Would your own name work as a baby name now?

Mine wouldn't, I don't think.

It's Belinda, but I go by variations of it. Was very popular in Australia in the 70's. But I can't remember the last time I heard of a baby named Belinda.

Do you have a nice timeless name or a dated one like mine?

The version ending in e is so 70s, doesn't have half the appeal.

babyjellyfish · 31/01/2022 13:36

Oh, M is a beautiful name! But I get how the song thing could be annoying.

floatinginmyhomie · 31/01/2022 13:37

Yes I think so

Namechangenumber1 · 31/01/2022 13:55

@babyjellyfish if it didn't happen quite so often, it would be quite funny, but I'm a grown adult, often speaking to other grown adults, and usually in a fairly professional context, so think that's why it's so annoying.

PrivateParty · 31/01/2022 20:42

@Blue4YOU

No. Mine I think was tarred with a certain brush by the hideous Katie Hopkins. I’ve never seen heard of a baby post mid seventies with my name.
I know a toddler called Katie...
MinglingFlamingo · 31/01/2022 20:57

I would but might go for one of the nick names as opposed to my actual full
Name

user1493494961 · 31/01/2022 21:16

Yes, mine's quite classic and has had a minor comeback, it's mentioned on here sometimes.

ChimpyChops · 31/01/2022 21:22

Emma.
Born in 1981, lots of us then. Would still work now but don't hear it very often.

LoveFall · 31/01/2022 21:35

I think mine would work. It is popular in primarily Catholic countries. I used a shortened version, which is what my parents planned to call me, but the nurses, who were nuns, convinced them to use the longer version, which is the name of a saint.

wheresmymojo · 31/01/2022 22:02

I'm an 80's Sarah.

It's a biblical classic so I expect it to come back in a generation or two and I'm sure there are baby Sarah's but it would feel a bit dated at the moment.

WeasilyPleased · 31/01/2022 22:34

Your name is my dh's favourite! Our dd is not called Belinda though. I love my name. Short and zingy. I believe there are babies born with my first name atm.

AliceMcK · 01/02/2022 01:52

Yes, seen it recommended on here a few times and my dd goes to nursery with a little girl with my name. I love my name it’s not an English name, growing up (70/80s) I never met anyone else with it, it’s not common in the uk but not unusual either.

SomeOwlsCoo · 01/02/2022 02:28

Mine was in the top 20 girls names last year so it must still be OK!

CoffeeAndCaramel · 01/02/2022 02:39

My name is an increasingly popular boys name now and begins with E

Cheesechips · 01/02/2022 03:01

Yes, it's a classic name.

dipdye · 01/02/2022 03:06

Yeah, mine is a classic. Think Elizabeth

ladycarlotta · 01/02/2022 12:50

mine was super rare in the 80s and 90s, nobody had heard of it and I always felt it entered the room before me, to an extent. It's now really popular in the charts and suggested on here all the time.

SprinkledGlitter · 01/02/2022 22:59

I think it would, even though it is quite rare these days - always has been quite uncommon.

DramaAlpaca · 02/02/2022 00:17

Mine's an underused classic these days. I think it's on the verge of a revival, I actually saw it described as 'cool' on here the other day, much to my surprise.

aibutohavethisusername · 02/02/2022 06:26

Full name no
Shortened version yes very much so

User154871 · 02/02/2022 06:35

No. Mine is unusual. Today I had the dreaded conversation for the millionth time.

'Is that your real name? How do you say it? How lovely! Where is it from...'
'It's Turkish. I'm not Turkish. Don't know what my mum was on to be honest!'

Loathe the conversation and accompanying mispronunciation even though they are trying to be nice. My children have very classic names.

Dustyblue · 02/02/2022 11:02

It is very strange to see my name scattered throughout a mumsnet thread!

Funny that some of this seems regional. For example, the idea that Belinda was never hugely popular in the UK so doesn't sound so dated now. There was an Australian "Miss World" (or Universe, something like that) contestant in the early 70's called Belinda, which sparked many of us. We should form a club.

By the same token some of the names here are beautiful IMO!

I wrote earlier in the thread that my name is too dated and 80s sounding. But it was mentioned on the cool names thread so maybe there's going to be an 80's name revival!

Liv999 · 02/02/2022 19:16

Yes its top ten 😁

Hiikiidiikki · 02/02/2022 19:23

Mine still works and often comes up on the name boards. I’ve always loved my name! Born late 80s. Robyn
