Is this pretty for a girl or is it old lady?

I think many people will think ‘moaning’ unfortunately

invisiblecats · 06/11/2021 10:06

Yup, moaning Myrtle.

RedRobin100 · 06/11/2021 10:08

Old moaning lady

hotmeatymilk · 06/11/2021 10:09

It’s lovely but ruined by the Harry Potter associations – though I didn’t think of that til I saw it in the thread.

CovIneedanamechange · 06/11/2021 10:14

..the turtle was what jumped to mind. Maybe I should get more sleep!

longestlurkerever · 06/11/2021 10:15

I didn't immediately think Harry Potter but I imagine that JK Rowling chose the name because it does have a very old lady feel and a lot of the wizard community have names like that. I don't think it sounds very nice tbh and it rhymes with turtle which makes it worse. Sorry!

Floralnomad · 06/11/2021 10:15

Awful , it just sounds very unattractive .

AuntDympna · 06/11/2021 10:53

I saw it and thought it was pretty - forgot all about Harry Potter.

She'll be moaning myrtle or myrtle the turtle for sure it's a very unforgiving name.

Usuallyhappycamper · 06/11/2021 11:15

I like it. It's softer than Mabel, which is quite popular now. Harry Potter is still very popular though, so that will probably be the only place kids have heard the name.

NuffSaidSam · 06/11/2021 11:18

I think it's a 'comedy' name.

But then I think Agatha and Ethel were probably in that category and people do use those now.

I think you'd have to be quite cool/popular/confident to pull it off.

Louise5754 · 06/11/2021 11:23

Martha or Elsie would be better

ShoesEverywhere · 06/11/2021 11:32

Beryl has a similar sound to me - agree though that Myrtle is always going to be Moaning Myrtle to me!

SummaLuvin · 06/11/2021 12:27

What a ghastly name. Please don’t name your sweet child this OP 😢

SnowyPetals · 06/11/2021 12:33

Myrtle is about 95, with a blue rinse and hangs out with her old lady friends Gladys and Peggy.

toastofthetown · 06/11/2021 12:59

Myrtle is one of few names that I can find no redeeming features with.

hotmeatymilk · 06/11/2021 13:25

She sounds boss, though.

I’m cribbing Agatha, Gladys and Myrtle from this thread if I get knocked up again.

StrychnineInTheSandwiches · 06/11/2021 13:34

Myrtle would go well with Horace in the other thread.

They could form a support group.

MajorCarolDanvers · 06/11/2021 13:35

Old lay or Moaning Myrtle I'm afraid.

ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba · 06/11/2021 13:36

Myrtle the Turtle

@StrychnineInTheSandwiches
🤣

Comedycook · 06/11/2021 13:36

Awful...it's not a cutesy old lady name...it's really ugly sounding and comical as a pp said

NuffSaidSam · 06/11/2021 13:36

I can't wait for all these kids to grow up and get married, so we can get Christmas cards from Horace and Myrtle or Albert and Edith or Derek and Agatha.
TurnUpTurnip · 06/11/2021 13:38

I have an aunty called myrtle I always thought it was a horrible name even as a child

Ihopeyourcakeisshit · 06/11/2021 13:38

Yourdeadtome · 06/11/2021 13:40
