Aloysius

What are your thoughts on the name Aloysius? I'm not sure if it's more expected in a devout Catholic family rather than a non-religious household. I think Ally would be cute nickname, and makes the name more accessible as it fits in with the more popular Alexander and Alastair.

I think the child will be changing his name to Alexander (or any other boringly normal name) as soon as he's old enough.

It doesn't sound nice at all.

LoveFall · 10/11/2021 19:20

I am sorry, but not keen on the name.

I don't know why, but I call our dog his actual name followed by Aloysius and our last name when I am chastising him. He always looks at me quizzically.

Nesbo · 10/11/2021 19:20

I guess it all hinges on how much you dislike the child.

NorthSouthcatlady · 10/11/2021 19:22

I like it but lm from an Irish catholic background and don’t find it that unusual? It was my dads best friends name. He usually went by Arlo

amylou8 · 10/11/2021 19:25

Never heard it before, quite like it, but I wouldn't have had a clue how to pronounce it from looking at it written down. He will absolutely spend his like spelling it, and correcting people like me who call him Al-oi-see-us.

Mamette · 10/11/2021 19:28

To me it is a priest’s name. Or a saint’s name.

Don’t know if I’ve ever come across a real one.

It would be a no from me tbh.

Summerbubbles · 10/11/2021 19:41

I seem to remember a character in skins with this name, it was shortened to Alo.

Alistair is a much nicer alternative if you want Ally as a nickname.

JumperandJacket · 10/11/2021 19:43

I would assume staunch Catholic.

emmathedilemma · 10/11/2021 19:43

Old priest's name.

MeredithGreyishblue · 10/11/2021 19:45

The bear in Brideshead.

It's a bit too "trying to be U / sound well read" for my taste. But if you like it, use it. It won't matter once it's his name. It just becomes his name.

SnottyLottie · 10/11/2021 19:56

It’s nice enough but all I can think of is the teddy bear in Brideshead Revisited and the chauffeur from Thunderbirds.

Piapea · 10/11/2021 19:58

I know a baby Aloysius nicknamed Louie. Quite cute. It's the name of both my grandfathers weirdly. One went by Al, the other by TomGrin

clary · 10/11/2021 20:02

I taught an Aloyisius. The parents insisted it was pronounced Al-ee-see-us Confused so that's what we called him. (not sure how they got that as it's not even the phonetic spelling).

He was such a nice lad. Never heard anyone teasing him but tbh lots of the kids at the school had unusual names and the students just took it in their stride.

He would be about 20-22 now so maybe his parents were ahead of the curve. I rather like the name OP but please say it properly :)

GrandOld · 10/11/2021 20:07

I like it but prefer the nn Al.

Caspianberg · 10/11/2021 20:08

The name Alois is very common where we live. Similar style, not as long. Pronounced kind of like ‘al-llyos’.

Postdatedpandemic · 10/11/2021 20:10

@BingBongToTheMoon

No he doesn’t have an Aloysius.
You know Moggs teddy bears by name Shock
FenceSplinters · 10/11/2021 20:11

I like it! It was on our shortlist for ds.

Luredbyapomegranate · 10/11/2021 20:22

Oh why not. Brideshead is a great book.

You'd have to be happy with him adopting Al tho..

stereeotype · 10/11/2021 20:24

I sounds really silly sorry OP. Why subject your child to a name people are mainly not going to be able to pronounce?

BingBongToTheMoon · 10/11/2021 20:25

@Postdatedpandemic oh I thought it was his kids……I googled.

BruiserWoods · 10/11/2021 20:26

Not uncommon in Ireland. They're usually in their 80s. I'm not a fan though.

MsFogi · 10/11/2021 20:27

It was on my list of names (although DH vetoed it). To me it is an Irish old person's name (like Ruby was an English old persons name until its recent revival) - I had a couple of Great (or great great) uncles with the name. They both had the nn Alo.

Thatsplentyjack · 10/11/2021 20:30

I always here that name as allo-wishes. Definitely not a name I would go for.

Queenie6655 · 10/11/2021 20:37

Awful

CathyorClaire · 10/11/2021 20:40

Not unless you're planning on giving birth to a teddy.
