Is he not a big purple dinosaur?
Although I'm not sure people know who he is these days

VioletLemon · 25/12/2021 09:09

You might live to regret re purple dinosaur connotations. Don't know if that Barney is still a thing though?! Plus in Scotland 'barney' means massive argument. You must've had doubts otherwise you wouldn't have posted. Sorry! Happy Christmas though xx

happystory · 25/12/2021 09:14

Sorry, sounds like a dog's name...

freelions · 25/12/2021 09:16

I love it but would put Barnaby on the birth certificate

ofwarren · 25/12/2021 09:17

Agree with other posters.
Purple dinosaur
An argument
Dogs name

Buytoomuchonebay · 25/12/2021 09:20

I know a lady who called her gorgeous baby Barney
I cough renamed him Barry as a joke and it stuck! (I was joking)
It’s a nice enough name but not to my taste-if you like it that’s all that matters

2reefsin30knots · 25/12/2021 09:22

I'd go for Barnaby or Barnabus on the birth certificate. Barney as nn when little, can be something a bit cooler like Barnes when he is older.

Frannibananni · 25/12/2021 09:22

No. Nope. No

TheOrigRights · 25/12/2021 09:23

I know a 12 year old Barnaby/Barney - no issues at all.

Freddie456 · 25/12/2021 20:17

Love it. Was on my list

Largethighsbadeyes · 25/12/2021 20:26

Dog/large purple dinosaur

takingmytimeonmyride · 25/12/2021 20:35

I have one - he's a teen now. I've come across far more dogs called Barney though. Which doesn't bother me, it makes me smile.

The purple dinosaur has come up a couple of times, but I don't think many kids watch it now, so it's mainly older people who've said it, or one of his brothers American friends, as it was bigger there I think? I've never actually watched it.

Obviously I think it's a lovely name. He's Barnaby on his birth certificate, but rarely called that.

Ohyesiam · 25/12/2021 20:35

Sounds like a joke name , or a cartoon name to me.

Cindie943811A · 25/12/2021 22:47

I automatically think Flintstones.
Funny, a few days ago someone was asking about the name Wilma

audley · 27/12/2021 00:44

I have a teenage Barney/ Barns/ Barnaby we and he like his name. Many, many dogs share his name, but it’s never mentioned. Mostly dinosaur then Flintstone if anything.

LonginesPrime · 27/12/2021 00:56

Barney Gumble from the simpsons.

sykadelic · 27/12/2021 01:22

Not one I would choose because I immediate thought of the purple dinosaur, promptly followed by Barney Stinson from How I Met Your Mother. Also don't know anyone with the name personally so have no other connections to the name.

My son is Max (with a longer official version on his BC). It's also a dogs name, a friend commented "maxi pad", his name is on everything (as the top volume, or catch phrases), but it's just... him. So I have no regrets. My very normal name was the name of a stripper on a popular TV show when I was little... wasn't anything like that when I was named.

You can't win, you can only be happy with what you choose. It will mean something to you.

Janeandjohnny · 27/12/2021 01:25

Mmmm. A bookie or a labrador maybe. A kid, no.

AnnaMarieQ · 27/12/2021 01:30

Barney is a popular dog’s name around here

Luredbyapomegranate · 27/12/2021 08:11

Nice, but needs Barnabas or Barnaby on the birth cert, otherwise too cutesy.

There was another thread on this a week ago which was weirdly much more positive. I suspect it might be about to take of..

WakeUpLockie · 27/12/2021 08:14

I know a couple. I prefer Barnaby to Barnabas. Think both names are soft and kind. It’s having a moment, like Cleo.

Heruka · 27/12/2021 08:20

It’s a teddies’ name to me.

finished31 · 27/12/2021 09:09

Love Barney.

It's different and sounds 100% better than the million Harry, Thomas, James, Alfie , Archie blah blah that as soon popular now.

DollyPartBaked · 27/12/2021 09:14

I know a lovely little Barney and think it really suits him.

The dinosaur is quite a dated reference. A bit like Felix the cat, it will fall away eventually!

shreddies · 27/12/2021 09:31

I love it and wanted to call one of my sons that.

Lots of people went on about the dinosaur so I thought I'd better not but I wish I had used it. I think it's a lovely name and no kids watch that dinosaur now anyway
