Olivia- nickname

Due our DD next month. We have agreed on Olivia mainly because it’s the only girls name my husband likes at all! I like it but the popularity puts me off a bit. Can anyone think of a more unusual nickname than ‘Liv’ that might make me feel it has a bit more of a…shine? I was thinking maybe Oli but open to other ideas.

It’s popular because it’s such a lovely name :)

How about Vi or Viva to be a bit different?

Bear in mind though when she goes to school, it will likely be automatically shortened to Liv or Livi by her peers.

Vivi?

I know an Olesya shortened to Oli so I guess you could do it for Olivia. Nothing to stop her or her friends deciding to use Liv when she's at school of course.

I love Olive as a shortening of Olivia. Viv or Vivi is gorgeous too.

Livia, Livie, Libby. I am not keen on Oli as that is usually a diminutive of Oliver. Maybe Ola?

Of course ☺️ But I’m of the opinion that if someone is called a nickname from small it’s more likely to stick. Plus I don’t mind what her friends call her when she’s older I’m talking about what I/the family can call her as an alternative to Liv.

Like the opinion of ViVi or even just V.

All those suggestions are a bit naff or odd. What wrong with Liv? Or stick to Olivia. If you want to change the name beyond recognition you’d be better off calling her another name.

The Olivia in the book 'Wonder' is shortened to Via which is quite nice, although any I've taught have always been Liv. I wouldn't say it's overly popular now either - haven't had one in my school for ages. It's a pretty name.

@Onandoff - agree. Olivia is Olivia and a lovely name too. Why come up with a weird nn at all? It’s a short enough name on its own

Libby is quite a common one I think.

All the Olivias I know are either Livvy/Livvi or don't shorten it at all.

Just to pre-empt! My mother used to address one of her daughters as Julie-woo. Geoffrey was occasionally called Jiffers by his sister. One child had an exclusive pet-name Ozy.

Then there was my favourite uncle who addressed us indiscriminately as Fred

I used to get called livvy-liza (liza isn't my middle name) when I was little or lou but I didn't really like lou. My two dds have got random nicknames...they just come naturally I think it's best not to over think it.

So many people wondering why you would use nicknames. You obviously WANT to or you wouldn't be asking for inspiration, that's reason enough.
One of my first considerations when thinking of names I'd nickname potential, hardly anyone in our family goes by their proper name!

Most of the Olivias I've known have always been called Olivia. One was Livvy to her mum but couldn't get it to stick at school. I think Oli would be quite cool if you can get it to stick, but a lot of people will just use Olivia whatever you do.

I want a nickname as Olivia is ranked number 1 in the charts. Chances are there will be another in her nursery/school and therefore I want to give her a nickname alternative other than Liv. We have discussed it and we are going with Oli. Thanks all.

I’ve gone through life at different points using different variations, my parents still call me Livvy, at work I’m Liv and throughout uni and early career I was Olly so that people assumed I was male (I worked in a male orientated field after a degree where I was the only female!)

I’m of the age that I was named after De Havilland rather than neutron bomb though so I’m one of the older wave of Olivia’s! There are surprisingly few in our primary school these days given it’s been one of the most popular names for donkeys!

If the reason that you are giving her a nickname is to distinguish her from other children, then I wouldn't choose Oli. Oliver the most popular boys name and has been for years. A very good chunk of those will be Olly/Ollie and Ollie also features in the top hundred as a standalone name. Yours may well be the only girl Oli, but that won't help when it's being called across a playground. But I suppose you can cross that bridge when you get to it.
