Libatius for a Boy

Pronounced Lye-Bay-Shus.

Came across the character Libatius Borage while re-reading Harry Potter and thought Libatius is actually a lovely name. Wondering what MN thought of it? I had a look on darkgreener and it isn’t in any use. Bit out there? Or a charming name that deserves more attention?

Nn Labia?

repottingthescabious · 12/12/2021 16:55

Its cringe making when people give their kids pretentious names that don't fit them.

trying to be something they'll never be. It's like they are trying to compensate for something missing in their life.

mildtomoderate · 12/12/2021 16:55

Severus, maybe?

IVflytrap · 12/12/2021 16:57

What about Lysander? It has the same first syllable sound, is also a name from HP (one of Luna's sons) and has the benefit of being a real, usable name. Grin

@MrsColon

Honestly? Sounds like one of Jacob Rees-Mogg's kids.
Indeed. Libatius Sextus Montgomery Gaius Rees Mogg.

I mean it’s fine if you’ve got his name down for Hogwarts since he’ll be in good company. If he’s going to the local school perhaps not?
@Holly60 thanks! Contanstine is so lovely and DH is on board with it. However, we have a longish double barrel surname which invites "oh you must be posh", I am hyper-concious of any name that could be considered pretentious because the surname is already there. While I don't care about these assumptions, I'm making a choice for a child who would have to deal with this, not just myself. It's something we really have to mull over.
Double barrel these days is the opposite of posh- as it triple and quadruple barrelled.

RockinHorseShit · 12/12/2021 17:37

Yeah, good one.Grin

Nobody really names their DC what effectively means "piss head"

Kanaloa · 12/12/2021 17:38

@OakPine

Why don't you change YOUR name to that ridiculous name if it makes you happy? Give your child a normal name for fucks sake - I despair. Poor child!
I often think this. If you love Libatius or Arsenius or Tyga or Draconius Bluetit - change your name and use it! Call your child a wearable name.

Too many people name a super special and beautiful infant. We’re not all Kardashians - most of our kids will grow up to be plumbers, teachers, retail workers, university students, electricians etc etc. Don’t name a baby, name a man/woman who works at Argos/is a uni lecturer/is a post delivery worker.

Kanaloa · 12/12/2021 17:39

That’s not to say you can only pick from the top 10 and everyone needs to be called Olivia and Henry, but some names just aren’t versatile and wearable, and seem to be more about the parent than the child. I wouldn’t want to introduce myself by Libatius!

Nsky · 12/12/2021 17:43

As someone who has their got wrong frequently no, be kind and realistic

Tinacollada · 12/12/2021 18:09

A cross between labia and clitoris.

Nice !

TuftyMarmoset · 12/12/2021 18:11

Libatius autocorrected to lunatics on my phone, so there’s that. It sounds too much like an adjective than a name and yes is mega pretentious.

Constantine is pretentious as well.

TuftyMarmoset · 12/12/2021 18:13

Lysander is also too pretentious with a double barrelled name and has the added drawback of the nn Lice.

oviraptor21 · 12/12/2021 18:14

Sounds libido to me.

oviraptor21 · 12/12/2021 18:14

*sounds like ....

User310 · 12/12/2021 18:29

Made me think of sebaceous cyst.

Elisemum · 12/12/2021 18:53

Aweful. You should be reported for child abuse.

TheCreamCaker · 12/12/2021 18:56

It sounds like some kind of medical condition Grin

MrsBobDylan · 12/12/2021 20:34

I know this isn't what you were asking but I double barrelled my kids names because I didn't want to take dh's name.

It's really bloody annoying and two of the kids just use dh's surname while the middle child wants to keep both but is disabled and can't say it or spell it.

If you must keep both names, don't hyphenate (we did and also regret that).

Then you can have Constantine which is lovely.

And Libatious? What in earth were you thinking?!!

Joystir59 · 12/12/2021 20:35

Labia is what came immediately to mind.

RoseMartha · 12/12/2021 20:43

No

JennyForeigner · 12/12/2021 20:46

A libation is a ritual alcoholic drink. Why not just jump straight to calling him Crazy Drunkass instead?

Alwayscheerful · 12/12/2021 20:55

Labia was first word I thought of.

Needdoughnuts · 12/12/2021 21:48

How about Herbaceous? Nn Herb
