Hi,

I have complied a list of nature related Pakistani baby girl names that have roots in Farsi/ Pashto, please let me know if you think they’re pretty or not & which one you prefer for it’s sound. They all sound lovely to me in the Urdu language but being British Pakistani I know some of these might sound awful to non Urdu speakers!! These names all have very poetic & beautiful meanings.

Mahnoor
Mehwish
Mahgul
Maheen
Farimah
Mahroz
Mahlagha
Mahnaz
Mahnoosh
Mahasti

Thanks!

I really like Mehwish, Farimah and Mahnoosh.

What are the meanings?

HerRoyalHappiness · 19/01/2022 13:58

I love Mahnaz and Mahroz

Bluemamma · 19/01/2022 13:59

I love Farimah. Never heard it obviously but sounds feminine and pretty.

Babynamespring · 19/01/2022 14:00

Mehwish: face like the moon (beautiful)
Farimah: glorious moon
Mahnoosh: everlasting/ eternal moon

I honestly think they're all pretty! I'd avoid Mahlagha because it will remind people of the place Malaga - I'm assuming the pronunciation is nearly the same or identical.
My two faves are Farimah and Mahasti (is that pronounced with a 'sh' sound for the 's' OP?)

I'd love to know what they all mean too!

heldinadream · 19/01/2022 14:02

Cross post - oh glorious moon is so lovely!

RedCandyApple · 19/01/2022 14:04

Mehwish and farimah I like the best

WeeFae · 19/01/2022 14:08

Mahasti is my favourite!

Hellohah · 19/01/2022 14:13

@Babynamespring

Mehwish: face like the moon (beautiful) Farimah: glorious moon Mahnoosh: everlasting/ eternal moon
Ah, from the meanings Mahnoosh is my favourite.

But I do think Mehwish is the prettiest sounding.

Such a tough choice. Which do you like best OP?

chesirecat99 · 19/01/2022 14:22

They are all lovely names but I think Mahnoor will end up being mangled by English speakers and be too similar to manure. I prefer just Noor but I am guessing you specifically want a "moon" name?

Mahasti and Farimah are my favourites.

DotDotDotDotDot · 19/01/2022 14:33

Yes I was going to say avoid Mahnoor for the reason @chesirecat99 stated.
I like Mehwish, it has such a pretty sound and meaning. Good luck.

Babynamespring · 19/01/2022 14:48

Thanks so much everyone!
My favourite is actually Mahgul - not the prettiest sounding out of all of them but the meaning is so mystical, it means rose from the moon. (I know the moon doesn’t grow flowers haha, but that’s what makes it so mystical & alluring to me).

Babynamespring · 19/01/2022 14:54

*flower from the moon sorry not rose

Mahnoor - too close to 'manure'
Mehwish - Really lovely but I'm reminded of 'mew' as in the noise a cat makes - not sure if that's bad or not!
Mahgul - ok
Maheen - nice
Farimah - beautiful, and easy to say for non-Urdu speakers
Mahroz - nice and easy to say
Mahlagha - no, too much like Malaga!
Mahnaz - nice and easy to say
Mahnoosh - same
Mahasti - very pretty and also probably easy to say

To me the prettiest looking ones are Farimah and Mahasti. Maghul looks a little bit harsher? - however, it's lovely, easy to say and if that's your favourite go for it!

Porfre · 19/01/2022 15:03

I think mehwish sounds the best too me.

Theres some I'd avoid that have already been mentioned.

Mahgul reminds me of moguls so might want to avoid that one too.

Wineisoverrated · 19/01/2022 15:06

Farimah is absolutely stunning.

The others I all think are nice apart from Mahnoor. It’s a bit too close to manure and man whore for me.

ivfbabymomma1 · 19/01/2022 15:38

Another vote for Farimah! I love that

StrychnineInTheSandwiches · 19/01/2022 15:42

Farimah is my favourite. Is it pronounced farry-ma or fa-REE-ma? Either way sounds lovely though.

Maheen is nice too.

KittenKong · 19/01/2022 15:43

I have an aunty Mahin.

Bobbybobbins · 19/01/2022 15:49

I teach a Maheen and she is lovely so I choose that one!

DuneFan · 19/01/2022 15:53

Farimah is lovely.

Mahgul sounds a little like Maghull which is a fairly nice area of Liverpool but shouldn't be an issue if you are not in the North West! And I also echo the Malaga comment.

All of your options are nice really Smile

Marimaur · 19/01/2022 16:55

Mahnoor is beautiful.
I also love the name Noor.

Marimaur · 19/01/2022 16:59

I didn’t hear manure when I said it out loud. But I get it might be harshly pronounced in the uk..

KirstenBlest · 19/01/2022 18:30

Isn't Maghul in Merseyside and Mahlagha in Spain?

SleepingStandingUp · 19/01/2022 18:35

Mahnoor I misread the h and n twice as manhoor so hard no.
Mehwish cute but I think the me wish thing might be problematic
Mahgul is it a soft ah in the middle? I really like it
Maheen this is ok
Farimah think this sounds great, it sounds quite exotic compared to the others
Mahroz just not keen
Mahlagha how different is it pronounced to Malaga as in the holiday destination?
Mahnaz don't like the end sound
Mahnoosh this is cute
Mahasti this is ok.

So Mahgul or Farimah
