

Rory, by about a hundred miles.

Freddie is awful.

Luredbyapomegranate · 12/02/2022 17:29

Rory. It’s super popular but fabulous

Freddie also super popular but a bit dull. If you do use it I would definitely use Frederick or Alfred as a first name.

loulou2021 · 12/02/2022 19:42

Thanks for all of the replies. It's still pretty tight between the names. I think they are both great. I've always loved Freddie but I know my mum doesn't like it (which shouldn't make a difference, but it does taint it a little for me) and I've also got a good friend with a Freddie (although due to distance we don't see each other much and I think if I asked her she'd be fine with it). Rory is one I've only considered recently. Wasn't overly keen at first but it has really grown on me.

@bloominglovelyorange yes I see what you mean "it's spine" does sound a lot like "his spine". Now I'm not sure if the sonographer has given the game away!

I personally don't like the "ie" endings on boy names in official documents like Charlie, Freddie etc.

They sound a bit baby-ish and not strong enough for adults. I prefer Charles, Frederick etc.

Rory is not my taste too.. Too many "R"...

Caramelcap · 13/02/2022 22:21

Rory definitely out of those two.
What about Cody?
