Which names do you love that MN usually hates?

I love Kai and Kyle. I think they're lovely but strong names.

I also love the American surname type names e.g Sullivan, Ryder, Granger, Harrison Edison etc.

I also love names like Ruth, Heather and Camille, though I'm not sure how MN feels about those.

Paul, John and Peter. Biblical, used through the ages and internationally, no nasty abbreviations or mispronunciation risks. Often dismissed here as "dad names".

Nah, Mumsnet loves these names! John is often recommended as a solid, classic that isn’t used much anymore.

I'm another lover of "naughty" Irish lads names. My DS' name is almost universally hated or described as "meh" on here.

Love Liam, Ruairi and Cian.

I was once told my girls shortlist was "like the books of a stripclub" - Amber, Becca, Erin, Cassie were some of my favourites!

I like a lot of ‘poncy’, ‘pretentious’, ‘try-hard’ names. That doesn’t bother me too much. I echo the above comment about Marina that MN generally have a problem with names being used in other contexts. Hector will also get a fair few ‘hectoring’ responses.

The name which is least popular though has to be Lambrini. It’s a Greek name, which means ‘bright, brilliant, shining’. I posted about it and everyone ignored posts saying it was an established Greek name to continue making such witty alcohol jokes Fine not to like the name and mention it’s a type of drink, but to have no respect for the fact for it’s name in another language pissed me off. For a name forum it can be very closed minded here.

Claudia - I don't put any importance on name meanings, MN have dismissed this and names with similarly 'bad' meanings.

Claude - I love for a girl, traditionally a boys name in UK, but used commonly for girls in France, but MN won't hear of it.

Margarita - such a pretty name, but dismissed here for obvious reasons, however I love pizza and a cocktail, and the name itself.

Constantine - too pretentious/too big of a name to live up to.

Gabriel - some on MN love this name like me, but a good 40% of comments warn of because of it sounding like 'gay' and bullying.

Finally, though I can't think of any names I truly adore that have this issue, MN hate names that have been used in tragic stories/illness/complexes, Delilah and Electra being examples. I think very, very few names have such a strong link to these things that it makes a name unusable (though I appreciate knowledge is power and to some people this would be important).

I completely agree with @toastofthetown on closed mindedness here. If you dare say that you think Myles (or similar) is a bland name then you will be called out for being horrible and cruel... but they merrily mock names that are somewhat out of the ordinary or from diffident cultures.

I love 70s/80s glamour names (I have one) - like Tiffany, Kimberley, Christina, Lisa, Tanya, Naomi. I like that they reflect the aspirations and ambitions our parents had for us - we were going to live Dallas style jet setting lives.

Summaluvin my best friend at school was called Marguerita. She was a lovely person who died far too young at only 28. I still miss her and would have loved to use her name as a middle name for one of my dds but their dad wouldn't have it.

Also, I love a lot of the "too popular" names like Rose, Lily, Grace, Isabella (I have one), Eve/Eva etc.

I like Welsh names like Mari and Alys and Tomos and Harri which tend to get 'please spell them correctly' comments.

I seem to have a soft spot for names which I’m assured by mumsnetters are thoroughly downmarket. Cadence, Cassidy, Bambi, Misty. Cash for a boy.

I’m very ‘boring’ in mumsnet terms and love all of the Eve/Ada/Ida/Eva type names.

I love quirky marmite names. They are actual real names. Things like Mina and Florian .

But I love the fact they get so many different opinions! It doesn't bother me when people hate it, because it means others will love it and there also won't be 10 of them in a class. They'll make the name their own.

Marjorie. Love it.

Also all the ‘it’s a cow name!’ names - Marigold, Clover, Daisy.

Also Gertrude. I think it’s lovely. It would have suited my eldest DD very well. But on here it’s always spoken of as a sort of joke name that would obviously never be considered by any sane person.

My daughters name Daisy - often called twee. But turns out I love “twee” names like Amelie, Lily, Rosie & Maisie.

I love Sonny.
Also like Leyton/Clayton which I'm sure are thought of as down-market.
For a girl I like Lola which, I'll agree, is quite popular for a dog.

Kai is quite a popular name, there are/were a fair few because it's been around for a good decade or more. It's not "odd" at all!

Mavis. I think it's a lovely name with a lovely meaning.

@Venusclaptrap (great username, btw!) I love Marjorie too. In 2020, according to the ONS, it was only used 3 times for baby girls I was surprised by that considering the current trend for retro names.

Sharon, Karen and Tracey. They were the cool older girls at school, and I wanted to be like them. All the women I know with these names are smart and have done very well in their careers.

Meanwhile, can someone please explain "Balonz" to this clueless Australian? I see jokes about Balonz pop up a lot on MN but have no idea of the origin!
