Hallie or Indie for a baby girl name

Me and my hubby are trying to decide between these two girl names.
Which do you prefer? :-)
Hallie pronounced "Hah-lee" (hoping people won't read it as Hayley?)
Or Indie? I'm just not sure on the spelling of this one with seeing the word "die" in it haha. Any thoughts?

They both sound like they are short for something else.

Meandmini3 · 08/11/2021 12:48

I think Halle if the spelling I would expect.

I don’t love either name but slightly prefer Halle/Hallie out of the two.

viques · 08/11/2021 12:53

Indie is awful, India is a bit better, and most people will probably think that you have called her India anyway.

I would pronounce Hallie as Allie with an H . I don’t know why you have added a middle H.

FolornLawn · 08/11/2021 13:02

Hallie is nicer IMO, but I prefer Callie.

DotDotDotDotDot · 08/11/2021 13:17

I’d spell it Halle as in Halle Berry if you go for that.
Indie could be short for Indiana or Indigo, I’m not sure about it as a full name to be honest.

EdgeOfTheSky · 08/11/2021 13:17

Halle.

Indie - no.

AuntDympna · 08/11/2021 14:17

I love Hallie. Or Callie/Cally.
Indie is a very common nickname in some communities where Inderjit, Inderpal, Narinder and so on are common names. To be honest I like it as a standalone name, but not as much as Hallie.

Fl0w3ry · 08/11/2021 14:28

Hallie is pretty, but quite popular where I live.
Indie is nice, but sounds like it’s short for another name like India or Indigo.

SummaLuvin · 08/11/2021 14:28

I much prefer Indie, not fond of Hallie at all.

I don't think "die" being the end of Indie is really a problem, do you feel the same about "lie" at the end of Hallie? However, if it does bother you, and will bother you every time you see the name then it doesn't matter what I think! I guess an option would be to name her India, then nn Indi, as it will be a causal family nickname rather than her official name I think you can get away with a more informal spelling.

mamatoTails · 08/11/2021 14:34

I've got an Indigo, Nn Indi.

I like both Indie and Hallie.

JudgementalCactus · 08/11/2021 14:39

I would pronounce Hallie as Allie with an H

Me too. No way it would occur to me to pronounce it the way OP expects.

Indie is quite quirky and pretentious in not a good way.

SoupDragon · 08/11/2021 14:46

Hallie pronounced "Hah-lee" (hoping people won't read it as Hayley?)

Like others, I'd pronounce it like Alley with an H at the front.

EdgeOfTheSky · 08/11/2021 14:55

OP, are you wanting it pronounced ‘Harley’ (in an accent where the r is not pronounced) or to rhyme with alley?

Kitkat151 · 08/11/2021 15:01

Halle ( definately not Hallie)
Not Indie...it’s a bit naff IMO

RuthW · 08/11/2021 15:28

Love Indie if it's short for India or Indiana

KirstenBlest · 08/11/2021 16:36

I don't like either of them. Indie sounds like a newspaper or a description of a band. Hallie makes me think of halitosis.

Cally or Lindy are nicer

DukkaDukka · 08/11/2021 17:03

Hallie is as others have said like Ally with an H, is that what you mean?

I like both, you need to have twins. I love India though.

Stevearnottsbeard · 08/11/2021 18:08

Indie is one of my irrational hates unfortunately as is India, indigo etc, sorry to everyone out there!!! Hallie I would pronounce like most other people, alley with a h if your wanting it said how I think you do, I would spell harley. In short my choice would be hallie but I would make the pronunciation clearer by changing the spelling

thewhatsit · 08/11/2021 19:06

I’m not quite clear on what Hah- means.

I like Hallie but I’d be pronouncing it like Alley (as in alley way) with a H. This might also be the pronunciation you are after but I’m not sure.

xDollydaydreamx · 08/11/2021 19:10

Thanks for your replies everyone.
Think we're going to go with "Hallie"

BeKindBeYou · 08/11/2021 19:21

I really like Indie - a beautiful name!

Edenember · 08/11/2021 21:48

Love Indie ♥️

Inspirationpending · 08/11/2021 21:51

Both names quite common now

Cally is lovely

Starsandglitter · 08/11/2021 22:16

I had both on my list a few years ago! I’m a bit surprised how popular they’ve both got but I think they are both lovely 😊

Luredbyapomegranate · 08/11/2021 22:28

They are both fairly faddy insubstantial names, IMO. But Hallie of the two. Indie makes me think of 9Os music, and India is not really on unless you have Indian heritage.
