Disaster - I need a new girl's name!

The name I had tucked away as my favourite for 2nd DD has been flagrantly stolen by my cousin, so now I can't use it!

(I'm just kidding, it's not a disaster, and you can't "steal" a name, I know!)

DD is Orla, and something with an Irish feel would be lovely, due to family background. Also want to avoid a "sh" sound due to surname, and no "n"s for the same reason.

Any suggestions? Thank you in advance!

Just use it anyway?
I would. The kids are second cousins not sisters!
Derbee · 15/01/2022 14:22

Maeve

Elderflower14 · 15/01/2022 14:45

Nola???

irishfarmer · 15/01/2022 14:50

I see a few people have said Fionnuala I love that name.

Love some of the others that have come up - Tara, Maeve, Cara

Also:
Alannah
Aoibhean (A-veen)
Roisin
Mairead

As you’re not in Ireland you should think about how the name is spelt and potentially mispronounced. It gets old having to repeatedly explain how to spell and pronounce your name to people once you’re out of Ireland.

irishfarmer · 15/01/2022 14:51

I missed the fada's on there couldn't get them up on the keyboard

Hiyawotcha · 15/01/2022 15:00

Clodagh?

Journeylikenomother · 15/01/2022 15:02

I love Clodagh! Currently trying to convince my DH.

Eilís (pronounced Aisle-eesh) is lovely, Irish for Elizabeth.

Dara is lovely for a girl

UserBot314159 · 15/01/2022 15:03

or Clio short for Cliodhna
Orla and Clio go well

Soontobe60 · 15/01/2022 15:04

Not really, plus many places are very multicultural & have lots of cultural names that are new to me.

Skeumorph · 15/01/2022 15:08

Not in Ireland and know 3 boy Daras, no girls. I didn't know it was used for a girl at all and not keen.

Nola is horrible! Reminds me of the Nolan sisters. So drab.

Skeumorph · 15/01/2022 15:09

Also Orla and Nola much too close - sounds a bit odd together. Unless they are hamsters.

Lockdownbear · 15/01/2022 15:13

Finnoula?

What was the name you wanted to use?
Depending on your family and the likelihood of paths crossing I would be tempted to use it, especially for second cousins - I rarely if ever see my second cousins.

TheDuchessOfMN · 15/01/2022 15:15

I think Dara sounds very feminine. Daragh would be the male spelling.

I love the name Maeve but think it’s a shame to spell it that way (rather than Méabh) although I understand why you might if living in the UK.

donkeyhottie · 15/01/2022 15:20

How is Clodagh pronounced?

FryingpanintoFire · 15/01/2022 15:20

Maeve is beautiful.

Chloemol · 15/01/2022 15:21

Just use the name. Your cousin doesn’t own it

TheDuchessOfMN · 15/01/2022 15:21

@donkeyhottie

The gh is silent

zebrarobot · 15/01/2022 15:22

Is Eilidh Irish? I think it's Scots Gaelic, is there an Irish version?

I see you like Maeve. That's a beautiful name, and as you're in England it's one of the easiest for people to grasp 😉
