Which names do you love that MN usually hates?

I love Kai and Kyle. I think they're lovely but strong names.

I also love the American surname type names e.g Sullivan, Ryder, Granger, Harrison Edison etc.

I also love names like Ruth, Heather and Camille, though I'm not sure how MN feels about those.

Though my friends hate the latter 3.

Paul, John and Peter. Biblical, used through the ages and internationally, no nasty abbreviations or mispronunciation risks. Often dismissed here as "dad names".

Clover - it usually gets “it’s a butter!” or “it’s a cow!”
It drives me mad when people go “it’s a place for boats!” (Marina) or whatever for names that are also nouns. Like they can’t hold two meanings in their head at the same time.

LittleGwyneth · 06/12/2021 14:11

Claudia and Cecily. They mean blind and lame in Latin which seems to be a major stumbling block for the classical scholars of mumsnet.

Synchrony · 06/12/2021 14:15

Difficult! I can think of lots of names MN loves but I hate, but not many the other way around!

Geoffrey maybe?
I also like lots of 80s names. There was a recent thread when someone's husband listed lots of names I like, but MN trashed it as sounding like an 80s school register. Like Jennifer, Sarah, Gemma.

I like a lot of long, frilly names that some on Mumsnet don't like.

Either the name is hated or people like the name but hate the spelling

Liam and Conor. I think they're strong, unfussy names.

A580Hojas · 06/12/2021 14:43

I love the name Kai. Also, for girls, Tracy.

Also big fan of Humphrey's corner :)

Especially when they're high court judge names! Hilarious!

I love all these.
TheYearOfSmallThings · 06/12/2021 15:42

I have a weakness for names like Opal and Misty. Hillbilly names I suppose.

DaisyWaldron · 06/12/2021 15:45

I like the "try-hard" classical/literary names, the "naughty" (male) and "ugly" ( female) Irish names, and the "ugly and old-fashioned" names like Mildred.

I love Violet, so many people on here think it sounds like violent... and I like Margot, which people dismiss as similar to maggot. Ridiculous because it's not pronounced at all the same, but also lots of words sound like other words so I don't see the issue.

And agree with a pp on cecilia, it was on my girls list last time and I don't really care if it means blind. It's not like that's going to magically make her actually be blind. And who even knows what other people's names mean? I know my own and that's about it. It's a beautiful name!

Swearwolf · 06/12/2021 15:48

Oh! And I gave my son a name that both sounds like a surname and sounds American...
