I recently heard of an Elphinstone Dalgleish. Have also met a couple of kids called Star.

What fun/marvellous/slightly wacky names have you come across?

I used to work in a bank, and did feel for people called Diaper, De'ath, O'nions etc....! (There was a boy at college called Timothy Onions and he just pronounced it like the vegetable, but our customers were definitely 'Oh-Nyons'....Smile). Strangely - I remember all those but don't recall coming across anything that would count as 'splendid', although there must have been.....

The best name I ever heard was the former president of Nigeria, Goodluck Jonathan.

I taught a Tuesday Biddle, and know a toddler called Ezekiel Pollock. I was at university with a woman called Faux (pronounced Fox) Hylands.

OhLordyWhatNow · 11/01/2022 00:30

I've worked with someone called Crispin Golden.

PeeAche · 11/01/2022 00:31

@Chunkymenrock

I interviewed a lady called Coriander.
But in America, they call her cilantro.
Anynamewilldo2 · 11/01/2022 00:33

My grandpa used to talk about a lawyer he knew called Rupert Bear. Loved that!

Oria and Elianna (mentioned earlier) are pretty common Jewish names, with lovely meanings Smile

I know a teenage Miracle
So do I - named because her mother was taking so many drugs it was a miracle she was conceived and born safe and well. Mother has no idea who her father was.

I had a schoolfriend called Ailsa Craig which I loved as a name - I had no idea it was an island in Scotland. I wonder if her parents knew ir just liked the name Ailsa.

lolatheavocado · 11/01/2022 00:40

Silas Dangerfield. I always think he sounds like a Bond villain

Hairyfriend · 11/01/2022 00:43

Oh dear. The 1st name Comfort sounds like either a sanitary or incontinence pad!

I know a Sky Blue, Mr Wildfire and a Mary Christmas.

Pieceofpurplesky · 11/01/2022 00:45

I met someone called Desiree Brackenbury and always imagined her as a heroine in a 1970s mills and boom romance.
I have taught a Precious, a Meadow, a Miracle and a Paige Turner.

RhubarbFairy · 11/01/2022 00:45

I have known

Marmaduke
Valentine
Precious
And I know two Carenza/Kerensa's (they each spell it differently)

OhLordyWhatNow · 11/01/2022 00:48

Paige Turner reminded me of a child at my DD's school called Henrietta Page

THE INCREDIBLE BOOK EATING BOY
Like many children, Henry loves books. Though Henry doesn’t like to read books, he likes to eat them! But one day he feels sick to his stomach. Can Henry find a way to enjoy books without using his teeth?

imnotacelebritygetmeoutofhere · 11/01/2022 00:54

There is a girl way back in my family tree named Urania, we've always wondered if she was named after the planet (Uranus).

OzziePopPop · 11/01/2022 00:57

@DoucheCanoe

Liberty Bell is probably the funkiest name I've come across.

I actually quite like the names Tuesday and Wednesday for a girl but would never be brave enough to use them myself!

I had a horse called Liberty Bell (Libby) as a teen, a beautiful huge Clydesdale mare. It would be really odd for me to know a child with the same name!

@Pearlyqueen21

I love reading the annual list of all babies born in Scotland, and have seen many amazing names, favourites being Baroque—Valentine and Sassy-Boo Grin
This is one of my favourite things to do each year too. In different years I've found babies called Panda, Possum and Ptarmigan and I've always wondered if they were siblings.

DD had friends throughout different years at school called Bono, Vlad and Santa. Bono was English but the other two were from Eastern European countries (can't remember exactly which ones) so probably not so unusual there.

She also went to school with an Indiana Jones. She called him Indy.

Eastie77Returns · 11/01/2022 01:05

My lovely midwife was called Cinderella.

Onehotmessiah · 11/01/2022 01:13

@Lena18

I used to be in the travel industry a lifetime ago and once booked a holiday for a family the kids names were:

Phoenix
Diesel
Shakira
Beyoncé
Hannah-Montana

😂😂😂 stop it! It’s like they started out with slightly unusual and then by the last one, fuck it, what’s on TV?!
Onehotmessiah · 11/01/2022 01:15

Excellent
Blessing
Happiness
Favour
I love a name with a literal meaning

toddybell · 11/01/2022 01:22

RobertSmithsLipstick · 11/01/2022 01:23

I met someone called Alisa Craig years ago I wonder if it was the same one.

Tarquin, Torquel and Elise when we lived in Scotland. Also a Shell Rainbow.
We had Churchill in our class a lovely boy. Spencer was another it grew on me and he was a lovely, cheeky chap pie and it really suited him. Just heard it again the other day.

Had a girl with a fantastic name but don’t want to say. She has just gone to Oxford.Used to love saying her name, it was foreign and just rolled off the tongue, would make a marvellous name for an author.

Had a Ruby Tuesday too. Loved her.
Met an Aurelie. Have a Xanthe in the family. Knew twins called Holly and Ivy, no kidding.
A Christabel, at least three Heidi’s and a Valentina.DD has a friend called Santiago.
I went to school with a Loretta and always thought that was a pretty name.

pantaloonie · 11/01/2022 01:29

My aunt & my mum claim they knew a guy called Warwick Castle when they were teens/early twenties. I think my aunt even went on a date with him. We still take the piss about it now that they are in their mid/late 80's Grin

Teaseall · 11/01/2022 01:34

Also my ex DH (catholic) swore blind that the priest at his church was called Father Willie Strain, always made me chuckle.
