Babynamespring · 19/01/2022 13:51

Hi,

I have complied a list of nature related Pakistani baby girl names that have roots in Farsi/ Pashto, please let me know if you think they’re pretty or not & which one you prefer for it’s sound. They all sound lovely to me in the Urdu language but being British Pakistani I know some of these might sound awful to non Urdu speakers!! These names all have very poetic & beautiful meanings.

Mahnoor
Mehwish
Mahgul
Maheen
Farimah
Mahroz
Mahlagha
Mahnaz
Mahnoosh
Mahasti

Thanks!

I like Farimah, Mahnoor and Mahasti, in that order. I agree with PP to avoid Mahlagha just for the Malaga association.

MissHavishamsMouldyOldCake · 20/01/2022 10:14

Mahnoor instantly stands out as not being workable in the UK as it sounds like 'manure'.

Farimah stands out for being the most beautiful!

MissHavishamsMouldyOldCake · 20/01/2022 10:15

(I'd rather my name reminded people of holiday resort Malaga than manure tbh)

Babynamespring · 20/01/2022 10:21

I agree with the Mahnoor / Mahlagha associations so have crossed them off my list, I didn’t realise before posting these names that they were bringing up such strong associations!!

The Mahgul association to Liverpool doesn’t really bother me so much, so I’ve kept that one on the list.

I thought I liked Mahnoor, until I saw above someone saying it might be misheard as manure, and now I think it might, so would cross this one off. I love Noor though, and would choose Noor over any names on this list
Farimah is also pretty.

MissHavishamsMouldyOldCake · 20/01/2022 10:35

Yeah, I think Noor is gorgeous too. Seems so elegant.

SparkleWhale · 20/01/2022 10:35

Farimah is beautiful.

LemonTreeGrove · 20/01/2022 10:43

Mahnoor is my favourite

LemonTreeGrove · 20/01/2022 13:43

But yes, now people have pointed out the manure thing it's put me off

BillGigolo · 20/01/2022 13:48

They are all lovely, OP. I like Mahnaz, Manoosh and Mahasti best.

KittenKong · 20/01/2022 13:59

In Iran Manoosh is a boys name.

Babynamespring · 20/01/2022 14:09

@KittenKong thanks for pointing this out! Lots of girls in Pakistan are named Mahnoosh so I didn’t know. Are any of the others on my list traditionally boys names?

OP posts:
KittenKong · 20/01/2022 14:37

The rest are girls. I do know a woman of Pakistani origin with a Persian boys name (which is used as a boys name in Pakistan). Her sisters all have Persian names (different pronunciations).

It’s not uncommon for older Pakistanis to speak Farsi. I almost gave the man in a corner shop next to my office heart failure when he was talking on the phone in Farsi and I addressed him… you could almost hear him thinking ‘what was I saying? What did she hear? Thank god I wasn’t being rude!’ Smile

oncemoreunto · 20/01/2022 15:01

I think Farimah is lovely.

I agree that words with h in the middle can be a little difficult for Brits to pronounce.
That said pick the name that means the most to you.

stmw321 · 20/01/2022 15:02

A Mahnoor got bullied at my school because her name sounded like 'Manure'

stmw321 · 20/01/2022 15:03

Habiba? I like that

KittenKong · 20/01/2022 15:53

I quite like Dana (wise) or Darya/Daria (sea).
Farah means happy.
Maryam is pretty common (it’s a flower).
Shirin/Shireen is sweet (there was a Queen called that).

Tara is star and Soraya is princess.
Sara is pure and Roxana is light.
Nasrin is a type of rose.
Monoo is heaven (but is a pet name in France but is slang for something naughty - so I’ve been told!).
Ziba is beautiful.
Parisa means like a fairy.

Fereshteh is Angel (ish) and Rana is elegant. Sepideh is Dawn and Shiva means charming. Laleh is a tulip. Parvaneh is butterfly.

Zohreh is Venus.

Yup I’d avoid those with a h/heh in the middle and ending in deh (‘deh’) and they might be tricky to pronounce.

I suppose the good thing is that the spellings aren’t ‘set’ and can be phonetic!

TheVanguardSix · 20/01/2022 15:59

Farimah is beautiful
I also love Mahnoor (that's my favourite on your list). But I can see why you might want to avoid using it. It's such a great name though.
Noor and Noura are other options.
I like Mahnaz and Mahroz.

KittenKong · 20/01/2022 16:20

The ‘heh’ can be a bit harsh sounding mah-naaz and nah-rohz

EdgeOfACoin · 20/01/2022 21:13

@heldinadream

I honestly think they're all pretty! I'd avoid Mahlagha because it will remind people of the place Malaga - I'm assuming the pronunciation is nearly the same or identical. My two faves are Farimah and Mahasti (is that pronounced with a 'sh' sound for the 's' OP?) I'd love to know what they all mean too!
This is exactly what I was going to say.
BiscuitLover3678 · 20/01/2022 21:46

Farimah stood out as sounding beautiful.

toddybell · 20/01/2022 23:07

@Babynamespring

Thanks so much for all the helpful comments!!

My shortlist at the moment is
Mahgul - moon flower
Mahnoosh - eternal moon
Farimah - glorious moon

I’m definitely leaning more towards Mahgul at the moment

Mahnoosh might be mispronounced by some as Manhoos (cursed?) something to bear in mind.

My Neice is Mahnoor (strong emphasis on the 'h'= MaHHnoor) and it's a stunning name. The other one I like is Maheen- I know quite a few. Mehwish is very 80s- again, quite a few of them around! Mehreen might be another option- means 'sun-like' or 'lovable'.

HotChocolate16 · 21/01/2022 06:49

I also like Farimah :)

I hope you don’t mind me asking, are you Pakistani? It reads as if you are. I am expecting a boy (husbands Pakistani) and would love some boy name suggestions if you have any? Apologies if you are not! X

HoliHormonalTigerlilly · 26/01/2022 20:30

What did you chose OP???

Twinkleylight · 27/01/2022 03:34

Mahgul - not my favourite & British speakers will mangle the name to magle

Maheen - nice and easy to pronounce

Farimah - beautiful and as above

Mahroz - nice and and as above

Mahlagha - no to this one and similar to Malaga!

Mahnaz - nice and easy to say

Mahnoosh - lovely and as above

Mahasti - gorgeous & easy to pronounce

Mahnoor - lovely but British speakers can't pronounce the r at the end of a word so it'll sound like Mahnoh rather than Mahnoor with the emphasis on the final letter.

I like Nuriyah, my friend's name, and it comes from the Arabic name Noor which means light. She is Pakistani too.
