Hi all,

We are having a baby boy but just cannot decide what to call him! We've got a short list of names we like, but none of them are jumping out at us right now. I think we may have to wait until he's here and we can see his face before we make our final decision! His middle name will be Matthew, and our surname is two syllables. This baby naming lark is so hard!

Bryn
Dylan
Finn
Flynn
Kester
Kit
Quinn
Torin

As you can see, we're not hugely traditional in our taste and we tend to like strong sounding names. Any other suggestions based on our list? Thanks everyone x

Lots of lovely names you have there. I personally love Bryn and Kit the most

IVflytrap · 16/12/2021 18:49

Finlay

Castor
Max

Brett

Two syllables with Matthew and a two syllable surname sounds strong and affirmative.

What’s your cultural/ethnic background? Some of these shortlisted names have connotations or associations.

Catnipples · 16/12/2021 19:08

Quinn is one of my favourite girls' names, I haven't heard it for a boy though...with that in mind, how about Quentin?

Not keen on Kester, sorry. And Kit might sound odd if the t isn't pronounced, more like 'kih'. Fletcher comes to mind, a bit like Flynn & Kester mixed..

BeKindBeYou · 16/12/2021 19:20

I love Kit!

KirstenBlest · 16/12/2021 19:20

Bryn - middle-aged welshman
Dylan- middle-aged welshman
Finn - nice but popular if you add the Finleys
Flynn - will get called Finn
Kester - not keen, sounds like Fester
Kit - popular
Quinn - quim
Torin - nice

helpmum2003 · 16/12/2021 19:25

Finn and Torin are my faves.

Thanks to everyone who has taken the time to respond, it's really helpful!

Sorry, I should have given a bit more info about mine and hubby's backgrounds for context.

His Nan was Welsh, and I have both Irish and Scottish connections on my Dad's side, hence the Bryn and Dylan, and Torin, Finn, Quinn and Kester.

Hubby's name is Chris so I quite like Kit or Kester as a tribute to him, as they're both diminutives of Christopher.

See, I have only heard of the Quinn-Quim connection here on Mumsnet! Something to consider I guess. I know it's also a name used for girls as well but that doesn't put me off, I don't mind the gender neutrality of it. I believe it's more common for boys in Ireland, but we live in the South East Grin

I think Quinn and Kit are our front runners at the moment but we still have a while to decide.

Finn & Torin are the only two I like.

Bubblty · 16/12/2021 19:56

Dylan

Jellybean100 · 16/12/2021 20:00

Kit or Torin. As your partner is Chris I’d go with Kit

BiscuitLover3679 · 16/12/2021 20:00

I like Bryn or Torin best. Also quite like Quinn but I'd assume a girl.
So many Finns about that would put me off. Kester makes me think of Kestrel Nd generally doesn't feel very attractive. Already forgotten the others.

LozMarieFielder · 16/12/2021 20:08

Kester isn’t the usual type of name I like but it’s quite cool. I also like Finn and Torin.

You seem to have a thing for names ending in ‘in’ or ‘yn’ so here are some more (and other names similar to your list):
Arwyn
Devyn
Albin
Edwin
Robin
Valentin
Hector
Cillian
Connor
Asher
Jesse

user1493494961 · 16/12/2021 20:23

I only like Flynn and Kit.

NigellaBangBangTurkey · 16/12/2021 20:33

I like most of your list, but all 3 votes are going to Dylan.

TheWomandestroyed · 16/12/2021 20:37

Why not call him Christopher and use Kit, since that's his dads name?

DietCokeChipsAndMayo · 16/12/2021 20:40

I’ve never heard of Kester before (neither has my phone, it keeps changing it to jester) but wow it is really really really bad
Really bad
Please don’t name your child this

CoddledAsAMommet · 16/12/2021 20:43

I love Kester and am surprised its not suggested more often. I think because it's unusual people haven't heard of it but it's a long-standing Scottish variation of Christopher so not made up. If you go for Kester you could still use Kit as a nickname.

SleepingStandingUp · 16/12/2021 20:44

Bryn - cute
Dylan - ok
Finn - cute
Flynn - love
Kester- noooo
Kit - as a nn, not a full name
Quinn - used is as a middle name, it nevfer felt quite "done" to me.
Torin - this one. I love it.

Hellocatshome · 16/12/2021 20:46

I like Finn and Torin how about Torben?

Iamanicepersonreally · 16/12/2021 20:48

I'm not keen on any of them. Especially Kester. Sorry

Pallisers · 16/12/2021 20:49

Love Kester. Also love Finn from that list.

mumofEandE · 16/12/2021 20:54

I think we have the same tastes as when choosing names for DS we had 3 of your list (and also Quinn as a name for our cat!)

Bryn Yes was on our list
Dylan
Finn Yes was on our list
Flynn
Kester no - people will think it is Chester spelt wrong
Kit Yes was on our list
Quinn Yes was on our list for the cat (big Homeland fan!) but I think of this as a girl's name!
Torin - sounds made up

We went with Euan in the end!

hopingforabrighterfuture2021 · 16/12/2021 22:05

Finn or Kit both lovely names!

Aquamarine1029 · 16/12/2021 22:09
