What are your thoughts on the name Aloysius? I'm not sure if it's more expected in a devout Catholic family rather than a non-religious household. I think Ally would be cute nickname, and makes the name more accessible as it fits in with the more popular Alexander and Alastair.

I've never heard of this, how is it pronounced?

TuftyMarmoset · 10/11/2021 18:34

Sebastian Flyte's teddy bear = twee connotations. A lot of people won't know how to pronounce it. Ally is a female NN to me. All around a big no from me.

househuntinginthesouth · 10/11/2021 18:36

Absolutely love it!!

Pronounced Al-oh-ish-us

toastofthetown · 10/11/2021 18:36

Like Al oh ish us. Here's a website which has some pronunciations recorded, because I can't type in IPA!

Reminds me of Rees-Mogg. If that's your thing, great! 😃

EishetChayil · 10/11/2021 18:37

Very pretentious

IHateCoronavirus · 10/11/2021 18:37

I really love it but would spell his nickname Ali as it looks more masculine.

2reefsin30knots · 10/11/2021 18:38

I love it, and Brideshead is my favourite book, but it really is very pretentious.

CherryAndAlmond · 10/11/2021 18:38

Came on to say Sebastian Flyte's teddy bear. I don't like it at all.

Hope478 · 10/11/2021 18:38

I don't like names I would always be spelling out/telling others how to pronounce, so personally I would not name my child this.

ParkheadParadise · 10/11/2021 18:38

St Aloysius

Saint of Catholic Youths.
No, I don't like it as a name.

Midlandsmum23 · 10/11/2021 18:39

It's pronounced something like al-low-ish-us

I think many people would struggle with the pronunciation and pronounce it phonetically.

MonkeyPuddle · 10/11/2021 18:39

It’s in the Rees-Mogg vein of names for me. Which is a no.

Not great 😬 Does he have an Aloysius? I know there's a Sixtus. But he is very Catholic and I know the name does skew that way.

If you live in a stately home, fair enough.

Otherwise, save it fir the child's first teddy bear.

SisterGabriel · 10/11/2021 18:42

Yep, teddy bear connotations.

SisterGabriel · 10/11/2021 18:43

Also Parker from Thunderbirds first name.

Antiqueanniesmagiclanternshow · 10/11/2021 18:44

If you have ever read the Miss Read books, 'Loyshus Lloyd ' was the local poet, remembered for living in a filthy smelly house.

SummaLuvin · 10/11/2021 18:47

Sonically I love it. As someone who can't spell, not so much.

I wasn't aware of the catholic connotation, but I wasn't raised in a catholic household. I don't have a knee-jerk "they must be very devout" reaction like I get with Isaiah or Evangeline or Emmanuel.

BingBongToTheMoon · 10/11/2021 18:48

No he doesn’t have an Aloysius.

PigeonPigPie · 10/11/2021 18:49

I love it but definitely would assume you were Catholic!

RussianSpy101 · 10/11/2021 18:50

Made me think of this guy immediately. Not good. It’s an awful name, really.

I have an elderly uncle with this name. Not that you'd know, as he's chosen to go by his far more ordinary middle name for most of his life.

Don't do it.

MyMILisLovely · 10/11/2021 18:56

I like it. Very Brideshead, very Catholic

I've never heard of him. From the screenshot he only has 37 followers so unless he's more well known than that, that wouldn't be a concern for me.
