Libatius for a Boy

SummaLuvin · 12/12/2021 09:21

Pronounced Lye-Bay-Shus.

Came across the character Libatius Borage while re-reading Harry Potter and thought Libatius is actually a lovely name. Wondering what MN thought of it? I had a look on darkgreener and it isn’t in any use. Bit out there? Or a charming name that deserves more attention?

Based on libation.

The kid will be called 'Lib' or 'Libby'.

Don't.

WeAreTheHeroes · 12/12/2021 09:36

Just no because of the connection to drinking. What about Tiberius or Maximus instead?

HeronLanyon · 12/12/2021 09:37

It’s a lovely sounding word I agree. He will forever be associated with religious liquids or alcohol. Not great. Not great at all.

MrsCremuel · 12/12/2021 09:38

Good God no!

PlinkPlankPlunk · 12/12/2021 09:39

If you like the sound of it OP, what about either Ignatius or Horatius (which are both actual names)?

FreeBritnee · 12/12/2021 09:40

Sounds like a venereal disease so I wouldn’t.

Elodeastar · 12/12/2021 09:45

@LittleBearPad

He’ll sound like an alcoholic.
I am interested in the reasoning behind this comment?

Don't.

It would actually be "Lie" or "Lie-b".
MeredithGreyishblue · 12/12/2021 09:48

You know its meaning?? And why JKR used it?

Unless you plan him a career in potions or brewing beer, I can't imagine you'd be thanked

stalkersaga · 12/12/2021 09:49

@Elodeastar "Libation" means "alcoholic drink". "Libatious" evokes someone who lives for heavy drinking.

EmmaGrundyForPM · 12/12/2021 09:50

@MrsColon

Also makes me think of The Libation Bearers
me too. Although I accept that probably we are in a minority Grin
Draggondragon · 12/12/2021 09:50

Makes me think of labia

RoRoYoYo · 12/12/2021 09:51

No! It sounds like you're setting him up to be an alcoholic.

Houseplantmad · 12/12/2021 09:57

Absolutely not unless you want his nickname to be pisshead.

More likely Labia from Y7 onwards
CherryAndAlmond · 12/12/2021 10:30

Oh no, please don't!

ZenNudist · 12/12/2021 10:32

Not an actual name. Asking for them to change it or use a middle name at first chance they get.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 12/12/2021 15:03

Sorry but It Sounds like something they’d call the next variant of Covid (We’ve no doubt got to look forward to)

AuntieStella · 12/12/2021 15:07

Definitely has the ring of alcohol!

startled · 12/12/2021 15:12

Poor kid

Holly60 · 12/12/2021 15:13

I actually quite like Constantine. Are you sure you can’t make that work?

PinkSyCo · 12/12/2021 15:17

Also, the fact that DH would never agree!

Thank the lord for your husband because I fear you OP must be quite mad! Lifuckingbatius 🤣🤣

AdaColeman · 12/12/2021 15:24

Don't forget that many of JKR's names are puns & in jokes!

What about Cornelius, a similar vibe, but an actual usable name?

SummaLuvin · 12/12/2021 15:25

@CherryAndAlmond

Oh no, please don't!
Don't worry! To quash any fears Mumsnetters have I can confirm this name was rapidly vetoed by DH, so not even a distant possibility. Like I said in a previous post I just like the sound of it and was curious to see what others thought. I didn't expect the majority to fawn over it, but it has been more overwhelmingly negative than I predicted. I guess all name use has to start somewhere - wasn't the name Wendy made up by the author of Peter Pan? Arlo has no baby name use in the UK until 1999 and now it is rank 27! Perhaps Libatius isn't the next trend though.

@Holly60 thanks! Contanstine is so lovely and DH is on board with it. However, we have a longish double barrel surname which invites "oh you must be posh", I am hyper-concious of any name that could be considered pretentious because the surname is already there. While I don't care about these assumptions, I'm making a choice for a child who would have to deal with this, not just myself. It's something we really have to mull over.
