What are your thoughts on the name Wilma? I've never met one but think it's cute and gas the kind of retro feel that is very popular at the moment.

Obviously there is Wilma from the Flintstones which I'm sure will get mentioned on here, but no children are going to know about that as it's not been on TV in years.

But practically every child in England will have heard of wilma- sister to wolf and friend of biff and chip

dustandfluf · 22/12/2021 17:37

It's hideous.

Words · 22/12/2021 17:38

Short for Wilhelmina , isn't it?
Blyton ( am old)
I thought it was pronounced Will HELLmina
Unhelpful, sorry.

ItsSnowJokes · 22/12/2021 17:39

I like it!

Bideshi · 22/12/2021 17:40

Seriously?

ErrolTheDragon · 22/12/2021 17:41

Nope.
And Willa sounds too much like Willow pronounced wrongly.

Wilma55 · 22/12/2021 17:42

Don't do it!

wineandcheeseplease · 22/12/2021 17:50

I love it

DameAlyson · 22/12/2021 18:03

Alma is a nice name though.

A character from Coronation Street. And a battle in the Crimean War.

Pinkandpink · 22/12/2021 18:06

Please dont. Poor child.

irishfarmer · 22/12/2021 18:24

Really not a fan.

Usernamenotavailabletryanother · 22/12/2021 18:33

Shouting that out across the playground would be fun Grin

Cleebope2 · 22/12/2021 18:33

Definitely not. I know a Wilma and feel sorry for her!

LetHimHaveIt · 22/12/2021 18:41

The peerless Beverly Cleary had a Willa-Jean in here 'Ramona' books. I normally despise double-barrelled forenames but I quite liked that. Wilma? I'm not sure. It's better than 'Alma' which is unremittingly awful.

Luredbyapomegranate · 22/12/2021 19:09

Well I hate Thelma and Alma so it’s a no from me, they all just make me think of rough barmaids, or trailer parks in the US. They just lack substance also.

Grizzlydog · 22/12/2021 19:13

I see Wilma and sound out yabba dabba do in my head. I do quite like it though and think it would grow on people in time.

Pemba · 22/12/2021 19:20

It's not as ugly as some names, eg Edna, but a bit dated and not really an attractive name. There are so many lovely girls' names out there!

DancerPrancerDonnerBlitzen · 22/12/2021 19:21

I don't like it, but I do like Willa

resm · 22/12/2021 19:24

It’s my aunt’s name and I’ve never made the Flintstones connection because I just associate it with her. I could see a wee TV baby pulling off Wilma, same feel as Martha and Norah for me.

Mimilamore · 22/12/2021 19:58

Love it...

resm · 22/12/2021 20:20

*baby (don’t know where “TV” came from)

ElvisPresleysSideburns · 22/12/2021 20:23

@gogohm

Sorry I just thought flintstones
Me too, sorry.
emmathedilemma · 22/12/2021 21:21

I know an old one and a dog. It suits the dog.
It’s ugly and I think Alma and Willa are even worse. Dated but not in a trendy way.

Flutterflybutterby · 24/12/2021 16:39

@Comedycook

Can't decide whether it's hideous or actually quite sweet
I think the latter! It's soft and pretty but not weak.
TheYearOfSmallThings · 24/12/2021 16:46

DS(7) has a Wilma in her class. She is a very beautiful, elegant blonde girl, and she wears the name well. It might be more challenging for a stocky little chunk of a child.
