Babynamespring · 19/01/2022 13:51

Hi,

I have complied a list of nature related Pakistani baby girl names that have roots in Farsi/ Pashto, please let me know if you think they’re pretty or not & which one you prefer for it’s sound. They all sound lovely to me in the Urdu language but being British Pakistani I know some of these might sound awful to non Urdu speakers!! These names all have very poetic & beautiful meanings.

Mahnoor
Mehwish
Mahgul
Maheen
Farimah
Mahroz
Mahlagha
Mahnaz
Mahnoosh
Mahasti

Thanks!

My lovely neighbour is Mehvish, so that's definitely my favourite!
I also know a delightful young woman named Mahnoor.

ClariceQuiff · 19/01/2022 18:53

I really like Mahlagha - I understand that people might initially be reminded of Malaga the place but that's not really a negative association - it's just a place, if anything, a pleasant holiday destination. And it's the sort of association you'd think of briefly and forget.

KittenKong · 19/01/2022 19:03

Jasmin/Yasmin
Shireen/Shirin
Lyla/Lilah
Aryana
Darya
Estella
Friya
Pria
Mina

KittenKong · 19/01/2022 19:03

Oh and some people I know of Pakistani origin use male (traditional) Persian names for girls.

RedCandyApple · 19/01/2022 19:09

I agree about Mahlagha, my friends daughter is called Malia and at first I though of the party destination that use to be popular but now I don’t make the association at all, it’s not a big deal if it sounds the same/similar

KittenKong · 19/01/2022 19:11

Gol and Joon are generally tacked onto girls names (don’t really have middle names). Meaning rose and darling respectively.

KittenKong · 19/01/2022 19:12

Mariam/Maryam (very very propular). Also Zara/Sara.

Meredusoleil · 19/01/2022 19:14

My favourites are Mahnoor with the h NOT silent meaning Moonlight, Mahnaz and Farimah.

Unfortunately, having taught a Paksitani girl called Mahnoor, the h was often omitted in pronunciation thus ruining the name for me.

My own first name (Persian) has an h in it which is also often ignored, so I would strongly recommend avoiding a name with an h in the middle.

Mahasti although nice, does remind me too much of the famous Persian singer (a favourite of my late father's actually).

How about Soraya or Sharzaad instead? I like Nazaneen (not Nazneen) and Shahnaaz too but they become Naz for short which I don't like.

Meredusoleil · 19/01/2022 19:16

Or what about

Donya (World)
Darya (Sea)

I think they would make a great sibset for 2 sisters 😍

Oh yes the pronunciation can be tricky (especially with ‘rehhh’ sounds).

A friend in the US is called Negar - you need to be careful how you pronounce that, I can tell you…

Meredusoleil · 19/01/2022 19:29

Omg that must be very awkward at times 😮

givememarmite · 19/01/2022 19:47

I love lots of the names on your list, I think my favourites are Farimah & Mahnoosh, but I agree with PP that pronunciation of the h in the middle can sometimes be difficult to get right. On the other hand, I have also spent my life correcting the pronunciation of my welsh name and people do get it eventually!

KineticSand · 19/01/2022 19:52

I've taught girls with several of these names over the years. I love Farimah and Mahnoor. Noor on its own is very classy as lovely too.

This is also a good point. British English speakers don't pronounce h unless it has a vowel after it. I would go so far to say can't pronounce h unless it is followed by a vowel, it's not really a sound that exists.

user1493494961 · 19/01/2022 20:26

Farimah is the nicest followed by Maheen, I'm not keen on any of the others.

I have a cousin called Fatima (the religious wing of the family) whose nicknames are fatty or farty (they are in the ME - so that doesn’t really export well either).
SeanChailleach · 19/01/2022 20:30

I like Mahnoosh, both the sound and meaning.
Mahroz is lovely too.
Mahnoor is so gorgeous but maybe if spelled Machnoor. Does the h ever be spelt ch? It often sounds like Irish ch?

GreyGoose1980 · 19/01/2022 20:30

I like Mahnoor or Farimah

KittenKong · 19/01/2022 20:45

@Babynamespring

Mehwish: face like the moon (beautiful) Farimah: glorious moon Mahnoosh: everlasting/ eternal moon
I’d go with Farimah - very pretty, lovely meaning, easy to say and spell.
Montague22 · 19/01/2022 23:16

Mahnoor love and also Noor
Mehwish like
Mahgul dislike
Maheen ok
Farimah love
Mahroz ok
Mahlagha ok
Mahnaz dislike
Mahnoosh ok
Mahasti like, but might rhyme with ‘nasty’

Babynamespring · 20/01/2022 07:52

Thanks so much for all the helpful comments!!

My shortlist at the moment is
Mahgul - moon flower
Mahnoosh - eternal moon
Farimah - glorious moon

I’m definitely leaning more towards Mahgul at the moment

As someone with an ‘h’ in the middle that is pronounced similarly to these it can be tricky for English speakers. They can still say my name, but it just doesn’t sound how it is supposed to but perfectly acceptable. (I also have a rolled r).

Scirocco · 20/01/2022 08:07

I love them - beautiful meanings and I don't think any of them are too difficult to pronounce. I think Mahgul is my favourite from your shortlist, but all three are lovely.
