this is a name that I have recently fallen in love with after a hearing a mum shout her little girl Honey in the park...

I'm honestly obsessed with it and love it!! What do you all think x

OP posts:

@NarcissistsEyebrows

Nope

It's sweet in an infantalising way.

Give her a proper name and a proper chance to become a proper adult.

Call her honey at home when you want to, then Catherine or whatever the rest of the time.

There is definitely something a bit pervy about a young child named honey. Sorry OP, but you did ask...

I have a similar name too honey and I'm 25 with a great career and have lived a completely normal life with most people not caring at all about my name. Stop pretending that someone's name makes that big of an impact on their lives

Honey in French = Miel. Pronounced Mee el
Honey in Italian = Miele. Pronounced Mee ay lay

Miele, German brand name = Mee luh

lollipopsandrainbows · 03/11/2021 17:35

I know a Honey. Really suited her when she was little but she's now 14 and hates it. I also know a Teddy in a very similar position. But you can call your child what you like, unusual names are always highly contentious on MN.

NoHunGosh · 03/11/2021 17:35

My (Italian) rescue dog was called Miele (me-yell-eh - Italian pronunciation ) and changed it to Honey as it was a right bugger to shout. English version is a great name for a dog.

clpsmum · 03/11/2021 17:38

I love it. So much better than the run of the mill boring names a lot of people on here seem to favour

TatianaBis · 03/11/2021 17:39

Anyway, I wouldn't choose but I was at school with a girl called Honey and she was very cool.

DemBonesDemBones · 03/11/2021 17:41

I love it. Mel/Melissa mean honey and I much prefer it to those.

DemBonesDemBones · 03/11/2021 17:42

No one on mumsnet will like it because it's not in the top 10 approved names.

CouncilHousedAndViolentBaby · 03/11/2021 17:45

Ugly sound to it

Lemonsyellow · 03/11/2021 17:58

I wouldn’t use it personally, but I quite like it. There are far worse names.

Feelingofftoday · 03/11/2021 18:21

...

TreasuredMim · 03/11/2021 18:32

It's not a name for an adult or even a school child. More suited to a porn star or soap character. Don't do it.

MajorCarolDanvers · 03/11/2021 18:34

I call mine Honey everyday. I also call my 4 nieces Honey whenever I see them.

None of them have that on their BCs though and I also call them by their proper names.

kittykutty · 03/11/2021 18:36

Sorry but what is the point of giving a name that means something else, If only you - the parent- know that it means that?

"Call her Sarah it means honey"- err, nobody else is going to catch on unless she goes around telling everyone "guess what, my name means honey"

If you like honey use it, else choose the next on the list. None of this "her name means X in ancient aztec"

PinkSyCo · 03/11/2021 18:40

Personally I’d find it embarrassing either to be called it or to have to refer to either a child or a grown adult by the name. May as well name her darling or luvvie.

Mamamamasaurus · 03/11/2021 18:58

@PlanDeRaccordement

Call her Miele (pronounced May-lee). It means honey.
Like the vacuum, yes?
DramaAlpaca · 03/11/2021 19:03

A big no from me.

Marygoround22 · 03/11/2021 19:07

Must clarify I was a stripper for about 17 years and never met ONE 'Honey' Grin .

All of the other reasons though op, nope. Imagine her as any given non-sexualised career. Have it as a nickname or middle name even but not as her actual name.

Iamanicepersonreally · 03/11/2021 19:08

It's a great name for an animal. Definitely not for a human

AliceMcK · 03/11/2021 19:10

It’s a very cute and beautiful name for a baby or little girl, but I agree about thinking about your DDs future and how the name will sit when she’s older.

I never call my DDs by their names when I’m calling them at the park, it’s sweetie, monkey, number 1, 2 or 3… I don’t like calling out my children’s names in public if I can help it.

Thepennysjustdropped · 03/11/2021 19:12

Yep, as above. Great name for a hamster/Labrador. Give her a real name and call her Honey as a nickname. My dch have normal names but get called similar to Honey all the time.

Thepennysjustdropped · 03/11/2021 19:14

Also, Honeychile Rider from James Bond conjures up a really dodgy image!

ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba · 03/11/2021 19:14

just looked it up and I was right about Greek but wrong about translation

as PP said Melissa means bee.
but the name comes from the word "Meli" which means honey.
Apologies for misinformation.
I knew a Melissa who was nicknamed Meli and she told me her name meant honey - so I thought she meant her full name! my bad

and whoever said to not give a name that means something else - you must be joking.
People choose or disregard names become of what they mean all the time so your argument is invalid.
I like the name Caleb but it means dog and as much as I love dogs I didn't want to call my boys that.
Same with Rufus, it means red and somehow that didn't sit right, despite red being my favourite colour!

ManifestingWisdom · 03/11/2021 19:16

So awful
Dont.

PyjamaMamma · 03/11/2021 19:17

Our local strip club is called Honeypot though Grin
