What are your thoughts on the name Wilma? I've never met one but think it's cute and gas the kind of retro feel that is very popular at the moment.

Obviously there is Wilma from the Flintstones which I'm sure will get mentioned on here, but no children are going to know about that as it's not been on TV in years.

Can't decide whether it's hideous or actually quite sweet

GrendelsGrandma · 22/12/2021 13:04

I like it but think Willa is better. Also Thelma and Alma. Or Wilbur for a boy.

toastofthetown · 22/12/2021 13:04

I think it’s quite sweet, in the same vein as Alma. I prefer it to Willa and Willow. It does make me think of a radio jingle from when I was a child, but I imagine that’s a pretty niche reference!

gogohm · 22/12/2021 13:04

Sorry I just thought flintstones

SanFranBear · 22/12/2021 13:05

Wilma is my cars name... sorry, no help Grin

Do agree that Willa is nicer though!

HoldingTheDoor · 22/12/2021 13:06

It's one of the ugliest names ever.

GotoutoftheUKphew · 22/12/2021 13:07

It’s bloody awful. Just don’t.
Alma is a nice name though.

TuftyMarmoset · 22/12/2021 13:10

Big no from me. For starters it’s an ugly name and I would hate to be called it myself. Secondly I did think Flintstones and it was definitely on Cartoon Network in the early 2000s so I wouldn’t be surprised if it was still on periodically.

LesLavandes · 22/12/2021 13:14

Noooo

BlameItOnTheBlackStar · 22/12/2021 13:14

Absolutely god awful.

Put it down to hormones, and thank yourself in a few years' time that you did.

PaperThinWalls · 22/12/2021 13:16

I know a Wilma. It’s an unusual name but it suits the girl I know.

Marimaur · 22/12/2021 13:57

I wouldn’t chose it, especially not just to be trendy.

DukkaTheHallsWithBoughsOfHolly · 22/12/2021 15:59

Such an ugly name, no.

MissMarplesGoddaughter · 22/12/2021 16:00

@gogohm

Sorry I just thought flintstones
Me too!
RoseDog · 22/12/2021 16:01

My mum and my next door neighbour are Wilmas, one is in her 60s and the other in her 70s!

My biggest concern about a Wilma is if when they get to school and use the Oxford reading tree books, there is a Wilma in them!

Orreries · 22/12/2021 16:03

It makes me expect to see a baby born prematurely middle-aged, with a beehive, a fag and those sparkly winged sixties glasses.

Twinkleylight · 22/12/2021 16:09

Your secondary aged daughter isn't going to thank you for lumbering her with a cute name. Remember you're naming a future adult and not just a baby so choose carefully. Choose a name that is longer or more classical which can be shortened when they're younger. It can then be used as the longer version when the child is a teen or an adult. For example: Annie is perfect for a child but Anna suits an adult better as it's more classier.

ImInStealthMode · 22/12/2021 16:11

I know a teenage Wilma, very cool surfer girl.

I don't think today's kids are as quick with the Flintstones connection as Adults are.

DramaAlpaca · 22/12/2021 17:17

I find it a very ugly name.

Lightningrain · 22/12/2021 17:20

I know three dogs and a cat called Wilma but I don’t hate it as a name.

user1493494961 · 22/12/2021 17:23

Hideous.

Chunkymonkey13 · 22/12/2021 17:23

My dad suggests this name as a joke

headintheproverbial · 22/12/2021 17:27

I just hear 'WIIIIIIILMAAAAA' from the flintstones

RubyFakeLips · 22/12/2021 17:27

Ugly name, don't mind Willa though.

Icecreaminwinter · 22/12/2021 17:27

Baaad.
